A good midfield is important but you can manage with less top end in there like Richmond have for years.
In fairness Richmond's midfield during their three premierships included Cotchin (pick 2), Martin (pick 3), Caddy (pick 7), Prestia (pick 9), Vlastuin (pick 9), Rioli (pick 15), Ellis (pick 15), with Grigg (pick 19), Edwards (pick 26) and Bolton (pick 29) selected in the second round. So that's a lot of players who rotated through their midfield who were considered top end talent pre-draft (2 x top 3 picks, 5 x top 10 picks, 7 x first rounders and 10 x first/second rounders).

Witherden has his dumb moments but saying he doesn't know how to defend is way over the top.
He's a poor one on one defender. For a guy that burns the ball so regularly and offers no dash through traffic he should be a lock down defender.

One of those players who's a spent force when the ball hits the deck.

By who? You'll be lucky to get consensus on the top 15 prospects in this years draft.

You will have players going in the 20's that other clubs wouldn't even draft.

It's touch and go whether he lasts past 40 so we can match a bid. So that puts him at about 40. None of the main outlets have him top 30 in their phantom giraffe. That puts best guess at around 40, give or take. Believe it or not, we are able to make guestimates.

Anyway, the point is, he's a second or 3rd rounder laying out public demands. Needs to pull his head in.

If we wanted a player like a Murphy or Wilson or Windsor we will need to trade up.

19 likely wont get any of them.
There are more versions of these later - you would be paying through the nose to get them in the 10 to 14 range. This draft is long on KPD and running backs

According to rumour, our king blew vape smoke in a Collingwood recruiter's face. No idea if it's true, and if so, if we put him up to it. Would be pretty cool if we did though!

That just unprofessional and rude.

All he had to do is invite them in for tea or coffee. And serve their drinks in 2018 premiership coffee mugs.

On the table just have you laptop open with your favourite screen saver.

See ya!

So we’re just going to do our delistings piecemeal are we? Should make for a riveting few weeks between now and the trade period…

I’d imagine we would be gauging interest if any across the league before making the calls publicly. Not saying that there would be much interest for any of our delistings this year, but these are young blokes losing out on their AFL dreams.. I don’t think there is any rush given the season is still going.

Even a trade for a future 20th round draft pick sees us achieve our list requirements but might see them with a shot elsewhere. Foley was a solid foot soldier, probably unlikely to get picked up until MSD next year if he has a good start to 2024.

These trade and draft "gurus" copy each other's homework.

At this point normally there should be a handful you KNOW are out the door.

No idea why we aren't announcing that XON, West, Clark, Trew etc are all following Foley out the door. I mean Gee whiz. Blind Freddy can see the writing there.

Then you might have 1 or two late sign ons or delistings, depending how certain things play out. SPS, Waterman, Witherden types. That's how it normally is.

Can't say I've ever seen a club drip feed delistings like this before. Quite bizarre.

They must be trying to find every last option for them with another team

Pretty much, but that's all we have. Where do you rate him? To me he looks dangerous but inconsistent. Could be Sonny Walters but could be Jarrod Pickett. Also, apparently 13th ish to 45 ish is pretty flat. he's probably around that 40 mark. That's the best info we have.

Bulldogs have made two separate list announcements in the last week

Other clubs have made announcements on one or two players so far whilst still having players expected to be delisted eventually

It’s not unusual

Plus a number of clubs yet to make any announcements, e.g. Gold Coast, North, Hawthorn, Adelaide.

Alrighty agree to disagree then.

I know a lot of Eagles supporters don't share my opinion on Witherden.

When this season began I thought it was likely to be Witherden’s last at West Coast. Had he not had a contract I’d have delisted him last year

During the course of the year I thought he did pretty well, particularly in the back third when he did enough to get another year. Not sure I’d be giving him more than that though as he has too many lapses to be considered a long term option nor is he best 22 with a fully fit list

Cos we're rudderless

We’re not short on players to delist so I’d like Trew to get another year. Of course hard to know of his attitude but I would have thought he’d be worth more than six games.

I can name flag sides with only 1 key forward, but can't name a flag side that didn't have an elite midfield. I just noticed below you said Richmond manage with less top end. You're having a laaaarf.
Technically every midfield has 3-4 guys going at 25+ disposals or whatever. Doesn't mean they are better than the next. Richmonds midfield was actually pretty sucky. I don't think anyone here would want to draft in 2023 and play in a first choice team any of :
Lambert, Mackintosh, Townsend, Graham, Ellis, Edwards, Prestia, Caddy, Baker.
Cotchin was a fine leader but not at all damaging as a midfielder. Then Dusty ofc who lined up at FF more often than not. Was more than the sum of their parts.

I'm not saying don't try and find another KPF. I'm saying find one through other means than trading Harley. Find one in the top 5 or 10 over the next few seasons.
There's plenty to choose from. I'd want either a top 5 pick (if warranted) or a bunch of rookie options to dig through.
