I hope it's 2 years for Duggan, 3 at the absolute outside. If there's anything we should have learnt from the peaks and troughs of contending and competing in the AFL, it's that our list hits a cliff once players approach the age of 30.
Ideally we would try to front load contracts for older players, back load contracts for younger players.

Older players who are no longer performing might be more likely to retire off their own back if they aren't getting paid enough in their last years (see Gaff this year).

Young players who want to leave may be less likely to ask for a trade until their contract is up, knowing the big money is coming in the final years.

Doesn't always work like this (of course), but should be the ideal scenario IMO.

Also any contract for a player reaching 30+ should have triggers in it to protect the club.

Wouldn't be surprised if we set out Gaffs contract like that on purpose to reward loyalty. Two year trigger on good coin but fat coin in the last years. It was almost inconceivable that he wouldn't make 300+ games.

Which is the point that I was trying to make. We seem to be falling for the same trap on repeat. Quality games of footy from our 30y.o.+ players should absolutely be considered a bonus, but not a foregone conclusion. Duggan has banged up knees. He too could fall off a cliff in a couple of seasons.

Been a massive fan of Judd McVee we should be into him offering a big contract
Guys with elite endurance and speed and good kicking are so valuable
Happily offer a huge contract for him

Trent Rivers is another out of contract next year

Both above would be best 22

From Brisbane

Jaxon Prior good sized defender
James Tunstill inside mid good pace very good kick in traffic

Rivers isn’t out of contract next year, he’s locked in until 2027 unfortunately.

Agree about going after McVee.

No thanks to Prior and Tunstill.

Duggan turns 28 late this year (December)

A 3 year deal would see him through until the end of 2027. He’d be 31 throughout 2028 if he gets a 4th year, turning 32 only after the season ends

It should ideally be a 3 year deal with maybe a games played trigger for a 4th year

Gun. Both of them are, but McVee would be much cheaper.

I am a fan Tunstill in the best every week for Brissy reserves just turned 20
Gets lot of the footy but hard to break into that midfield as a inside mid.

What don't you like about him ?

Agreed. Tunstill rated higher than Dev over there.

Id much rather bring in Tunstill as he seems to be improving, hard to break into that team, And he has this weekend,

For gods sake, don’t say his name, you know what happens when you say his name…

He's worth more than JHF due to him being combo
1. Fan favourite all the causal nuffies love his bash and crash. He's got a cult following
2. Playing abilities

He's not purely worth more then JHF due to playing abilities. Number 1 matters. Since you see carltob and other vic clubs fans using the line throw everything at him.

The amazing thing about Harley reid is his not so reliance of speed.

You look at JHF and Wardlaw they are speedsters that rely on their speed to get through contest. Harley does not. I'm amazed by his ability to get space without necessarily needing speed. He has almost a Sam Mitchell way of getting space (bad example but can't think of another player who does not speed but always gets to space)

And no when I mean create space I don't mean Harley fending off. I mean the space he gets prior to fending off.

Make no mistake Harley reid has speed (not saying he doesn't). He tested from what I read above state average

Harley would go for much more than JHF for the simple reason of demand.

Only two clubs could have landed JHF.

There are 10 clubs in Victoria who would offer their 1st born sons to land him. The bidding war would be unheard of.

Devon Robertson dropped from Brissy team. Who else is glad we didnt get him? I only wanted him if it cost us nothing last year. Ive been watching Brissy games and focusing on Robertson and hes done nothing this year, or last.

Glad we didn’t get him. It means we probably wouldn’t have Clay Hall.

If we did trade for him, this board would be demanding that he be dropped for getting >10 disposals and butchering the ball and taking CBA’s from Harley.

Things could easily change by the end of this year. At the moment McVee is projecting to be a better player than Rivers.

Nice thought, but it doesn't work that way anymore.

Players nominate a Club and the best that you can hope for is that you extract maximum, that the nominated Club has to offer.

Take two extremes say the current first and a future first rounder as a start point.

What does that look like for Hawthorn v Carlton as they sit at very much different ends of the ladder.

Player managers start working a long way out when they know a top quality player is on the move and they canvas both interest in the trade and also who has the draft capital too realistically be able to cut a deal.

Judd and his manager Paul Conners, changed the landscape of how a player requests a trade and since then, the power shift has been passed into the hands of the player not the Club.

Out of contract I agree.

In contract we must agree and that would be for the team with a very attractive offer.

Tim Kelly exhibit A.

If Ried one day wants to move we need to do that when he is under contract to get real value.

IF Harley leaves, he isn’t leaving us to go to a bottom team.

The likelihood the team he nominates has a top 2 or even top 4 pick is pretty low.

A trade for an out of contract Reid will be similar to what Melbourne got for Jackson after 3 years. 2x 1st round picks and a 2nd.

We might see clubs in 2025 trading their picks in to 2026 and stockpiling picks if Harley hasn’t signed by then. Similar to what Freo did this year.

I rate Tunstill, very good at the clearance. Would be cheap and looks to have added versatility at Brissie.

Jack Carroll seems very tight with the young group. Would definitely be have a crack but $$$$ would be high overs.

See what happens when Walsh comes back

What are these player trade value if we finish bottom.

Jack Carroll? PSD threat
Erasmus? Contract
Tunstill? Contract
Buss? OOC
Sheldrick? Contract

All should be on our radar but hard to see how we get any contracted players with not wanting to lose Picks. Unless we get the draft assistance where we have to trade.

Most of those players would be valued around our 2nd rounder.

Busslinger a F2nd because of the PSD threat.

I haven’t seen much of Tunstill so can’t speak about what his value would be.

Sydney won’t let Sheldrick go for unders while in contract. He’s contracted and a rising star nominee (against us no less). He’s probably slightly increased his value while contracted. Pick 15-18.

Fair value for Erasmus is probably slightly less than what Feo paid for a contracted Jordan Clark - pick 21 and F3 for Clark and F4, so something 22-27. Doubt Freo would be willing to let him be traded to us while under contract.

Carroll- Hard to value, but something mid 2nd round is probably fair.

Just not convinced he’ll be a good AFL player, I will say I think he has more upside than Robertson at least though.

All great options and should be targets (aiming for 2 min) we can offer very good money

The cap doesnt need to be used on a million dollar players

Based on getting x1 end of round pick for PP

Our trade capital sould be PP, R2, FR2

The addition of Buss, Baker and Eramus/Sheldrick would be some nice additions this off season

A PP on Baker or busslinger would be mint they would add a lot to the team at no expense. End of round1 PP I think is fair for these players

Wouldn't touch erasmus, I think he's in the same mould as robertson unless he was delisted and we Rookied him. Battler, top10 bust

Id bring in mcluggage at whatever price. I think he's a ok footballer not a A grader it's just convenient we have cap space and costs us nothing assuming we won't meet the salary cap minimum

Try and trade off someone like petrucelle for a 3rd or 4th round pic if another club was dumb enough. We'd keep our first pic (probably 1) and bundle our 2nd 4th and 4th rounders(petrucelle) on either Ess or hawks first pic who don't have many pics this year.

Walk away with:
Busslinger
Mcluggage
1st pic - jagga/smillie
1st round(hawks or Ess)- trainor/moraes

At the expense of:
Gaff
Trew
Rotham
Luke Edwards or JJ the way he's going atm
