Yes, Wright and Hogan are huge recruitment successes for Essendon and GWS respectively, that each would have filled a gaping hole in our squad and yet we didn't have the courage to take a chance on them.

IMO, we've been far to risk-averse in considering second-chance key position redemption cases with huge upside potential and have compounded those missed opportunities by overpaying for mid-range recruits with far less upside potential, such as McStay and Schultz (who are both useful players but we paid top dollar).
Which redemption cases ( that we could fit under our Cap) have we missed?

Given Allen’s injury history any contract offer id make would be trigger included.

Feels like he’s barely played the last 2-3 years
I definitely get your concerns, but I think WC is the biggest football blackhole we’ve seen in a long time. Players struggling with fitness and to ultimately develop is the norm because of their systemic issues.

The perfect example for me is Chesser he was very highly rated when he went over there, hurt his annkle early in 2022 which they just couldn’t get right wiping out all of that year and he’s then done nothing since returning. Repeated fitness concerns lead to a lack of development and ultimately queries come. Like a lot of kids it could simply be that he’s not up to it and he gets there if he’s good enough, but it’s a minor example of the barriers in front of anyone on that list at the moment.

Like Daniher I’d be pretty confident a guy like Allen in a good system would thrive and it isn’t a serious discussion if there’s triggers in the contract.

Would we back ourselves in and make an offer to Tarryn Thomas? No doubting he's an excellent talent and would be an asset on field. Geelong seemed to have turned Stengle around -could we do the same with Thomas?

Stengle had issues with his professionalism, no doubt, but more concerningly, Thomas appears to be simply a POS.

How are you comparing Stengle to Thomas? Completely different situations.
Obviously the type of action that each of them did was different, but in both cases it was repeated actions that eventually saw them both being sacked by their clubs. That's the comparison.
With the amount of background talk starting to emerge, it's highly likely that Thomas will be playing AFL somewhere in 2025.

And thats where the comparions end. Stengle's transgressions were only drug law/ related, Thomas though is when it comes to abusing/treatment of women. And you have to walk a fine line especially given all the women you have in your club, staff and aflw team.

You'd have to make sure he has turned his life and actions around before even attempting to bring him into your club.

Possible Talls that would not cost a 1st

There are a bunch of talls I would have at Collingwood but most of them would cost an arm and a leg.

Max Gruzewski (GWS) Age: 19 Height: 192 = plays at either end and was compared to Jeremy Howe in draft year

Wade Derksen (GWS) Age: 22 Height: 197 (on the GWS site it says 194 but everywhere else is 197) Mid-Season Draftee = Plays in all thirds have heard good things currently playing as a back but has had 30 disposals in the ruck, has a rugby background

Josh Worrell (ADE) Age: 23 Height: 195 = If Petty goes to Adelaide maybe we can pry him out for a 2nd/3rd

James Van Es (STK) Age: 19 Height: 196 = Has battled through a lot of injuries but he takes the best key forward type of defender

Isaac Keeler (STK) Age: 19 Height: 198 = I believe we interviewed him a bunch, injured most of his first season has been playing as a key defender

Josh Battle (STK) Age: 25 Height: 193 = Free Agent would slot right in

Not key position but Elijah Hollands was only offered a one year contract (there is a possibility he out performs all of Fin, Allen, Carmichael, Sullivan, Bytel) If he isn’t getting regular senior footy maybe he would be interested in a game if we do need to get younger.

There are a couple of others that are not KPP I might do another list when I get time.

I read the other day that Geelong are already putting in the groundwork on Thomas. They could end up with both.
They could. But Stengle was arrested with drugs along with Crouch who is now playing at Saints. There are plenty of players who have been found with drugs who go on to play good footy & currently playing. I don't get the comparison between Thomas & Stengle, that's all. Even Scott said similar today when asked about it.

Please Pies, don't touch him.
If he goes on to win [whatever] with [whomever], so be it. That's on them. Facilitating opportunity for someone who has transgressed on multiple times on such an important issue, disgusts me.
In an era when there are horrifying numbers of incidents of violence against women, a clear message needs to be sent.
Sometimes you don't, or shouldn't, get the opportunity for complete redemption - his actions caused this situation: changing your ways doesn't mean you get another shot at your dream.
I hope he is remorseful, I hope he has changed his ways. I hope he now applies himself to chasing another career.

Could not agree more, if Hawthornes 2nd got it done I would do it.

Dogs are so freaking greedy. There should be a limit on how many talls one team can have..😆

He’d have to be considering his options. Might choose to go back to WA.

Yeah, they are chalk and cheese

Now that we have an inkling of what they're trying to do you can see the sense in it.
Take out the 9 players over 30 (we won't be able to get enough talent in before they retire and getting some of that talent may also be dependent on retirements) and your oldest core players become McStay Moore De Goey at 28yrs and Maynard Frampton at 27yrs.

If you line that up with our retirements and our Free Agency War Chest those players will be around the 30yr mark when we make our move which is just about perfect for your leadership group. Adding the likes of Allen, Petty and LDU fills in the gaps talent and age wise, and I'd grab Nick's mate Smith next year as well if available.

#SR36 and #apex would be drooling at the prospect of getting Keller

Geelong and their ability to rehabilitate players' reputations or careers seems to be similar to their ability to recruit players - it's enhanced by their location and the relative lack of media attention/exposure.

Thomas at Collingwood would become one of the biggest media circuses in recent times. Given his past indiscretions, it would in my view be a very significant gamble and distraction that makes any decision to recruit him that much more difficult.

He’s had plenty of chances, no club should touch him with a 10 foot pole.
