Rioli third number.

Wait until you realise Port don’t hold their captains original number when he takes the #

They do now, ever since Tredrea gave up the captaincy and booted Danyle Pearce out of the #16.

Some silly takes here.

Players come and go, even the good ones.

The players themselves are probably more worried about who they have a locker next to in the rooms.

The jumper numbers are a nice link to the past but this isn’t the NBA and nobody in a league full of token gestures is ‘retiring’ numbers, outside of perhaps an untimely death, even then it’s unlikely to be ‘forever’.

3 should be saved for Chad or Fred “Freddy the Jet” Rodriguez, if either lands at the club. Not a fan of Baker & Graham getting numbers like 3 & 17. Some will say it’s just a number & not that deep, but that’s absolute trash & you all know it.

16: Baker
17: Shanahan
23: Maric
26: Gross
27 J.Williams
31: Edwards
34: Graham
35: Grego
37: Sellwood or Denver Grainger-Barrass
38: Champion
41: Davis
42: Owies

I have a feeling that the number 3 would have been among Bakers list of trade demands though.
1 and 4 will be available next year 😃

On that note, John McCarthy's #35 has just been unretired, with the blessing of his family.

I'd rather we don't go down the route of the NBA where literally a dozen numbers or more cannot be used.

I wouldn't mind if just one or two numbers were retired. Had the club permanently retired Mainy's #3 in 2007 that would've been a nice gesture but not retiring it wasn't disrespectful or anything.

The Wildcats have been around 5 years more than the Eagles and already have 8 retired jerseys with 7 club legends plus Scott Fenton who tragically died in a car accident in the 80s. They will retire Cotton's 11 and possibly Wagstaff's 24 as the games record holder and 6 x champion. So that would be 10 which is already a lot even for a sport where you have an extended roster of 15.

The Eagles have a current squad of 43. If you retire 5 or 10 numbers for great players (where do you draw the line?) then you are already going to be into the 50s each year. Wouldn't be practical and eventually clubs would be into triple digits.

They actually did retire it for three years.
