The fabled yet ignored International Round was reintroduced for some reason or other by the admin who last presided over its existence, and sent us & the Furies to the Azteca Stadium in Mexico City. spudmaster took some avatar-related initiative that doesn't involve a song that sounds like cats rooting, Raveneyes gave his much-loved Wazzadance gif an ethnically-appropriate refresh, FootyGuy13 cracked out the DuoLingo and Dinsdale thankfully left the body board cover behind. Stokey even came along for the ride. We also got to induct TubbsFarquhar as the 18th Life Member of the club, an auspicious occasion but one fraught with danger. Not only because it was a milestone, but he wanted us to eat genuine Mexican street food. ¡¡Ay ay ay!!

After a week of 'south-of-the-border' hospitality, we got to game day. It was a bit of a lucho libre wrestle for the first quarter, then either the aforementioned street food of the aftermath of siesta kicked in and the Furies got out to a five goal lead halfway through the third quarter. We then got into the marching powder, kicking five goals in eight minutes. From there we both put our wrestling masks back on and went at each other for the rest of the match before El Simulator Diablo decided to step in and let a former Warrior give the opposition the lead with the final kick of the game. We then cracked the shits made like the massacre of Cholula and destroyed the absolute dump of a place. Stupid Mexico.

The result saw us drop to third on the ladder, half a game from top spot and two games from ninth place.

The onball brigade did a heap of the heavy lifting with Ocha905 (25 disposals/7 tackles), spudmaster (20 disposals/18 hitouts/2 goals), TheInjuryFactory (15 disposals/10 tackles) and getting plenty of it, ably assisted by the centreline of FootyGuy13 (19 disposals/6 marks/3 tackles) pantskyle (22 disposals/2 marks/3 goals) and oldmate (21 disposals/5 marks) while The Filth Wizard (4 goals) Barrybran (3 goals) brian_muz (2 goals) & the birthday boy TubbsFarquhar (2 goals in a rare foray forward) all impacted the scoreboard.

Coney Island Warriors 13.14 (92) defeat Sin City Swamprats 12.7 (79)​

Thanks to the second bye of the season fast approaching, round 16 was the penultimate match of the home and away season, and we had the fourth double up in the form of the Sin Citizens who came to Van Cortlandt Park on the back of a rare win. We on the other hand were on two losses on the trot, a run we were keen to arrest to maintain our position in the top half of the eight. The Rats were particularly ratty, what with Lazarus the rookie, Papa Gags, my arch nemesis and some journeyman wishing the week away. The undoubted highlight of the week though was TheInjuryFactory taking us on a magical journey through the world of cheese. Tres bien, bossman!

Oldmate finally got his wish though, and we got to game day. Harry Potter had us on the late shift, we didn't turn up when she did start the show and when we did there were more shanks than Stabby the Butcher (fun fact: there is an actual Stabby the butcher in Anglesea, which is where I went while waiting for the game to begin). The visitors led by 5 points at the first break and 23 by the main break.

Apparently kicking 2 goals in a half of qooty is not good, so we decided to kick more in the second half. We trimmed the deficit to 9 points by three quarter time, and kicked six goals to three in the final stanza to finish up 13 points to the good. The win not only guaranteed finals qooty for the first time in two seasons but, as the below picture shows, sees us back on top of the ladder with two rounds remaining!!!

Coach The Donald went absolutely bonkers with the positional changes, which meant that 60% of the team had spent time on the bench for the game. Didn't stop some admirable performances though with pantskyle (25 disposals/6 marks/2 goals), zackah (13 disposals/3 marks/3 tackles/4 goals in his 300th game as a Wazza), spudmaster (19 disposals/9 hitouts/3 tackles/2 goals, Mesc (15 disposals/4 tackles/3 marks/2 goals), Ocha905 (18 disposals/4 tackles/1 goal), TubbsFarquhar (18 disposals/4 marks) and ya boi (21 disposals/7 marks/4 tackles) all suitably admirable.

Coney Island Warriors 15.4 (94) defeated by East Side Hawks 17.11 (113)​

It took 18 rounds, but we finally got to complete the set of opponents when the East Side Hawks came to town. You may remember them from such rebrands as the Phoenix and the Bin Chickens. Anyhoo, a few of them came to say hi including the rasslin' fan who hates cricket, off-brand Godzilla, the one who came late and the captain of God's Country.

Game Day Night soon arrived, and all we needed was a win to secure the third minor premiership in our history. Instead we leaked eight first-quarter goals and 13 by the half. That we reduced the deficit to 19 points by the time the singing lady got fat was encouraging if futile, and the loss meant that we were knocked off a rung from the ladder. Finals qooty was secured though and, thanks to some other kind results, we have the double chance and home ground advantage which didn't mean much this week but still. And in yet another fixturing quirk, we got to play the team we waited 18 rounds to play for two weeks in a row.

Pretty even performance from us with the highlights being performances from Ocha905 (19 disposals/5 tackles/2 goals), TheInjuryFactory (17 disposals/6 tackles/2 goals), TubbsFarquhar (21 disposals/5 marks/3 tackles), Dinsdale (13 disposals/4 goals), brian_muz (10 disposals/6 marks/3 goals) & yours truly (24 disposals/7 marks/punched four opponents).

I think we all huddled up to say "1-2-3 Bali!" when the Dragons final matchup was announced.

Now we come to the awarding of this season's Pwned Trophy. This goes to the player who makes the opposition melt the hardest and the rest of us laugh our arses off. It is one of the club's highest honours, passed down through the generations of Wazzas in recognition of their services to lulz.

There were quite a few worthy noms this season. Some were individual like Barrybran's take down of "budget Dingster" in round 11, Dinsdale and his fake bingo card in round 6, my actual OOF checklist in round 4 and TheInjuryFactory with his Tour de Fromage in round 16. Some were a group effort like the regular Season of Guts, while others were from outside of the SFA such as Dinsdale copping a turniping from his wife, our disdain for the town of Burnie and our completely abominable usage of the Spanish language.

One pwnage event stands out above all others in season 38, and it even had a sequel. That is of course the whole Cirque du Raz shitshow from round one which saw him leave before actually playing a game of qooty, only to return later in the season denying any knowledge of said event. The problem with it is though that it was pretty much the whole team that were involved and as the saying goes, 'the team that pwn together stay together'. I have but one Pwned Trophy to give however and it came in round 7 when a Roy stalwart was trying to go all esoteric & mystical. Our boy though was having none of that...

For the second week in a row we were hosting the East Siders. Not a lot changed over the course of the two weeks, pretty much everything there was to be said was said the first time around but given the second time around was a final there was a bit more of a spring in our collective step. I did want to prevent our visitors making a fast start however, so landmines it was. Would they make a difference come Game Day? Or would lightning strike twice?

Both as it turns out. Yeah the landmines kinda did make a difference in that we only conceded four goals in the first quarter this week rather than the eight of the previous one, and by half time the margin was the same as when the game began. At this point I was hoping that we would have as strong of a second half as we did in round 18, and at a few points we did get out to a two goal lead. Then oldmate simulator woke up and realised who it was dealing with, allowing the bin chickens the final three goals of the game to hand us a five point defeat. So yeah lightning did strike twice. Guess I need more landmines.

The double chance means we get a second chance, with the Royals giving us a semi.

Coney Island Warriors 18.8 (116) defeat Gold City Royals 16.6 (102)​

In a move that some have commented as "pessimistic as heck", I decided to book leave during the finals. I would have gotten away with it too it wasn't for that pesky sim doing us dirty in the qualifying final, but it worked in our favour as it turned out. We got the double chance, and the Royals came to visit for a semi final in our last game at Van Cortlandt Park for Season 38. We had a great and/or horrible week in the banter stakes, I'm not sure.

We also had a game day. The first quarter was a bit of a shitshow as we conceded seven goals and kicked one. This somehow failed to deter us however, as we spent the next two quarters pegging back the deficit from 35 points at quarter time to a mere four points at three quarter time. And after kicking the first three goals of the final quarter we enjoyed a 14 point lead with 15 minutes remaining. It took five more minutes for us to lose that lead, before goals to TheInjuryFactory & The Filth Wizard in the final five minutes saw the 14 point lead reestablished at the final siren. A 49 point turnaround in three quarters that saw us progress into our first preliminary final since season 35, which is against the... oh, we're so boned.

Plenty of heroes were wearing persimmon at Van Cortlandt Park. Heroes such as FootyGuy13 (27 disposals/7 marks/2 goals), spudmaster (21 disposals/18 hitouts/4 tackles/1 goal), The Filth Wizard (5 goals straight), Ocha905 (21 disposals/6 tackles), TheInjuryFactory (19 disposals/7 tackles/1 goal), pantskyle (24 disposals/5 marks/2 goals), zackah (16 disposals/7 marks/1 goal), Dinsdale (15 disposals/6 marks/1 goal) and Piggy Smalls & Reginald Perrin (2 goals each). In fact everyone was a hero that day. The greatest hero though was me, who sacrificed the best part of the week slaving over a hot laptop for the good of the team, only to find myself banished to some winery or other in South Australia. All I do is give!

Coney Island Warriors 18.8 (116) defeat Gold City Royals 16.6 (102)​

In a move that some have commented as "pessimistic as heck", I decided to book leave during the finals. I would have gotten away with it too it wasn't for that pesky sim doing us dirty in the qualifying final, but it worked in our favour as it turned out. We got the double chance, and the Royals came to visit for a semi final in our last game at Van Cortlandt Park for Season 38. We had a great and/or horrible week in the banter stakes, I'm not sure.

We also had a game day. The first quarter was a bit of a shitshow as we conceded seven goals and kicked one. This somehow failed to deter us however, as we spent the next two quarters pegging back the deficit from 35 points at quarter time to a mere four points at three quarter time. And after kicking the first three goals of the final quarter we enjoyed a 14 point lead with 15 minutes remaining. It took five more minutes for us to lose that lead, before goals to TheInjuryFactory & The Filth Wizard in the final five minutes saw the 14 point lead reestablished at the final siren. A 49 point turnaround in three quarters that saw us progress into our first preliminary final since season 35, which is against the... oh, we're so boned.

Plenty of heroes were wearing persimmon at Van Cortlandt Park. Heroes such as FootyGuy13 (27 disposals/7 marks/2 goals), spudmaster (21 disposals/18 hitouts/4 tackles/1 goal), The Filth Wizard (5 goals straight), Ocha905 (21 disposals/6 tackles), TheInjuryFactory (19 disposals/7 tackles/1 goal), pantskyle (24 disposals/5 marks/2 goals), zackah (16 disposals/7 marks/1 goal), Dinsdale (15 disposals/6 marks/1 goal) and Piggy Smalls & Reginald Perrin (2 goals each). In fact everyone was a hero that day. The greatest hero though was me, who sacrificed the best part of the week slaving over a hot laptop for the good of the team, only to find myself banished to some winery or other in South Australia. All I do is give!
