Well that was a week. We welcomed some new faces to the joys* of match threads, we rediscovered some tried and true routines and we were treated to a rousing rendition of Elton John's poignant classic 'Candle In The Wind'. The fact that 21 of us turned up was an outstanding result, but not the only one of the week.

Coming into this match we were on a three game winning streak and had won our previous encounter against the Sin Citizens, but the other side to that coin was the unnerving fact that we had not won a round one match since season 32. And when the hosts put seven goals on us in the first quarter there looked to be a familiar feeling coming from the sim. We however managed to even things up by the half, and we also won the final two quarters to salute to the tune of 26 points. It's our first round one win in ages, and the last time we did it... we made a prelim.



We ended up the round in fourth place, with an opportunity to knock off the ladder-leading Gumbies in round two who we also beat in our last encounter. Everything's comin' up Wazzas!!!

Coach The Donald made a few in-game changes, including moving former Mobbs Medallist Freofalcon from a back pocket to ruck rover. And the veteran repaid the faith with a 28 disposal/7 tackle/2 goal game to be arguably best on for us. Plenty others had decent games including ruckspud spudmaster (21 disposals/14 hitouts/3 tackles/1 goal), FootyGuy13 (19 disposals/6 marks/4 tackles/1 goal), TheInjuryFactory (22 disposals/6 tackles/1 goal), Ocha905 (23 disposals/7 marks), Reginald Perrin & pantskyle (23 disposals/1 goal each). raffrox was the pick of the debutants with a Clivesqe 17 disposal/6 mark/2 goal effort with Barrybran (14 disposals/1 goal) & brian_muz (11 disposals/3 marks/2 tackles) also performing admirably. Up front it was pocket porky Piggy Smalls who did the most damage with three goals while Dinsdale Falc raff & oldmate all kicked a brace each.

Coney Island Warriors 16.6 (102) defeated by Gumbies FFC 18.9 (117)​

Round two saw us at home for the first time in season 38. We were on a four game winning streak, had won our first round 1 fixture in seven seasons and the vibe of the place was high. Plus we had the added incentive of getting to celebrate oldmate's ascension to the pinnacle of Coney Island Life Membership. So we were in a decent mood as we welcomed the league-leading Gumbies to Van Cortlandt Park, in what was the first chance that boom recruit Barrybran had to face his former team since his high profile move in the off-season. And the Gumbies, being the magnanimous folk that they are, broadly greeted their former captain & icon.

It was something of a quieter week this week than the previous one, for obvious reasons. But there was enough spearmint milk fuelled activity to keep things humming along to the point that another 20 Wazzas had a part of the match thread.

Then game day appeared and, although I went to the stupid foopy, I did prepare for the game with a brian_muz assisted pregame hydration exercise. Did it help? Let's see...

After a slow start from both teams, the visitors kicked four goals to three in the first quarter, then they kicked another six goals to our one to give the Gumbies a 41 point half time lead. We had managed to reduce the deficit by ten points at the final change and cut another 16 points off by the time the final siren rang. So the four quarters ended up being two pleasing wins, a narrow defeat and an absolute shellacking, with the visitors ending up saluting to the tune of 15 points. And they were quite gracious about the result as well.

The fallout of our first loss of the season sees us drop form fourth to fifth on the ladder. Not too bad but still need to stem the tide.

Coach The Donald performed his go to coaching maneuver and just moved a heap of people around for no reason whatsover. We did have some fantastic performances again though, led by Ocha905 (24 disposals/7 tackles 3 goals) to lead all comers, as well as spudmaster (21 disposals/16 hitouts/6 tackles/1 goal), TheInjuryFactory (21 disposals/8 tackles) & Dinsdale (17 disposals/5 marks/3 goals). Piggy Smalls kicked another four goals to lead the Wooshette after two rounds, while The Filth Wizard & Snuffaluphagus (2 each) joined Piggy, Ocha & Dins as multiple goal scorers.

Coney Island Warriors 10.7 (67) defeated by Fighting Furies 13.3 (81)​

We remained at home in round three as we welcomed the Furies to Van Cortlandt Park with hopes of bouncing back from the loss to the Gumbies. Speaking of losses, the week began with the sad news of Jack Karlson's passing. You know Jack, he was the bloke who was falsely arrested in Brisbane in the early 90's while eating a succulent Chinese meal and declared it it was 'Democracy Manifest' (among other things). So naturally a hastily-coupled miniature novelty trophy was struck which was to be awarded to the winner of the the qooty. The week also saw the second milestone of the season as Mofra brought up his 100th game, which is highlighted in the previous threadmarked post. The rest of the week led itself to the usual japes and conviviality that comes from this fixture between our two clubs. There was some regrettable foopballing chatter and some Olympicality before the game day came around, and we were given muddy conditions.

Goals to pantskyle & Snuffaluphagus saw us take a 12 point lead within the first 8 minutes of the match. Unfortunately the final siren did not sound immediately afterwards, but what did instead happen was us conceding the next nine goals which made our 12 point lead turn into a 44 point deficit. The Filth Wizard then kicked the first of his four goals to see the lead at the big break reduce to 36 points, and despite us winning the second half for the third match in a row the lead was too much as we ended up falling short by 14 points. It was a second week where one big quarter from the opposition was enough to do us in, something we'll have to address in the coming rounds who am I kidding it's something we'll just have to hope the sim not do to us.

The second loss on the trot saw us drop two spots on the ladder, but the good news is that we're still in the top eight and we have no milestones to trip us up in round 4.

Ocha905's wonderful start to the season continues as he put together an 18 disposal/7 tackle/1 goal performance to lead the way along with TheInjuryFactory (14 disposals/6 tackles/1 goal), spudmaster (15 disposals/11 hitouts/1 goal), Reginald Perrin (12 disposals/5 marks/1 goal) & pantskyle (16 disposals/1 goal). Full forward The Filth Wizard had his best game of the season, kicking 4 goals from 7 shots to be the only multiple goal kicker.

Ophidian Old Boys 11.4 (70) defeated by Coney Island Warriors 16.10 (106)​

After a couple of home defeats it was time to hit the road again, which made sense not only because we'd won our previous four away games but that's what the fixture said we had to do. So away it was, westward to Spotswood to face the reigning premiers. We got the usual guff - the use of AI, the racism inherent in the access level stuff, the Benny Hill-esqe innuendo, the overinflated sense of entitlement, a good dose of Gaelic fare and the hooved animals. Adding a mirror to reflect on the week brought the banter to a more basic level, and at this point I'd like to thank the [checks notes] one and a half of you who contributed. You are the real hero. So yeah the week really did span the genres!

We then got a game day in. By all reports it was going to be a common L for us and by the end of the first quarter of a rainy Sunday arvo it looked like the peanut gallery had their crystal balls plugged in. But then a six-goal-to-one second quarter turned an 11 point first quarter deficit into a 24 point half time lead. But wait there's more! Another five goals to two in the third quarter extended the lead to 40, and that's where it pretty much levelled out to leave us 36 points to the good at the final siren thanks to brian_muz kicking his first goal in the SFA at his third attempt in the last four minutes of the match.

The most unexpected of victories (apparently) saw us square our season ledger and rise two spots on the ladder before another trip this week.

The midfield made hay again in rainy conditions with FootyGuy13 (24 disposals/5 marks/2 goals), Ocha905 (21 disposals/6 tackles/1 goal), spudmaster (23 disposals/9 hitouts/3 tackles), pantskyle (22 disposals/4 marks/1 goal) & TheInjuryFactory (21 disposals/5 tackles) all amongst it. The Filth Wizard would back the clock with his first Michelle for the season, while Mesc & Piggy Smalls joined Guy in kicking two goals each. And shout out to Raveneyes for keeping the OOF full forward to a single goal!

West Coast Wonders 16.8 (104) defeated by Coney Island Warriors 16.13 (109)​

Round five saw us on the second leg of an away trip. After surviving the slums of Spotswood we took a trip to the Colosseum to face a West Coast outfit who were in similar levels of disarray to their foopy counterparts. They were one of two teams to have suffered teamsheetitis (ironically we play the other one this coming week), and as a result one of their captains was on the lam. Good thing they have a spare captain.

They also have a Clarke who was having a big numbered milestone. 550 to be precise. Luckily we has three milestones courtesy of Freofalcon playing game 300, TheInjuryFactory playing game 200 and Piggy Smalls playing his 100th for us so our 600 was more than Clarke's 550. Normally we don't do too good with milestones, but having multiple ones in the same round seems to work a treat.

When game day came around however that treat was looking more like a trick for a while there. An even Steven first quarter led to a 20 point half time deficit and then another goal added to it by three quarter time. But then the final quarter happened. The hosts kicked another three goals and two behinds to finish on an accurate 16.8. We on the other hand put on another seven goals and nine points. Inaccurate yet effective, and the best was very much saved until last. How's this for last minute heroics?

Barrybran with the speccy, the Linda Blair moves, the shirt removal, the several bounces and the match winning goal to help us salute for our three milestoners!! Miracles are real, and they are the colour of persimmon.

Our third win of the season saw us jump another place on the ladder, back into the top four.

There were many fine performances on a warm day. 300 gamer Freofalcon replaced 200 gamer TheInjuryFactory as rover and picked up 6 tackles to go with 14 disposals. TIF then usurped spudmaster and spent some rare time in the ruck with a career-high 8 hitouts (out of 14 in total) to go with 17 disposals, 6 tackles and one goal three behinds. The centreline of FootyGuy13 (22 disposals/6 marks/5 tackles), pantskyle (17 disposals/6 marks/1 goal) and oldmate (20 disposals/6 marks/2 tackles/1 goal) had plenty of it. Everyone in the forward line kicked multiple goals, led by The Filth Wizard (3 goals 5 behinds) with Piggy Smalls zackah Dinsdale brian_muz & Barrybran all kicking two each. And Purple7x08_24 (19 disposals/7 marks) returned to his All-SFA form, however conceding three free kicks wasn't ideal.

Coney Island Warriors 9.5 (59) defeated by Dragons FFC 16.10 (106)​

Death, taxes and losing to the Dragons. We were at home, we observed the 10th anniversary of Whore Tree Day, we had no milestones (singular or plural), we had warm conditions and we were above them on the ladder. The horny cat and the avocado were pretty jovial. We even won the first quarter. But no. No, no, f*cken no.

Conceding eleven goals and scoring two in the middle quarters was not the masterstroke coach The Donald may have thought it would be, with four goals apiece in the final quarter consigned the last quarter heroics of last week into the history books as we finished up 47 points in the red. It was our biggest defeat of the season and our fifth loss in a row in a fixture where we last tasted victory ten games ago and have only won twice in the previous twenty one (21) encounters. Yeah there was a draw in there as well but if you're gonna argue that point then we're throwing hands. I talk about only worrying about the things in our control but this extreme simhousery needs to be called out. Random my red ring.

Anyhoo, we're still in the top eight - fifth to be precise. We play the team that replaced us in the top four, who are led by the owner of the tamagotchi which has given us nothing but pain so imma have words with him. We're playing away and have won our last six away games, with the yang to that yin being us losing our last four home games.

spudmaster found himself ousted from the ruck for the second week in a row, this time by Reginald Perrin who turned back the clock with a 23 disposal/13 hitout/3 tackle/1 goal performance. Other to do well include Ocha905 (17 disposals/7 tackles), pantskyle (21 disposals/4 marks/2 tackles), TheInjuryFactory (18 disposals/ 5 tackles/1 goal) & Purple7x08_24 (20 disposals/5 marks). I did alright as well. Up front Barrybran & zackah were the only multiple goal kickers with two each in a week where the two leading scorers for the season in The Filth Wizard & Piggy Smalls were held goalless.

It will come as a surprise to nobody, not even Shock McSurpriseface from Unbelievable USA, that the award for the leading goal kicker should be bestowed upon the full forward. And when you have one of the preeminent full forwards in SFA history, it's only fitting that The Filth Wizard has won his fourth straight Wooshette Medal with a 58 goal haul in season 38. Filthy has only 21 goals left to get until he reaches the magical 1000 mark. Will he do a Smudge and finish season 39 on 9999? I highly doubt it, but man it would be funny as heck aye!

Roys FFC 13.13 (91) defeated by Coney Island Warriors 15.17 (107)​

We were back on the road in round seven, this time to head to the BJO to face a Roys side who were one spot above us on the ladder. It was the quietest week of the season thus far but it wasn't without stuff. Eighteen of us got involved at some point, while for the hosts Mobbs named a street, Mike provided an amusing picture and 3KZ got all mystic.

Then game day dawned. phil posted a game and we had a pretty even first quarter before the second quarter saw us kick 5 goals to 1 in what was the defining quarter of the match. The rest of the match saw us concede nine goals and kick seven, but the 32 point half time lead was enough of a buffer to see us finish 16 points to the good.

The win was enough to not only see us leapfrog Roy but also the Sin Citizens to finish the round in third place.

Reginald Perrin continued his rick vein of form, coming off the bench to notch a 23 disposal/4 tackle/2 goal effort. TheInjuryFactory found himself in the ruck again (I KNOW RIGHT???!?) and gave us 17 disposals, 7 hitouts, 3 tackles & 2 goals after swapping placed with spudmaster who finished with 19 disposals/6 tackles/1 hitout. Rookie brian_muz (16 disposals/6 marks/2 goals) did well off a flank, Dinsdale (16 disposals/6 marks/3 behinds) provided and effective yet inaccurate presence up forward, zackah led the team with 4 goals while Paracleet came into the side after some strong work in the magoos and kicked a couple of handy goals.

Baghdad Bombers 19.2 (116) defeated by Coney Island Warriors 25.13 (163)​

We were on the road again, which doesn't seem to faze us given we've won the last six away games before going to Abdu Prison. We were up against a Bombers outfit that had only just popped their qooty cherry the previous week so were keen to not let that happen again, if you believe the rhetoric they produced during the week.

For us the week was about one thing - celebrating the second multi-milestone event of the season as The Filth Wizard was playing game number 400 and Reginald Perrin was playing exactly half that (still an impressive 200 games). It may not have gained as much traction as I would have liked but it did bring former Wazza Norm Landrover out from whatever bush he's been in. The sim has looked after us in previous multiple milestonings so it was only a matter of time before we found out if that trend would continue.

The first quarter was very promising, where we kicked six goals to the Babylonian one. The second quarter? Not so much - we kicked another three but conceded nine to finish the fist half a point down. The third was a bit better with us kicking six goals to five to both have 15 by three quarter time (although we had 10 behinds to their one) to set us up for a close final quarter. However it was not close. The Bombers kicked another four goals, but we kicked another ten! So by the time the Rubenesque woman starter belting one out we were 47 points to the good!!!

Our biggest score in quite a while saw us do absolutely nothing on the ladder, as we remained in third place.

Another week where spudmaster was unceremoniously dumped from the ruck. Fortune favours the potatoes though as he landed on TheInjuryFactory again, and proceeded to have a 34 disposal/10 tackle/1 goal game which was an equal career high game for disposals, career high for tackles and one point off a career high DT game. Ocha905 (22 disposals/6 tackles/ 3 goals) continued his fine form, brian_muz (30 disposals/5 marks/3 goals) played by far the best game of his 8-game career, while pantskyle (25 disposals/5 marks/2 tackles/1 goal), Purple7x08_24 (21 disposals/14 hitouts/2 tackles/2 goals), FootyGuy13 (26 disposals/8 marks), toxic (22 disposals/8 marks) & Barrybran (19 disposals/9 marks/2 goals but conceding 5 frees) all had plenty of it. Up front The Filth Wizard (3 goals), Dinsdale (3 goals) zackah (2 goals) Freofalcon (2 goals) & Piggy Smalls (2 goals) joined Ocha, brian Purple & Baz as the nine Wazzas who kicked multiple goals.
