We've been throwing 1st round picks around like scatter cushions for over a decade. It's criminal just how many 1st round picks we DON'T have on our books. This Schultz trade will go down as yet another howler.
Yet we’ve been one of the most consistently successful teams over the last 15 years.

If you want first round picks, you’re welcome to go support Essendon.

Even on that it’s still way overs, at best he’s a good role playing pressure forward, you can quite often manufacture players into this role.
The role itself even if done perfectly still doesn’t justify the outlay. Would you pay the same for Darcy Byrne Jones? Who is arguably just as good in that role, and was manufactured into that position from Half back.
For every success in that role there’s 10 failures. Otherwise the AFL would be full of high quality smalls.
Why is Richards so sought after if you can just “manufacture “ smalls?

Run his man up onto wing as a marking outlet and then burst back to goal.
Go watch the best of Chris Tarrants leading patterns and work rate then emulate it.
Listening to McStay on Unlaced, he talks about how Collingwood doesn't want their forwards playing the hit up role on the wing, which was Brisbane's style. Collingwood are more about moving it through the middle and the forwards playing high intensity pressure and efficiency in the 50, though that means lower possessions.

From what I can gather Collingwood's ethos seems to be about following the process and the goals will eventuate from it, which is why so many of them were talking up Shultz's "reward for effort" after the Brisbane game. It looks like this system lends itself to widespread individual goal scorers but no one really gets off the chain and every week there's almost a rotation of who has a quiet game on paper.

It definitely looks like that is why Ginnivan is thriving in a different game style at Hawthorn. Maybe that's the knock on Reef?

25 year old Beams > 25 year old Petracca

28 year old Beams < 28 year old Petracca

It took Petracca a bit longer than Beams to get going. While Beams started to struggle a bit towards the end with niggles.
Petracca won the Norm Smith and was awesome all year in 2021 - when 25.

Thanks mate hadn't seen that. Good insight into it.

Is there a reason this thread is still banging on about trades done years ago?

Isn't it for 2024 & going forward.

Booooooooring.
I would have thought that was the case, that it was for looking forward, rather than navel gazing about the past; but what the smeg would a blow in like me know?

But isn't that the point. If Collingwood could have manufactured a player to play the role Schultz does they would of. It's pretty clear that the nerves of playing for Collingwood got the better of him with his execution, which nobody could have foreseen. But his fundamentals and forward craft are lauded by his teammates and coaches. If he can quell the anxiety that's affected his ability to finish off his hard work, he'll be right up there with the best small forwards. I think that you underestimate how hard it is to manufacture a player that can both fit into our system and thrive in an exclusive small forward role
