Surely pick 2 has just as much value as last year?

Why not do the same?

pick 2 for eg. 8 and 12

Because the draft is no where near as strong in that region this year as it was last year.

The top end of this draft (1-6) is really good, after that there’s guys like Sanders (won’t even be available), Read (won’t even be available), Rogers (won’t even be available), Croft (won’t even be available) - the best draftable guys are ones like Wilson, O’Sullivan etc. they aren’t worth splitting 2 for.

McKercher or Curtin are still very good, just a downgrade from Reid.

Conveniently you appear to be taking the worst of the picks 2 or 3 in many cases.

You also forgot 2016 where both Taranto and McCluggage are arguably both better than McGrath.

If you pick the better option it looks significantly different. Just a few of the easy ones
Kreuzer vs Cotchin (pick 2 before Masten)
Scully vs Martin (pick 3 that year)
Patton vs Coniglio (pick 2 that year)
Boyd vs Kelly (pick 2 that year)
Weitering vs Clayton Oliver (Callum Mills was pick 3 to Sydney but in the open draft Oliver was 3)
Rayner vs Brayshaw (Pick 2 that year)
Everyone's missing the point. Maybe 2-3 seasons in the last 20 have had a better result at #2/#3 than #1. Some calls are subjective and others were in hindsight wrong, but at the time were correct.

  • 2016 had a very even top 3 with any legitimate #1 chances. That's super rare though. McGrath perfectly fine as a big game player and better team player overall.
  • Kreuzer should have been the dominant big man in the comp (barring injury) while Cotchin (was the best player ) is a stock standard mid and nothing special as a player.
  • Dusty was a fluke (👃💊) and in another team wouldn't have performed as well in those peak 4 years. Scully was a safer choice and was really good until he snapped his ankle. I still have him as probably 5th best from that draft with hindsight.
  • Patton was clear #1 and barring knees should/would have been a perennial coleman chance.
  • Boyd is probably the #1 in draft class. Too bad his head wasn't up to it.
  • Oliver it was a fluke that he became elite on-baller rather than just average and kudos to melb. I think Weitering was more valuable to lock in for Calrton though.
  • 2017 was a very weak top end. Brayshaw has been better than expected, but is still a plodder. Rayner was the choice though he's been underwhelming so far- still can be a match winner and has a higher ceiling.
Yes pick one does have a high correlation with being a good pick up generally but it doesn't guarantee anything.
The thing is that this year Reid is the safest pick. Has high floor with also the highest ceiling. Based on only junior performances in the last 5 years 2019-2023 there's only Daicos and Rowell I would take before him.

Kreuzer > Cotchin as well.
Happy Excuse Me GIF

God damn it now pick has dropped down 2 places...
How can things get any worse?
Maybe when I wake up I'll I have different feeling but this is the worst feeling I have felt since Matilda's lost the final.

Reid and wce was destiny.

Can't believe for such a powerful club we no longer have a franchise player. Dockers have Brayshaw for **** sakes. We got Oscar but that doesn't fill the stomach

Nth Melb will beat Suns down in Tasmania.
Eagles will still get pick 1.

This was definitely possible before our result today, but I don’t see a world where North don’t tank that game, they’ll pull out their key guys or at least a couple of them.

They also aren’t even good in Tasmania. Suns love beating bad teams too.

I'd love them to but North have not been trying to win for months.

We'll also beat Adelaide.

Oscar is a far better player than vanilla Brayshaw Jesus.

Elijah Hewett will lead us to premiership glory. Brayshaw will never do that.
