Latest news and rumours

Done deals:

  • Zane Trew, Jamaine Jones and Jordyn Baker delisted

Ongoing discussions:

  • List Manager Matt Clarke appeared on Sept 11 Gettable - Click spoiler below for summary
On the draft: "We predicted that the draft was strong, but it's probably gotten stronger during the year."

On top end of draft: "You could probably make five or six different choices and get it right."

On Pick 3: "I reckon there's five (players) around that mark."

On splitting: "I think you want to hold an early selection if you can. The depth of this group allows you to maybe have some movement there, and see what you can do to bring in more talent in the first 20-25 picks. Easier said than done, and I think most clubs would be saying the same thing. We'll see what we can do."

On Liam Baker: "He's still yet to make a decision. They're still weighing up a few things. We'd love to get Liam on board from what he offers from a talent and leadership point of view. We understand where we're at as a group, we're rebuilding our group, we need to add some guys in the middle tier to support our young group."

On Jack Graham: "We've got a number of players that we're speaking to. A bit of a wait and see on that one as well. We'll talk to a number of guys."

On Shai Bolton: "I think it will be difficult for anybody, really. He's heavily contracted and a high quality player."

On James Peatling: "He's heavily involved in a finals series at the moment so I don't want to comment too much on it, but I think there's a number of guys that have been playing really good footy this year that could suit what we do and what other clubs do. He's taken his footy to another level this year."

On Tom Barrass: "We've had an early discussion with Hawthorn about it, they understand where we're at. He's nominated Hawthorn as his ideal destination. We want what we think he's worth, as a genuine key back in the competition that can do what he can do. We're obviously mindful of getting an appropriate deal for West Coast."

On Tom Clurey: "Maybe (note: sounded very non enthused). We'd probably need some key back depth, whether that's through the draft or trade and free agency."

On Jack Darling: "We've had initial discussions with his management group about (moving). We're open to talking, as we are with all of our players, but Jack's contracted with us."

On Liam Ryan: "I expect him to be at West Coast next year, yes." (The most definitive answer of the day by a mile, a non-starter of a talking point.)

On out of contact players e.g. Rotham, Witherden, Jones: "We're still working through what it looks like from a list point of view, and how many selections we'll want to have, and players that may come in and potentially may go out. You might want to give a coach an opportunity to look at these guys."

On Harley Reid: "We've had discussions most of the year with his management group. I think it sits in a really good place. We're open to doing really whatever they want to do to be honest. We're really confident in building the right system around Harley, on and off field, to make sure that he's really comfortable, that he's going to play his best footy, and his long term future."

On Jake Waterman's new deal: "Yep, really close. We're working really closely with his management on that. I expect that we'll have something done pretty soon."

On Oscar Allen: "We've been talking with Oscar and his manager most of the year on that one. We're going through some stuff at the moment. I think we'll be ok with that one."

St Kilda offer pick 8 for Tom Barrass?

Where are we getting 14 from?

We're not, those of us who are growing dumber by the hour by keeping up with this thread have seen others making the same mistake a couple of times by assuming we already have 14 before trading Barrass out. I'm just being my normal clown self and carrying on with it.

14 and 23 are gonna go real hard in this draft :thumbsu:

A lot of you guys need to chill.

This trade between Carlton and Hawthorn is good for everyone.

Eagles want a 1st and 2nd and hawks don't want to pay that. They want to keep a 2nd next year.

Mackenzie has cleverly unlocked an extra 2nd so now we can satisfy Clark with a 1st and 2nd while keeping a 2nd next year

The only difference is that the Eagles get a F1 instead of 14. But that strengthens the possibility of getting Warner next year anyway.

Everyone wins here.

Next years draft will be the most compromised in AFL history so no. Everyone does not win here.

Pick 14 wasn’t going to unlock just Baker for us. The future firsts don’t hold the same capitol. Good on you, you held your ground but so did we and we’re not the one approaching and offering 5 year deals to contracted opposition players.

Go get us what is fair or dont. We’re more than happy to welcome Tom back.

The upset isn't because of public club comments, or lack thereof (apart from some dumbass reactions to Clarke's innocuous press conference remarks), it's a preemptive reaction to the trades we're being told are actually going to go down. Just rumours, yes, but being delivered authoritatively and repeatedly and hence taken at face value. I'd love nothing more than for them to be proven false and my outrage unnecessary and silly.

Got your wish then.

That's a very big difference and if it becomes F1+F2 then I'm not sure it'll get it done.

No extra picks in this years draft isn't very appealing.

The Hawks win here because its a worse offer than the one we've already rejected.

One of them suggested that they trade Hawthorn's F1st and Carlton's F1st for Barrass and our pick 26 (currently), which would be absolutely ridiculous as it would mean that this season we'd be left with pick 3 and then pick 63 as our 2nd pick which is exactly the opposite of what Clarke indicated he wanted to achieve.
Future picks are worth less. It should now be Hawthorn's F1st and Carlton's F1st for Barrass.

So Hawks wanted to pay 14, then estimated future picks trade of their 32 (ish) for our 40 (ish). Noting both those future picks would be pushed back by academy picks.

That is rubbish for TB. If we weren’t expected to send a F3 back it would be an ‘unders but accepted at last minute’ option.

Hawks probably unlikely to offer 2x F1 (I.e 14 + Hawks F1 for TB + Carlton F2 net to them).

I don’t think us sending our F2 back for 2x F1 is a good deal (probably worse than the aforementioned 14 + future swap deal).

I wonder if we can find a way to do something with the swans (around Hawks or Carl F1). Apparently they are OK with moving 19 to the future, would they swap 19 + F2 for haw/car F1 (assume they would want their choice of which one) plus our F3 (their F2 to our F3 should be like 8 spots or less).

We get F1 (whichever one the swans didn’t choose), 19 (on trade for Baker), give TB + F3

Swans get F1 + WC F3, give 19 + F2

Hawks get TB + swans F2, give F1 + Carl F1 (plus bank Carl F2 from trading out 14… so end up with 3 x late-ish F2’s).

So let me see if I can get this AFL media thing right:
  • The Eagles are shit for not bending over backward to take an uncontracted player that only nominated West Coast as a preferred destination a week or so ago.
  • Hawthorn are not shit despite wining and dining a contracted player (and club VC) for months to move across the country, getting him to agree weeks ago and virtually pack up to move, say goodbye to his teammates at the B&F etc - and then pulling the rug out from under him?

It’s gotta be Hawthorn’s two future firsts for Barrass and our future second. Anything less and it’s vomit worthy. Even that is a poor return but tolerable.
Then trade them for GC's pick 6 to really screw Richmond over.

That’s gross

Don’t even get an extra pick in this super draft and give our F2…

That could end up being 14 and 17 for TB and 22

Also, we don’t want to be armed with several firsts for Warner, Sydney will ask for them all
Either way if TB goes the majority of what comes in will be going out.

Should be pushing for Hawks F1 and 33 but don’t we get it. Ain’t getting both future 1sts.

The advantage we have right now is the Hawks fans believe they are right there. Imagine walking about post trade period and the only big in is and overpaid Battle.

Perryman missed out on ❌
Smith likely missed out on.❌
TB missed out on❌
Traded out of the ‘super draft’❌

I think the deal will be
Hawks F1 + Blues F1
For
TB and F2.

Issue is which one do we keep out of Hawks or Blues? Who is likely to finish lower?
Flip both to Gold Coast for 13 + 23 and offer Richmond 23

Not our F2, a F2.

They want to play games so can we. Should be able to find a later F2 (from a contender) somewhat cheap. Ours is much more valuable on paper.

2x late F1st’s in a super compromised draft, for a late F2nd and TB is still a very good deal for the Hawks (and nets them 2x extra F2 than our original ask).

No no, don’t you remember?

We are the one’s that ‘pulled the rug out’ from under poor TB when he didn’t get an extra 2 years randomly added to his contract along with more money. Despite being 29, with 3 years on his contract, injury prone and the club being in a rock bottom rebuild.
