We've got a poor draft hand this year, we need to understand the impact of the 2025 bidding/matching scheme to ensure that we have cover for Tom McGuane next year. Looks like we're in no position to bring in Tier 1 contracted players this year - the large number of uncontracted players gives us some flexibility to shake out some targeted Tier 2 players who drop down the pecking order at their current club as a result of player trading.

The issue here is he has offers north of $800k in front of him per season.

The other concern is …Fly doesn’t give away midfield mins to players he doesn’t trust or as he says numerous times “set them up to fail”.

Next season we will still have a midfield that will contain Naicos, JDG, Mitchell, Crisp, Penldes, Jaicos and possibly even Sidebottom still.

The only player in the current market up for grabs that would command instant midfield minutes as it stands based on the above is Bailey Smith.
Think you've confused Peatling with Perryman

I think you’ll find the joke is on you.

In addition to live in reality one usually requires a sense of humility; an attribute you seem to be in want of.

Hobbs
Peatling
Parker

All 3 are worth having a dip at.
Hobbs a victim of the Dons mid logjam, very gettable, with Caldwell and Durham breaking out and Zerrett and Parish already there he’s gonna struggle to get a game, same with Tsatas

Peatling is a good one, clearly has immense talent as we’ve seen with Cogs and Kelly out.

Parker…. Ehhhh he’s still shown he’s a good player, but we need to get younger not older

Peatling would suit us
That sort of fringe, next-in-line, inside mid with upside is what we should be looking for, whether its him or someone else
Peatling picked up 10 coaches votes on the weekend in the Giant’s win over the Lions. Obviously has talent and is the sort of young fringe player in a strong club the Pies should be targeting imo

We clearly aren't going to trade Nick for Petracca which is what Melbourne would ask for so realistically who if anyone can we lose and still potentially come out in front? More importantly what would even get Melbourne to the table?

It would take names like Quaynor and Hill combined as a starting point I would imagine and given the age profile of our list that's a big a price to pay and creates a problem. They aren't valuing a banged up Mihocek or McStay coming off an ACL so forget that one.

A future 1st and two former 1st round picks in Quaynor and Allan would be considered to much by many and yet Melbourne would probably say it's still not enough for a contracted Petracca.

I don't see a pathway.

Would love Reef to stay as we have put time into him - although starting to get skeptical over 2020 draft.

If he were to go, what are your thoughts on reef for hobbs?

Have noticed reef does like Essendon posts on Instagram, pretty sure he was a bombers fan too. So could be win win?

Hobbs
Peatling
Parker

All 3 are worth having a dip at.
I’d prefer to target Berry and Peatling over Hobbs, as both have exposed AFL form this season.

Adding Parker, Peatling and Berry would provide immediate depth within our midfield. The trick would be getting them all in with our limited draft hand, which may involve shedding a player or two in an area of the field we have cover in.

I don't think we are any chance of snagging Petracca, which is a shame because he is a champ. But I wouldn't be discounting the challenge he has ahead of him to get back to full fitness. He has not been able to exert himself for months. Has lost a decent amount of muscle mass and undoubtedly a lot of conditioning.

He will surely get both back and he looks the type who can stack on muscle by looking at a dumbbell - but it is not an insignificant challenge ahead of him.

I wouldn’t be surprised if Melb settle for what they perceive as unders, given Clubs may well be concerned about the adverse impact of the injury on Petraccas future performances.

The Age reporting Sidebottom to play on in 2025

So will nobody be retiring this season???

If not, the oldest team in the league is going to be even older, slower and more injury-prone in 2025 than we were this year.

I don’t think this is a good idea.

And Clayton Oliver. He’s gettable at a fire sale price. He would walk straight into our first choice stoppages group.

IMO, we need an in-and-under midfielder to extract the ball and distribute it to the Daicos bros and DeGoey on the outside. We really don't want Nick in particular getting crunched trying to win the ball at the coalface. He needs more protection and is most damaging as first receiver, not extractor.

What are your thoughts on Clayton Oliver if we can get him from Melbourne for say our 2nd-rounder plus our 2025 2nd-rounder, with the Dees paying a significant chunk of his salary? Cleary Oliver has his issues and is a poor kick but he is a contested ball-winning beast, tackling machine and good distributor by hand. A fresh start under Fly might be just what he needs to turn things around. And the Dees are unlikely to play hard-ball over him at the trade table. Oliver turning his career around is not that far-fetched - look at what Jesse Hogan has done.

Given our weak draft hand, I think we really need to get creative and look for a turn-around prospect with big upside potential.
Only if we can't have Petracca 😍

Next year seems to be where a bit turnover will happen so very light this year.
