Link to contract status of all players -

The caretaker coach calling the list “good” and the president calling it “outstanding” is surely going to hamper their PP claims.
Tbf theyve got some real talent, just have to put it all together, starts with off the field

tl;dr

1) Norf - Jed Busslinger
2) Brisbane - Will Ashcroft
3) Eagles - Elijah Hewett
4) Essendon - Sheezel
5) Crows - Wardlaw
....
8) Power - Phillipou
Surely this was done straight after WA played Vic Metro, as there is no way we'll go Hewett after the last few performances.

Ignore how it actually went down, but we totally should have done the same thing.
The biggest problem was thinking he could replace Hodge and others with Mitchell and Troy Wingard and O'Meara. They're varying degrees of good players, but none of them are "drag your team across the line" types.

I see so many posts talking about how we are not ruthless enough and we should trade out half the playing list and retire the rest but there is one thing people aren’t taking into account.

Loyalty.

It’s easy to talk about shopping players every chance we get but some seem to forget that we are one of the most isolated football teams in the country in regards to where the majority of games take place. The mob down the road have had issues through their whole existence with player retention, where as we seem to have done very well, particularly in comparison to other interstate clubs.

Success plays a huge part of that I concede however our loyalty to our football group, not shipping them around every off season and burning relationships in the process is a huge factor.

We can’t have it both ways, we want to be as ruthless as Hawrhorn? sure, go right ahead but don’t expect the same level of loyalty from a playing group when it comes to contract re-signings with interstate players. It’s easier for a Victorian club to re stock it’s ranks than it is for us.

There’s a reason we do things differently and there’s also a reason why it works.

We don’t publicly shop players, we very rarely force legends to retire and we certainly don’t pack their bags and ship them off to another club for a meaningless pick. We have the hard conversation and treat them with the respect they deserve for being long term servants of the club.

Whether that’s Dean Cox, Matt Priddis or Andrew Gaff.

Yes we have an old playing list, yes we need to prioritise youth but as so many have said before we are doing that, the club is preaching it but we need some separation between losing all our senior experience all at once and filling our ranks with youth that simply aren’t cut out for it.

The club will stagnate the retirements over the next 3 years as to give us ample time to bring in young talent worthy of taking their places.

We already do look like a second grade team with all those senior players

Another goose comment.

Have we had all our senior players fit and available this season? No we havent.

And when we have had atleast some decent senior player numbers available we have been able to make a contest and not get flogged.

If the club suggested to Shuey that, if he wanted to move into coaching, it might be a good idea to be a playing coach for a year or two at Hawthorn under Mitchell like he did here, I’d be ok with that.

As long as it was put as a suggestion, not an ultimatum.

Should we trade Rioli ? It's been mentioned around the places. Preferably Richmond where he has family ties or to Bomberland to replace Tippa. We could get a early 20s pick for him and maybe an upgrade on a later pick. For us I don't know if he will be playing afl for more than 3-4 years anyway.

Big call yes but we really need as many picks under 30 as we can get.

Halfway through the season after our 7th or 8th loss by 50+ points I was ready to retire everyone and start fresh.
After seeing Hurn play well, Shuey find some form and continuity, Darling hit the scoreboard and Nic Nat provide a spark. I can see some hope for 2023. Not finals hope but hope that we can be competitive in more games. Which is all I want to see at the moment. Redden is the one I would retire but has triggered an extension and Gaff to be traded if possible.

JK and Shep retire
Naish, Dixon, Strandica, Joyce delisted as SSP
3 of Trew, Witherden, West, Winder, Nelson
Gaff traded
Plenty of spots for ND and PSD

Delsit medical and S&C staff

Im happy if Shuey and Hurn go around again next year. Think Shuey needs to find a spot on the HFF and Hurn/Redden to be pushed out of the team by the end of the year.

Hoping we can get Warlord in the draft but would also be happy with Hewitt or Phillipou.

Possible
Cole, Barass, Bhazzo
Hurn, Gov, Yeo
Sheed, Chesser, Hough
Nic Nat, Kelly, Culley
Shuy, Darling, Cripps
Ryan, Allen, Rioli
Int: Pick 2, Duggan, O'Neill, 2nd Ruck/Fwd (Williams or trade in)

Means no spot for Rotham, Petrol, Jones, Clark, Waterman, Edwards, Foley, SPS or Langdon who all provide depth and could push into the 22
Jilliams, Jamieson to stash and develop in the WAFL.

Maybe some sort of mature age player priority access? Did GC have something similar?
GC got main draft picks 1 and 20 in year 1, pick 11 in year 2 and pick 20 in year 3 as assistance.
They also got...
  • Darwin was added to its Academy zone
  • The ability to be able to pre-list Academy players.
  • An expanded Category A rookie list of up to ten players, with the club having a maximum roster of 53 players
  • access to 3 second tier players
The Suns got Chris Burgess from West Adelaide, Sam Collins and Josh Corbett from Werribee

Carlton got mature age priority access...

These priority picks came in the form of being able to recruit uncontracted players from second-tier competitions and prelist them before the draft, with Carlton able to sign two players and the Suns given three.

The clubs were given the choice to keep or trade these players, which Carlton went to the draft with, trading Sturt’s Shane McAdam as part of the deal that landed Mitch McGovern and sending Nathan Kreuger from South Adelaide to Geelong for a pick that helped get Will Setterfield.

Edit - just to clarify, the mature picks were in 2018, the draft picks and other GC concessions were in 2019, then draft picks in 2020 and 2021.

Very good - thank you.

If North get some special allowances I'd hope it'd be mature age access only.

Loyalty is part of the reason we are stuck in rut we have been.

Loyalty to the 2018 crew who can play like garbage week after week.
Loyalty to the 2018 side who get games no matter how they perform or phoned in performances over the past few years.
Loyalty to blokes like Nicoski,Gepp, Webster , the piemam ,the S and C staff who hang around like bad smells without seemingly offering much.
Loyalty to Nisbett who repays it by hiring family, friends and the jobs for the boys crew.
Loyalty to list cloggers like nelson, waterman, mcinnes, rotham who hang on and on to spots when they should have been moved on earlier.
Loyalty to the coach who gets an under the counter contract extension with no concrete announcement.
Loyalty to a hopeless media team who pump out garbage most weeks.

Yea loyalty is overrated .

That's a very pessimistic outlook you have Goroyals. It's so unlike you.

Starting out this beat poetry with two references to the 2018 side seems counterproductive.

If we'd had the kind of exodus during the 2010s that Adelaide had, we never win 2018, and if Adelaide hadn't had players like Davis, Keath, Lever, Dangerfield, Crouch, Tippett, Cameron, McGovern, Lyons, Bock and Gunston walk out, they would have been much much better off.

Our teams ability to keep players when you compare it to Adelaide, Freo, GWS, Brisbane or any non Vic side has been a huge strength

If however McGovern is fit, Yeo is fit, and playing off half back, then Hurn won't need to play much. Would much rather we dumped Witho and Nelson though and kept Hurn for the backup.
Delisting Nelson and Witherden should be done regardless of what happens with hurn .

Nelson i don't know how we kept him on so long
Witherden can't defend for shit which is a poor quality to have when your a defender .

Loyalty gets you McInnes who clogs your list for 8 years and plays 1 game.
