Yep agree scrap the nominated ruck rule.

So, if we scrape the nominate ruck rule what happens when we have a ball up and Rockliff runs into the back of LDU and yells, UMP, I’M THE. RUCKMAN?

The ump has to give a free kick because LDU has blocked the ruckman.

Can’t you not see the chaos that will cause?

If you want to get rid of the “nominate ruckman” rule then you are saying you want to get rid of the Third Man Up rule because you can’t have one and not the other.

And if you want to get rid of the Third Man Up rule then you want to get rid of ruckman because they were being made obsolete before it was introduced.

It was all very simple until the umpires started giving free kicks to Bontempelli when his opponent blocked him from attempting to be third man up. Everyone on Level 3 could see what was happening but the umpires saw it differently.

The umps followed the rules. Most people on Level 3 are pretty naive when it comes to the rules.

Two players of the same team contest the ball before it hits the ground, pay a free against. Simple.

Just throw the ball up immediately, whoever contests it contests it, and if an infringement occurs pay the appropriate free kick. Teams will soon figure out how to avoid giving away unnecessary free kicks. Besides it's not like teams operate in a vacuum, they can still use their voices to talk to each other so that two players don't go up for the ball. Not to mention being able to drill various stoppage scenarios at training so it is second nature to them in game situations.

I know you put your umpire hat on with these sort of things and I get that, but in cases like this I would prefer there to be only one rule that's iffy/open to interpretation instead of the multiple rules they bring in to try and fix it that inadvertently create further problems.

That is a great read. I’m interested though how this story is always presented as Greig getting up on the last vote of the night and that’s what lead to the Richmond blokes cracking the shits, because Greig won by 4 votes so he must’ve already been up going into the last round. And he was actually 5 votes clear of KB, who came in 3rd (Gary Hardeman from Melbourne came 2nd).

Not sure if I’m missing something, but I think the only logical conclusion is that Richmond are a bunch of campaigners. Always have been. Always will be.

Obviously Richmond can’t count

You’re taking a black and white rule and making it grey, it’s the last thing we need. Let’s say Goldy and Lycett are wrestling in Ports forward line about to contest a ball up. Dixon jumps up, takes the ball cleanly from the ball up and kicks an easy goal. No of our guys can do anything because they are all expecting Lycett to be the ruckman.

There’s been no free given, cause Lycett has no idea Goldy is contesting the ruck, he’s just on his man and expecting McKay to ruck. Do you reckon everyone on level 3 would yell and scream at the ump??

It just can’t be done. It won’t work. And let’s be real, how long does it really take to nominate the rucks? About a second? And the umps normally doing it as he’s getting the ball or preparing to bounce.

People that complain about the nominating are just serial complainers and don’t really think through the consequences of removing the rule.

NORTH MELB
Herald Sun - Wednesday, 17 Mar 2021 - Page 13

COACH David Noble CAPTAIN Jack Ziebell ATTACK Life without Ben Brown begins now. As strange as it sounds, season 2021 isn’t necessarily about wins and losses for David Noble’s young Kangaroos. It will be about proving the right development system to fast-track some of the kids through the ranks. The new coach has already signalled his desire for a revolving forward line which will see mids, including Ben Cunnington and Jed Anderson (pictured), spending some time there, along with ruckman Todd Goldstein. But the focus will mainly be on Nick Larkey and Cam Zurhaar as the Kangaroos look for an even spread. The concern is a lack of drive from an undermanned midfield. DEFENCE The back half was under siege for much of last season and hopefully those further up the ground can make life a little more palatable for the defenders this season. There are still some good pillars, most notably Robbie Tarrant; Luke McDonald had his best season in 2020; and the recruitment of Aidan Corr, who can play on a variety of talls, smalls and mids, will play a key role. Given the profile of the list, it won’t be easy, but the Roos are keen to play with dare and excitement, starting from the back half.

Sad reality of your scenario is that it could so easily be true. One of our defenders letting Dixon roam free at the stoppage in the forward 50, and it's probably 30 seconds left with us up by 3 points. We all know what happens next....

Toasted muesli sucks. (Cereal complainer)

Does it count as a game in a player's games tally if they don't get subbed on? Does the 23rd player get a premiership medallion if they don't get subbed on?
There is no way the player won't get subbed on in a GF. Easy to fain a concussion to get a fresh player on and there's no next week for the subbed off player to miss.
