Our last 5 differentials are: -4, -15(!!!), -1, +4, +3. The two positives being against Port & Freo.

The Hawthorn drubbing tips the scales significantly. Without that game, we have won more centre clearances than not over the previous patch
Maybe the chips we eat are causing us to have hallucinations. Why is King so concerned about our centre clearance work if this is the case? That man bases everything on statisitics.

Couple of reasons. One being Hawthorn demolishing us, but I think that is an unlikely thing to occur again.

The second being that when we do lose them, we seem to concede scores often. I say this without the stats to back me up, but I imagine that is what King would be worrying about. I think that stems more from our loose zone (which may not be so loose without Moore)

I just think the ruck hit-outs aren’t that important. I’ve always felt all you really need is one competent big ruckman who has the tank to play at least ~85% TOG and the rest of the hit-outs taken by a relief forward don’t actually matter that much. This is how most teams line-up.

We were winning just fine earlier in the season with Frampton and AJ as our makeshift rucks. Getting our midfield right again is paramount. I don’t think Cameron and McStay will be a huge problem for the time being.

My faith in Fly and his coaching staff wavered for the first time when I watched Sicily dismantle us and we did nothing about it throughout the game. Before the first bounce I wanted Howe on Sicily and said so. It wasn't hindsight. How can four AFL coaches not see the need for quelling his influence?
Fly got burnt by his wife for apparently not making moves on Sicily.

McStay in the ruck is a terrifying prospect in the finals. He didn't get near the ball when competing at centre bounces and actually did better when simply not contesting the tap and acting like a fourth mid. But I keep warning Fly- you are one turned ankle from disaster if you enter the finals with one ruckman. It is madness.
If Cameron is subbed out it could be Howe going back and Frampton to first ruck. Depending who is subbed on it may not be the end of the world. Losing JDG mid game would, I feel, hurt more.

But you are making the assumption that Frampton stays in when Moore returns. Assuming Cox stays out this Friday, if Cameron goes down and Frampton has to take the ruck duties we are exposed in our backline. If Howe has to be dragged away from our forward line to take Hipwood or Daniher we are robbing our forward half of a much needed target and once again playing with two undesized key defenders-the very reason we recruited Frampton was to deal with this problem.

If we play both Cox and Cameron we lose some interchange rotation ability. I’m not sure which way we go. Just offering a possible solution. Personally I hope Cox finds something in the 2nds and ends up rucking by himself.

It’s absolutely ridiculous that we have one versus two on the ladder playing at Marvel when the MCG is vacant on Friday night. This is a huge gift to the Lions,by the way, playing on a ground where they have a winning record, rather than at the MCG where they can barely get a win at the best of times.

But we already have the flexibility with so many players who can run through the midfield for short stints so one less interchange rotation for a second tall is no huge sacrifice. Maynard, Josh, Elliott, Sidey, Crisp and McCreery can all pinch hit in the middle if required. In the finals we have Nick back as well. Rucks and tall forward targets are not so plentiful at Collingwood.

They plan to slow the opposition but it doesn't always work. When we cut the Cats up with damaging ball movement like we've done to most teams all year, it's not because Scott is a shit coach who didn't try to stop us.

I am happy they don’t get a chance to play at the G to better prepare themselves for the finals
Plus our slingshot style these days is pretty well suited to Marvel

I wonder how much an incentive it would be for Fly to win this week to make it more likely we play Brisbane or Port in first final? Instead of Melbourne

Or would he not care who we play ?

Of course they are making that assumption, as Frampton was playing with Moore in the side anyway

I really don't care if we win, lose or draw.
As long as we get through the game without any new injuries, from playing on that slab of concrete, prick of a ground.

I don't have facts to back up this statement but I think that the effects from playing at Marvel has a lasting effect the following week.

Agreed. The no more injuries is more important to me right now. We’ve made finals.

Marvel is a wrecking ball in some occasions compared to other grounds.

So if we beat the Lions, or the Bombers, or both, we finish top of the table and are highly likely to face the Dees at The G, which is a 50:50 prospect. Lose that and we’re likely to face Carlton at The G. Again, a 50:50 prospect. I’d call that the doomsday double.

Alternatively, if we lose both remaining H&A games, we will slip to second and are highly likely to face Port at The G, which looks a much more probable win. Meanwhile Brisbane would host Melbourne at the Gabba, with the loser of that likely to face Carlton.

I really hate the idea of going into finals in losing form but there seems to be a significant advantage for us in finishing second, not first.

Strategically, losing this week keeps our options open. We can then decide whether or not to go for the win against the Bombers in the final round.

If we beat Brisbane and then Melbourne win their last 2 we would probably be playing Brisbane first week, thing is though that Melbourne might not have much incentive to win next week because they could avoid travelling first week of finals with a loss and play us at the G instead, that's if port don't lose a game and they could lose to Freo, there are a lot of possibilities but two losses would almost certainly rule out having to play Carlton second week if we lost our first final. I'm not saying that I want to lose but playing Melbourne and then Carlton if we lost first week doesn't sound like much reward for finishing on top.

Exactly!

In terms of controlling the potential outcomes, it makes most sense to lose this week, even though I hate the idea.

Nope. After 20 minutes it was clear plan A was failing badly. There was no attempt to curtail Sicily's influence and we paid a big price. And I never said Fly was a s**t coach. He is an outstanding coach who had a bad day and made a mistake. It's not a sin to point that out. As I said, my criticism was not in hindsight. I called it before and during the game.

The problem with this theory is if we beat Brisbane this week and the Dees win their last 2 we will more likely be playing lions or power week 1
