Apparently Will Ashcroft has a younger brother who is dominating the under 16s. It will be interesting to see if there's any blowback if/when Brisbane are allowed to draft two top picks in three years due to father/son.
Played NAB League with his brother a couple of weeks ago at 15 (he’s a December dob if I remember right).

You can see a little snippet of him at the 1:50 mark of this video.

You believe the (big) Vic clubs would put constraints on one aspect that they benefit from more than the other states?

FYI, their sister is also starting to gain attention as an AFLW prospect, and will qualify as a father daughter, so we’ll probably have all 3 at the club.

Our AFLW team will probably benefit more from our 2001-2003 premiership team because there are a lot of daughters.

Akermanis moved back to Brisbane last year with his daughter, as she’s a highly regarded talent.

But we need Brownie to talk sense in to his daughter because she’s a Carlton nuffie.

Darling would only trade if we got a good offer

McGovern is a 15 game a season player at best, we should definitely look at trading him.

We have Barrass and we keep developing H Edwards and Bazzo and even Callum Jamieson who has played down back at wafl level
Yep
Wanting to push out loyal servants, not to mention premiership hero's of the club will do wonders for our culture .

FMD.

I can see Will Ashcroft getting the Jack Watts treatment when he comes into the AFL.

Not his fault - just the way it often is in professional sport. Seasoned pros don't usually like pretty boy rookies with huge media wraps. Add to that his famous surname and that's a big target on his back from day one.

I do, however, think he'll be better equipped to handle it than Watts was. Everything I've seen and read suggests he's a top tier professional and the Lions as an organisation are obviously in far better shape than the demons of that era were.

Watts had a decent second half to his career but he was really set up to fail through the first half.

I was at Watts' first game. The beat up for his debut during the game was insane. Talk about pressure.

This is the type of posting that will bring DS back from the shadow realm

SEN WA (aka Hackdorn) reporting Hurn thinking about going on in 2023.

Now, whether that is the right long term decision, or not, is ‘interesting’ - he’s having a much better season than most and who is playing better (well enough) to replace?

D'Ambrosio would have been a nice addition, but still wouldn't have fixed our main issue of lack of mids coming through.

Culley's ceiling is a lot higher, and we've already seen some samples of that in the WAFL.

Yeah mate I'm just stirring.

He’s been far from our worst and has been durable but…..

One of the reasons Yeo, and to a lesser extent Jones, had such an impact playing in defence is that it gave us some leg speed coming out of the back half that had been lacking

Hurn isn’t getting any quicker and will only be slower next year. His kicking also doesn’t have the same penetration it used to

He’s been fantastic for the club over a long career but while it should be acknowledged he’s still best 22, long term we’re better placed if he retires

If he stays, then someone else has to go. Either a fellow veteran like Redden or one of those fringe players hoping for another chance

Hagdorn is a knob.
"Causing angst".

Bunga seems the type of guy who would do whatever the club wants, with a minimum of fuss.

FWIW, I hope he goes on.
Still our best flanker and our best kick.

I'd delist guys like Nelson and Wirtherden before letting Hurn go.

That's the problem though. Our defence has been ordinary all year. Bunger is still the guy (non KPF) that provides clarity coming out of defence. So he's good enough to play and he make us better (we're really shit without him). But we need to build a defence without him. Tough call (because he's still good enough), but he has to be asked to retire.

Fair point as those two haven’t been great and I think at least one of them should be let go regardless of what happens with Hurn

Xavier Ellis mentioned Hurn on one of the West's podcasts recently.

Essentially, you have to make the call on 300 gamers because their body doesn't really ever let them down, that's how they reach 300. But also that Hurn never takes risk with his kicks any more.

So not quick, kicking is short and not overly attacking, taking a spot from someone else in terms of not being totally accountable. Like if not this year, then Hurn, Shuey, Redden all go next year maybe?

I’m ok with Hurn playing on as he sets the bar even as a 50 year old.

Now I’ll also be telling the Witherdens, Rotham, Coles, etc… this is the minimum standard set by a club legend who is on his last years. If you can’t beat it when you’re in your prime, maybe it’s you that needs to go.

Not sure I agree with your sentiment hoping he plays again next year - but the rest is spot on.

He waited until the club had everything sorted out before he even committed to playing this season (he signed on very late) - I'm sure he is happy to do the same again.

Having Hurn out there is so valuable for guys like Bazzo because he’s basically a backline coach out on the field.

If he gets through the rest of this season relatively unscathed I wouldn’t be against giving him one more year. He’s probably one calf injury away from the end though.

Hurn's never relied on leg speed in his game, so i don't think that's an issue if he played on. If WCE manage him and he plays 15-17 games in the back pocket, let the guys with run play half back (Yeo, Jones) i think it will be worth it. He's still a better player than, Foley, Nelson, Rotham, Witherden and probably will be next year still.
