But there's another list of FAs isn't there... and guess what they are all in that same age demographic.
Yep and you try to add one or two a year. Hope some kids already in the team kick on as well as some of the other youngsters.

The path your suggesting leaves us dropping down until new draftees develop - by that time, we're not just replacing the current oldies, were also needing to replace Moore, JDG, and Maynard. We'll try to remain in contention whilst they're still around - anything longer than that is too unpredictable.

the better quality draftees are increasingly playing year 1 & 2

It is exactly what the AFL would do - just like Dimma going to the Suns.

GW is conveniently on a sabbatical.

I don’t think many other sports would have so much interference from the governing body.

The path I'm suggesting is to let nature take its course dip a couple seasons then hit up the FA once you have accumulated a core youth to come through with Daicos.

Your trading in for ok to good types doesn't guarantee ultimate success either like you pretend it does, but could land you in years of mid ranged finished and ND wasted career by the time the club decides to drop and do it right like Ninthmond did (mediocrity for a decade then pick 1 4 3 7 13etc......and then they finally traded the missing pieces in.

North Melbourne spent the better part of 20 years saying they couldn't afford to drop down and do a full rebuild and sat in finals contention and mediocrity for most of it.

People are bewitched by Geelongs and Collingwoods dads army mini rebuilds using the core of former premiership and GF teams, and equating that with trading in odds and ends of up to half the 22 as a rebuild method that they think will see multiple flags...

Geelong are the Melbourne version or the Sydney Swans. Think their shit doesn’t stink.

I am actually the AFL for all the their grand standing in respect of woman doesn’t actually say “sorry you have blown all your chances”. You are no longer welcome. Actually show woman we are serious as a code. Rather than just have gimmick rounds.

I'm not pretending it does guarantee success. Nothing does. I just think it's more likely to result in it.

Nick is a freak. If we're hitting the draft to find his next premiership partners and we get lucky enough to find them, they'll most likely be mid 20s by the time they're ready. It's only the greats who play key roles in flags when young. So by that time JDG and Moore are gone and you've got to replace them too.

We've got a 5 year window with Nick, JDG and Moore. There's enough around them already that it's a realistic chance to be able to top up to replace the veterans and be in contention the whole time. I'd definitely be giving it a crack. Let's have a crack at getting these blokes on the dais again. Seems much more likely than hoping we hit gold in the draft - in less than the normal time that it's taken for teams who have hit gold through the draft.

I'd keep our draft picks though - for the period after this coming 5 years - unless doing a Geelong and trading them for young guys like Ollie and Bruhn. Free agents. Plus id be willing to trade out someone like IQ (example only) if we could replace him with a free agent and use the trade value to recruit or get higher in the draft.

At the risk of being controversial, the longer this season goes, the more grateful I am that we snatched a flag in 2023.

The more I look at our list, the bigger the holes I see. We are still far too reliant on aging warriors and they’re not being pushed aside by talented hungry youngsters. And we lack top-tier structural tall players, which are so hard to find.

I’d go so far as to say that we have the weakest set of under-22 players in the league. Mismanagement of our salary cap and draft picks (and a bit of bad luck) over several years had left the cupboard relatively empty. There’s nothing much in the VFL for any of us to get truly excited about and we don’t even have a first rounder this year. We’ve just not capable of going back-to-back.

I know that all sounds like a negative whinge but it’s not. I’m eternally grateful that we seized our moment. Much better than the likes of Brisbane, Port and GWS who have been knocking on the door for years without ever getting it done.

I expect us to miss the Eight this year and to slide into the bottom four in 2025, before starting to rebuild in 2026. But the memories of 2022 and 2023 while keep me smiling as our renewal period runs its course.

Gotta agree… we have too many 30+ yr old players and not enough fresh blood.

Possible Talls that would not cost a 1st

There are a bunch of talls I would have at Collingwood but most of them would cost an arm and a leg.

Max Gruzewski (GWS) Age: 19 Height: 192 = plays at either end and was compared to Jeremy Howe in draft year

Wade Derksen (GWS) Age: 22 Height: 197 (on the GWS site it says 194 but everywhere else is 197) Mid-Season Draftee = Plays in all thirds have heard good things currently playing as a back but has had 30 disposals in the ruck, has a rugby background

Josh Worrell (ADE) Age: 23 Height: 195 = If Petty goes to Adelaide maybe we can pry him out for a 2nd/3rd

James Van Es (STK) Age: 19 Height: 196 = Has battled through a lot of injuries but he takes the best key forward type of defender

Isaac Keeler (STK) Age: 19 Height: 198 = I believe we interviewed him a bunch, injured most of his first season has been playing as a key defender

Josh Battle (STK) Age: 25 Height: 193 = Free Agent would slot right in

Not key position but Elijah Hollands was only offered a one year contract (there is a possibility he out performs all of Fin, Allen, Carmichael, Sullivan, Bytel) If he isn’t getting regular senior footy maybe he would be interested in a game if we do need to get younger.

There are a couple of others that are not KPP I might do another list when I get time.
Keeler has all the tricks but application was his issue apparently. Fix his application and he’d be the pick of the bunch on pure talent and x-factor.
Van Ess had great combine results for his size and definitely worth considering.
Derksen in MSD - is he better than Sof?
My recollection was many had high hopes for him, so not sure why he hasn’t kicked on.

It would be cheaper to just fix AJ’s application.

I’m a fan, but starting to have my doubts, and the social media barrage would have been a huge blow to his confidence.
I live in hope.
Me too!

So true - the unintended consequences of the list aging while we seek out and develop these 1st rounders is never considered.
All of a sudden another rebuild is needed, and the Club is even further away from a flag.
