There's merit to letting Shanahan play forward this year. If Oscar leaves at seasons end, Archer and Jobe will have spent a year working together at WAFL level. If Oscar stays, we can then make a decision as to who goes to defense, which could also be Oscar himself.

The only thing we can't afford is to have all of Allen, Waterman, J.Williams, A.Reid and Shanahan playing forward once Allen's contract is renewed. Until then, we can just let Reid and Shanahan play.

Also merit in playing Shanahan in defense.

He gets early exposure at the top level

He gets exposure to AFL forwards and leading patterns that he can add to his game.

He can always be used to swing forward aka Hunter.

Much better for their development than waiting for an injury and playing WAFL. Especially when it looks like we will be short in defense.

O Allan also played in defence to aid his development.

Exactly. He wasn’t ready, surely I don’t need to spell out that there were hardened match fit players that WERE able to play in the midfield meaning Cousins didn’t.

You’re now taking about a midfielder that spent the early part of his career mostly on a flank building up the engine and body transitioning more and more game time to the midfield, not a high ceiling KPF that would spend all his development years in that AFL as a KPD. Chalk and cheese.

Who said Shanahan should spent ALL his development years in defense?

No-one. Your the first to say that.

Making up extreme assumptions to attack that no-one has actually suggested is how people with a poor argument attempt to recover.

No negatives if a Shanhan plays two years in defense to gain exposure and experience at the top level. Especially when they can be swung forward in games.

Shanahan has been described as a tall utility who can and has played key position at both ends of the ground.

BTW McGovern started as a forward. ;)

I didn’t mention any extremes or make assumptions what a ridiculous comment. Having watched a lot of him at underage level and live at the champs he’s far too good a KPF to not be playing and developing there. The only issue is the state of the Beagles and how supply looks for him in the forward line.

Oscar Allen played mainly back in his debut year and was in line to replace McGovern in the GF side if Gov failed his fitness test

Just don’t put Shanahan or Reid in the ruck, they can play in defence though

How the f is Cousins’ career relevant to the development of two untested KPPs? lol

Because someone mentioned we should develop players in the positions they were drafted as.

When that is rarely the case, especially mids and KP players. Those kids develop on flanks.

Same applies with talls and which end of the ground they play.

It's better for development to get early games and exposure into players even if not playing in their preferred position they were playing before being drafted.

Cousins was developed in a forward pocket year 1. Not on ball. So another example.

You said you dont agree with Shanahan spending ALL his development years as a defender.

Hence why it was highlighted.

Who has suggested that? He spends ALL his development years in defense?

No-one. Why? Because it's taking an assumption to an extreme which extremely unlikely to happen.

It's like me saying Harley spending ALL his development years playing only forward. That just isn't happening and to infer others are saying that is disengenuous.

The kid is 18. We've also got Edwards, Bazzo and Jamieson to cover that position. We're also likely to add Sandy Brock to the list. There is no rush for Shanahan to play defense or at AFL level.

Glad we look to be taking a KPD.
If Van es is over his injuries he would be a good get imo

Between Brock/Van es, Edwards and Bazzo we probably have enough to survive a couple of years while we find a better long term solution

Hopefully that means the club hasn't given on Barnett being a ruckman yet too, and sees something there.

Bringing in another key defender as a train on.

I like this, obviously WC are wanting more mature KDEF options, being 20.
He had almost 2 years of injuries, but was highly regarded as a junior, intercepting machine with strength and positioning?

100%

SNAPSHOT: “James Van Es is an intercept marking machine for the GWV Rebels, with his positioning and strength one-on-one among his best traits”

James Van Es is a strong key defender with upside for the future given his remarkable athleticism that could still be further implemented on-field to add extra weapons to his game. The Greater Western Victoria (GWV) Rebels defender is a natural leader who was impressive for St Patrick’s College in the Herald Sun Shield Grand Final loss to Whitefriars College.

Van Es is a reliable backman who earned Vic Country representative honours, often being a critical interceptor, but also one who could play on an opponent and nullify them. Being a strong defender who had athletic traits makes him a player who has potential if a club can give him a chance. He averaged 11.3 disposals, 4.0 marks and 3.3 rebound 50s at the AFL Under 18 Championships, and was able to have a mix of defending one-on-one and finding space to step into.

In a draft crop where there are strong defenders, and then athletic defenders, Van Es is a player who could be a mix of both, but he could further showcase his athleticism – mainly his 2.91-second 20m sprint – on-field. Overall though his year has been a successful one for his draft stocks, with the 197cm and 99kg prospect developing strongly in a GWV Rebels side that produced the best bigman in the draft crop in Aaron Cadman.

He can defend 1 on 1, and he's quick. Sub 3 sec 20m is huge.
Hed be a great fit attribute-wise

Injuries and staying fit seemed to be the main reason he didn't make it at the Saints

Has he kept his athleticism post injury is the question

Hopefully the club did it's due diligence

Inviting him to train with the club for a few weeks would be part of that due diligence

He hasn’t been signed on and there’s no guarantee he will be at this stage

Was taken at pick 31 in the 2022 draft, two picks after we took Burgiel who’s now signed on to play for East Perth after being delisted without playing a game

By due diligence i meant hopefully they have done some testing e.g. 20m sprint etc..
