I agree they would get a contract somewhere if they were uncontracted and the club could get them for nothing and negotiate a contract with them from scratch (and pay them a lot less than they are getting now).

But i don't think we would get much for them if we tried to trade them. Only clubs in the window would cough up any picks of any value for players in that age bracket and even then only if we agreed to eat a big part of next years salary. No club that considers themselves outside the window would be interested in giving up anything for them in a trade and that is probably 12 of the 18 clubs who know they are not in a flag window.

The other complication would be their attitude and the attitude of their families to moving across the country. The player would have to be enthusiastic about the move to the new club for the club to risk anything to acquire them. If the other club got the sense that they were bitter and resentful about the trade, or that they just wanted another year or two on AFL level wages and were planning to just go through the motions and pick their pay cheque up, or that their families were against the move and they were likely to have problems on the homefront with an unhappy wife and kids etc distracting them then they would not put anything on the table for them. Might pick them up on a one year deal as a free agent or PSD but they would not want to risk draft capital for them.

We're going to eliminate the want to move in this discussion and talk about pure value to avoid complicating the argument that Briztoon made.

And you're right, both would be valued by all clubs differently according to where they are in the window. But I can tell you right here right now Collingwood, Melbourne & Brisbane would snap up Darling (that's 3 of the top 4)as would others like Carlton whilst Collingwood, Brisbane, Geelong, St K, Port, Carlton, Bulldogs and Crows would snap up McGovern in an instant.

This medium has got a horrible habit of undervaluing very good players.

Are you guys not tired of the “oh McGovern was in ripping form for 2 games before he got injured” no one’s saying the injuries are his fault or that he hasn’t been unlucky but the fact is you can not rely on him at all, I don’t see how that’ll get better with age. He has played 40 out of last 71 games ffs

That wasn't the argument. It was about value of said playerright now. I disagreed with his value (as it was pure stupid poppycock) & that was it

And by snap them up - I mean trade for them (& not the type of return some itinerant Brisbane supporter thinks they're worth)

What's your thoughts on value for each if the incredibly unlikely scenario unfolded that either player was open to being traded to try and win another flag?

I don't think North traded JHF because they were worried he would somehow get to Port through the PSD if they didn't. He was still under contract for a start.

Most high value players asking for a trade don't want to screw the club they are at and ruin their relationships there by going to PSD so the club gets nothing. And they don't want to risk of ending up anywhere by having another club draft them first in the PSD. If you enticed a player to nominate to be traded to your club and then turned around and said to them "On second thoughts we don't want to have to actually trade for you, can you just nominate for the PSD instead and if you are there when it is our pick we promise to take you, and if somebody else gets there first then thats your problem" they and their manager would be pretty pissed. If you did that it would be very hard to get other players to nominate you for a trade in the future.

Summary of a number of players that might find a new home next week with Maric seen to be the standout

A name mentioned late as almost an afterthought but had some fans on this board 6 months ago was Jack Cleaver, formerly of East Fremantle but now playing with the Essendon VFL side. A 188cm defender might be of interest if we use a 2nd pick

I think they will take Maric he is clearly number 1 and we need another forward to have cover in case Allen goes down. Darling is heading to the end of his career anyway. Take the best available should be our aim.

We'll probably have a huge turnover in the backline, especially HBFers so cleaver could definitely be useful
Can imagine us without foley, hurn, yeo, rotham in a year or 2 and witherden and cole on thin ice

Simmo covered this weakness in his 6PR interview. Maric is our Myocheck (?) I have never seen Maric. I would be very happy he (Myocheck) is so serviceable.

It's Mihocek. But yeah drafting a Mihocek type would be a great outcome he has been more than useful for Collingwood for a long time. If Maric is as good as Mihocek we have done pretty well.
