Collingwood - us v them campaign

It's because they have the biggest scumbag element amongst their supporter base.

Victoria Park was the biggest scum filled pond you'd ever come across, which a lot of younger fans might not have experienced.

Sure other teams had dodgy fans, but none that feral.

you think you can get away with abuse.

that is just a moderate example of what I mean.

And people think they are funny..

Ho, ho, ho

it is so funny to abuse people.

point made.

No wonder it is Us v Them.

i think Blessed needs to grow up a bit. We get all these comments but I, and many other Pies fans, love it. When we win we haven't beaten just one team, we've beaten the whole league (them). Sure it's pretty bad when we lose, but I'm a grown man (IMO :p) I can handle that.

Anyway, who cares, it's just an advertising slogan. How many games are we going to win because of it

We want more of this. You can call us feral, scum, whatever but were not losing any games because of it.

We thrive on your abuse.

And don't mind Blessed. He's just bored on a saturday afternoon.

Just like Collingwood fans thought they could get away with spitting on, physically intimidating, threatening people at Victoria Park.

The only time I've seen people spat on en masse at football matches was there.

There's no smoke without fire. Seems the Pies fans there wanted to put the fire out with spit.

One of the most delusion filled threads I've read through. Us vs them, geez it goes both ways, so what if a bit of banter is thrown around, makes it more fun anyway. Got plenty of Collingwood fans as mates, and theyre pretty top people, but they'll cop a mouthful and give it back with interest. Some comparisons here are just ridiculous.

If Collingwood want it Us vs Them, then let them have it. It is a pretty dubious marketing ploy, and bottom of the barrel stuff. Of course if they really want it Us vs Them, they will loose.

It would be far better to make it "Them Chasing Us" - like Geelong do. Just don't look behind and keep moving on with your head held high.

Footy banter is clearly not the same as the holocaust - there is a very, very, real and deep pain in WW2 for the Jewish people. And it is compounded by a history of suffering and oppression. Of course, they haven't always been perfect themselves, and God has reprimanded his people when he needed to.

However if a Pies supporter got bashed at a train station for being a pies supporter.... - it equates to abuse and the same mentality behind all violence etc. I suppose this does happen, but they are isolated occurrences and not the lot of a down trodden and outcast folk known as 'Pies Fans', or any team's supporters for that matter.

High Flying Flag should stop using Jesus name as a swear word before he starts whinging about others abusing 'his people' and faith.

I've never come across a more precious or moronic 'poster' and I put that term loosely, than yourself Blessed.

I can't believe you've had this meltdown over getting abused as a Collingwood supporter. **** me, how childish. Every supporter gets abused by opposition supporters. It's part of the game. If you don't like the abuse go support Netball or Lawn Bowls. Seriously, ****ing hell.

Did you read the topic before you post?

The topic is why do we have the slogan Us v Them?

Your typical over the top response is an example of why we would need the slogan.

What you see are people judging a person by the fact that he or she is a Collingwood supporter. Now it's not as extreme as needing to preach about it, but it does make you wonder how in a time, where any kind of segregation is now looked down upon, that people are still allowed to have an unjustified hatred/dislike towards someone because they support Collingwood

Please try and read the thread before you post in it.

The hyperbole and the bad mouthing of us isn’t true. We are a cross section of the community just like any other set of people. We have passion and pride. But we are informed and we care.

Cheers.

Went to far with the jews-nazi comparison.

I don't really agree with Blessed. Although I will say that some of the things people say are a bit unfair.

I've got all my teeth, I live in a nice house in a nice suburb. I've got a private school, University education. Heck, I don't even drink. But if I'm in a conversation about footy and I say I'm a collingwood supporter, people just necessarily assume that I'm completely bias, pro collingwood about everything, you know the type. People can't take me seriously because they just believe all these stereotypes. A Hawthorn (just picking a random team) supporting bogan with completely no idea would be taken far more seriously then myself.

I think that's unfair but the Nazi comparison is way out of line.

But in 2012, as it always has been, it's Us against Them.

It's like that for many supporters. Us against them is just another form of 'we are Carlton, **** the rest'. When you constantly cop it, you become insular.

Hey, I'm not Greek, I don't vote Liberal, I don't have low morals, I'm not into fast cars and doof doof music, but apparently because I support Carlton this describes me when it comes to the outer or football websites.

When you are a big club, you get more supporters. When you get more supporters you get more idiots proportionately spread amongst your supporter base. These idiots soon define your whole supporter base and the amount of idiot detractors also grows proportionately to counter your idiots.

You know most posters don't sift through the idiot statements to find perspective from sensible posters, as their aim is usually to get payback for something your idiots said, or to amuse themselves by deliberately misrepresenting you. This becomes the norm, and even reasonable posters become completely insular and say '**** it' because they are banging their heads against a brick wall trying to fight it.

The modern day supporter is equally as interested in the failure of others, as they are the success of themselves, because they are a) idiots or b) decent posters who have had enough and do not want to see an opposition idiot in celebration mode.

Just getting back to the campaign - I think its very evocative and effective.

Got to remember that its pitch is to try and increase membership - therefore the target audience is Collingwood fans not the rest of the League. The memory of being alone and unloved in GF week would have to strike a chord with pie fans.

Good luck to them.

I don't understand what this meltdown is about. I get abused every time Essendon lose. I was abused by every single Carlton, Hawthorn, Collingwood, Richmond, Geelong etc. supporters when we lost by 62 points in the Elimination final against Carlton. Did I care? No because we lost. Why would you get so offended if someone calls your team feral? Are you feral? Who cares about this. Religion, race etc. is different as that is your identity that someone is bagging. Who cares whether you are a Collingwood, Carlton, Gold Coast, GWS etc. I am a manchester united supporter and trust me, more people hate united than Collingwood. Do I care? No because I chose the team. Its not like its my faith or race. They diss my team, I diss theirs back.

I think you care too much about footy to the point where your life is about Collingwood, hence the Nazi comparison. Not a single Collingwood supporter was killled or bashed for being a Collingwood supporter. Blessed, I think you may need to take your mind of footy and explore the world. There is nothing wrong with a bit of banter and besides, Collingwood do have a feral supporter base like Carlton have an arrogant one and North have a whiny one. Better? Its not only Collingwood with the faults. Carlton might even have a bigger issue then Collingwood, but both clubs are as bad as each other.

No you weren't, but you probably copped some crap from a few of our respective idiots, or from reasonable supporters who, now sick of the idiots, decided to fight fire with fire. This caused you to generalise about entire supporter bases. See how it works?

Under no circumstance is it alright to abuse people.

Other supporters get away with murder and then justify their own low, vile act by saying it is only Collingwood supporters.

Hitler did the same with the Jews.

You've lost all perspective over some teasing. Grow up.

Thats the point. It is not just teasing. It is generalising about a group of people and then specifying them with certain characteristics because that suits your argument.

In today's modern age, that thing shouldn't happen. Not in relation to race, creed, religion.

And if you think sporting banter is just teasing; Try living in Glasgow with Ranger and Celtic fans. Or in Manchester when Liverpool play. Our game hasn't spilt over to that level thank god, but we don't want it to. Supporters should not generalise about other supporters. Period.

We need to have good grace towards all other supporters.

It comes back to the old adage:-

Do unto others as you would have them do unto you.

I was in terms of my friends. All my friends, regardless of who they support, gave me crap, just as I would give them crap. Some random Carlton supporters did give me bit while wearing my Essendon gear, but yeh whatever. It doesn't bother me and its just a bit of fun. I like generalizing all Carlton and Collingwood supporters by their majority through my eyes, but its all a bit of fun. No one takes it to heart do they? If I told you all Carlton supporters are arrogant, would you take it to heart? If you are not arrogant, would you listen to me? Generalizing a whole race or religion though, is a different story.

An embarrassment?!?! Really, is it an embarrassment to seek truth and justice and unity and sovereignty in our world.

Surely you jest.

What the slogan Us v Them has thrown up is the idea of what it means to support your team???

No one minds people going to the football and saying come on Hawthorn, or come on North..

But when they make derogatory remarks over other teams or other supporters or other players..

that crosses the line..significantly

Supporters should concerntrate on the good of your own team and not the bad of the other team!

And as all Australians know, vilification - whether of race, creed, colour, someone's mother, or another - is not to be accepted in sporting crowds, workplaces, public transport, shopping centres, everyday life in general, and from certain politicians and former captains of industry or our media.

Football is an aesthetic display that can be admired by all but it’s also a violent contest and those two words don’t always sit comfortably next to ‘family outing’.

Trying to ensure that your supporters’ passion for the team doesn’t include expressing contempt for the opposing one, is a delicate operation.

I find the best arbiters of decent manners are children. If they turn around, in response to anything you shout, with an apprehensive expression, you know that you’ve gone too far.

Some people forget themselves in the excitement and tension of game day. Others are energised by the anarchy of it all and the relative freedom to express hateful opinions. It’s hard to believe though that mature looking adults decked out in their team’s colourful outfits are capable of vilifying anyone.

Supporters represent all socio-economic groups: the unemployed, the inner-city professionals, the comfortable outer suburbanites, the less well-off from the far-flung estates; and every personality type and behavioural trait.

If you add personal problems, alcohol and assorted lunatics to this human casserole things are bound to get over spiced.

Both Etihad and the MCG urge patrons to text a central security desk if they witness antisocial behaviour.

Over recent years the AFL has cleaned up the game, removing bash artists, sledgers and language no longer deemed appropriate. It's time to do it off the field too.

Got to acknowledge pretty accurate. GF this year underlined fact hardly anyone other than pie fans were supporting Collingwood.

Here's the ad that appeared in todays Hun:

Hiring someone with even moderate photoshop skills or an ad agency with a touch more creativity would go along way.

It's stereotyping; hardly comparable to racial abuse.

We can show good grace to people and still indulge is some banter. Even with Collingwood supporters.

My exact point. The sheep mentality of supporters needs to be stopped. If you see one of your own supporters cross the line at a game. Call them out.

We are all the best defence of our own Club against a bad name.

By being shown to be out of step with their team supporters, those who do vilify other supporters and opposition players can be called out and maybe; just maybe; made to think about their actions.

If you really want abuse to stop, start at Collingwood games. Go to Collingwood Vs St Kilda games. The crowd is atrocious. They are the type that we really should stamp out of AFL, not banter for jokes. That happens everywhere and thats all just a bit of fun.
