It has! But you don’t need to perpetuate it by responding. It’s ok to let it lay.

And you don’t need to perpetuate it by responding to my response telling me not to respond, but you felt the need ti anyway.

The guys 30 years of age.. we want to be getting rid of those blokes not bringing more in

Nothing wrong with signing him for a year or 2 as a stop gap to shoulder the load for a bit if we could get him for nothing. Would rather someone else of course but not many other options. I would go for James Jordan if we could he fits the age profile better and could do the same role I guess. Matt crouch could be serviceable too at 28. Could Luke Dunstan be an option?

Dunstan and Crouch would make Sheed look like Usain Bolt

The views on Gaff here are frankly astounding.

He had a bad game on the weekend and he's been down this season but not as significantly as many are making out.

Most of the time here people are putting him up as being expected to replicate the games of Luke Shuey.

Speed, long kicking and dynamic ball movement were never his one-wood in 268 games.

He was a gut runner whose value was getting an extra player to more contests than the opposition. He was an accumulator who would be the link in kick, mark, kick plays. He was outside the contest. He provided an extra defensive block due to position.

None of the reasons people are giving for their criticism align with his strengths falling away. It's because in his 13th season he is not able to replace Luke Shuey's game style (when Shuey is missing every 2nd week).

Again, this game style was never his one wood.

He's an easy target because he's on the park. I bet he'd be loving to be running rehab laps out of the spotlight like others. Hell, he'd probably get the "wait until Gaff gets back, give him another year" talk like so many others do.

His one wood doesn't fit in with today's game style. Was a good player once, until the AFL started messing around with the rules, but now, his use by date has expired.

…and Mitch Geordiades. Push Oscar Allen to CHF and get him involved in play more after Darling is retired. Marci will do well as a third tall going forward. By splitting number 1 next year, they could turn things around very quickly.

I have no problem with academy matching but why the **** should they get a 20% discount ?

With so many academy players the 20% discount just means they still have decent picks after academy matching rather than getting 1 really good player then get stuck with late 3rd round picks to balance the advantage.

He is playing afl so he is at that grade… not going to be anymore than a c grader though although he was a big F earlier in the year.
Consider getting your eye prescription strengthened, chieftain. I'm currently convinced you're the old fella who used to sit next to me at the end of the Subi era who used to demand they "KICK IT TO BRAUN".

You're firmly in that level of nuffy right now.

Some people just simply can't find it in them to admit when they're wrong, so they begrudgingly raise their rating in an attempt to be demeaning instead of complimentary.

I mean, the bloke will probably get top 3 in BnF but nah, barely C grade.

I wouldn't even really mind if the northern academies could only match bids outside the top 20/ from the second round onward. I do think the traditional football states have an advantage due to having a higher number of players that will request trades home, so allowing the northern teams a bit of priority access to some of their home grown talent is fair enough.

However, it's absolutely ridiculous that teams competing in finals and even grand finals can then also claim a kid that would otherwise go at the very top of the draft. Like Sydney did with Heeney and Mills, it basically circumvents the natural cycle that the draft is supposed to create. The Northern academies are only getting stronger and stronger as well.

You have to remember that there isn’t a single current Eagles player he rates higher than Ben bloody Ronke.

This was always going to happen with the Northern Academies.

2.5 million more people live north of the Barassi Line than south of it.

That's a catchment of 14.5 million people, receiving grassroots funding by the truckload, being funnelled with exclusivity to just four clubs.

To put it another way, each of the clubs in NSW & Qld gets first option on a population that is approximate to that of WA & SA combined.

As the impact of development funding continues to attract and improve talent in the northern states, the competition will become more and more affected, with an increasing proportion of high-end recruitment occurring effectively outside of the draft - which will inevitably, if without any intervention, lead to the foundation of dynasties by the beneficiary clubs of the Northern Academies.

This is an outcome that is entirely expected. It's simple demographics. That it has been allowed to go on for so long with the rules that are in place is the infuriating part.

Get rid of the points discount and make any bid-matching commence with a pick from the same round in the draft.

AFL still isn't the dominant football code in NSW or QLD. League is still the main footy code of the masses, and Union is the footy code in the private schools.

Didn’t a report come out like 2 days ago were it was confirmed more kids in QLD were playing AFL than League?

*Australian Rules.

Aware of that - I live up here (nephew just made the decision to go with League over AFL after Cronulla and the Dolphins both offered him contracts at 16).

Never will quite understand the utter wankiness around Union, private schools and old boys business associations that exists this way, in WA the following is completely different (perhaps because League is non-existent there I guess), anyway, I digress.

With the way the Northern Academies are setup, capturing from such a large pool, the level of participation doesn't need to be akin to the southern states.

Theoretically speaking, participation rates in NSW & Qld could be a third of those in WA & SA, yet still yield a higher total number of participants - and unlike WA & SA they are not truly exposed to the draft - they can be taken to an academy and effectively guaranteed a protected selection years in advance if they're good enough.

It's a massive distortion already and will only continue to grow.

I have 6 players being bid on before 40 and likely 3 compensation picks and maybe, a tight maybe on an end of first round priority pick for North which sets WCE up for one next year in that spot.

However if North get access to pre-list Sanders instead of a compo that lowers the number by 1.

With the picks that get chewed up before our 36 and 38 atm I think those WCE picks stay in roughly that position.

Collard is a talent but i'm not overly fond of his attitude (haven't interviewed him) on field, on the bench and at games. TBH even with his talent if we were to take 2 out of 3 NGA's this year (assuming we keep Baker and Dewar) I would take Livingstone and Hine-Baston instead.

I don't think Livingstone will be a star but think he is an AFL level talent and can be that aggressive hulking FF that brings the ball to ground. He's a good mark and kicks well. Jack Williams continuing to show more than expected may see the club have less interest but it's my position on him.

Hine-Baston whilst an overager is an October 04 kid and is a bit of a late developer. He has a lot of AFL qualities but it's not a flashy position. I think he can make a very good lockdown small defender and his kicking in my mind is a significant upgrade on the players we have on the list that we have used in that specific small lockdown role. If he wasn't an over-ager I think he would be on the top 40 cusp. As he plays for Perth I have met him a few times and have seen him play a fair few times. No fuss is how I would put him but could be a late gem.

Clay Hall is a good player and I thought he would rise in the rankings throughout the champs and whilst he played well his kicking and decision making at the next level up (mind you in a poor WA team) was at a standard lower than I expected. I thought he would be a big riser through to end of late first round or early second but he could now be an option for one of those picks at 36/38 if he has what the club is looking for. The big question is with a few years in the system can he develop further and play the way he has at Colts level at AFL or will he be one of those mids who has an amazing WAFL career but is never quite AFL quality. He sure as s**t has an amazing attitude and can get the ball. I have him more as a winger at AFL level than an inside player. (this is probably due to my mantra now that all players on ground have to be able to win 1vs1 contests, run, carry and compete)

If Barrass is to go I still think it's possible to get Sydney's first and 2 second rounders for him if the club pays a significant part of his contract / does that and or potentially creates an extra second round compo pick for Sydney on Melican. It's my understanding Tom McCartin is fine to continue playing but with not only him suffering a couple of concussions but his brothers career being wiped by them they aren't certain on him as a long term player. That and he's quite undersized as a KPD.
What is the logic and likelihood for North having access to Sanders? Also does he need to agree to it? Can't see why he'd want to go to North tbh

Generally I hate the idea of priority picks, and the least of North's problems has been access to top end talent, so don't see why they should get more

U16 All Australian team is below.

We are so so ****ed. 11 of the 23 are from the QLD/NSW Academies.

Getting ridiculous

This competition is so compromised. Is there any other top level sport in the world like this....

I’d take matching before 40 off Swans and Lions but not the expansion clubs as they have no father - son benefits yet.
But they are getting so much more out of their Academies than any club will ever get out of F/S. Eagles for example have never had a F/S who would've been taken in the first 2 rounds. GCS this year will get three academy players all of which likely are first rounders, with Walter likely worth top 2 and Read top 10
