Good spot there.

People look at things the way they want...

In this case what i see is a player whose father died suddenly, who went up north straight after the death and instead of staying up there until after the funeral - which would have been totally understandable - chose to come back to Perth and play two games in the blue and gold before then returning home for the funeral. I may be naive, but to me that suggests something about Willie's commitment to the club.

Nek minute he’s traded to Richmond to be with family..

Exactly. If we land Dev Robertson and we have added Culley that is two young inside mids.

Does this affect who we pick if we retain pick 2?

Does it affect our pick splitting options?

Our pick 20 will also have some solid inside mids around that mark. D'Aloia.

Do we go Busslinger? People will say " but we have Barrass" we don't need him. Barrass is 26. Will be 30 when we contend for a flag. Someone else also said Bazzo played forward as a junior.

Briztoon seems all knowing on what Gold Coast wants and they will use pick 4/5 being the Crows pick so have no need to trade down. Well North seem pretty keen so that thought could go nowhere. I would go to them and say we will draft him at 2 if we don't get a better offer. Another club just may want to get ahead of the Suns to do just that s well.

Time to start playing hard ball and getting the best possible result we can from this sh!tty ladder position as history shows we don't stay down for long and we do not get multiple top 3 picks years in a row.
As (not) GC’s list manager, I’d call your bluff.

Beat Freo and/or Geelong (as unlikely as that is) or bend over for pick one?

I want to win both games and strut into the draft with pick two having *ed up Freo's top 4 chances, and finally ended the Geelong hoodoo.
I dont think we need to bend over......They will just take it......

Much rather jag a win, especially over Freo. Even an all time upset at our bogey ground would be glorious.

I'd also like to win lotto next week

Not at the Asterix level but we should look at trading for Essendon's pick 23.

Alwin Davey expected to go late 1st and so that pick gets gobbled up.

I feel wewill end up with some extra picks. A 29 for Rioli. A 3rd or 4th for Jackson (ufa).

A future 3rd and this years 3rd or 4th? This years 3rd and a 4th we somehow trade in.

So a slightly different flavour to take to the draft

Headlines known to the public:
  1. West Coast have fallen off the cliff - it came fast and will likely be at the bottom of the table for a couple of years
  2. Lions have 2 father son picks this year and another in 2 years meaning they need points this year
  3. Suns have a great load of good picks and high number of points this year with the prospect of losing Rankin and getting pick 4
  4. Suns have been keen on Hollands to unite with brother and he is likely to be in the 12 to 18 range.
Brisbane currently have 2,182 points as they hold the following picks
14, 32, 43 and 68
Let me assume they get pick 19 compo for losing McStay and pick 38 for losing Robertson to Eagles
New Lions points equals 3,595
Ashcroft likely to go 1 and Fletcher say 20 meaning they would need 3,130 points. They are covered.

Suns as it stands have 4,101 points and if they lose Rankin and get 4, they have 6,135 points.
Losing Rankin they have picks 4, 8, 26, 31, 35, 44, 53, 67 and 71
They would dearly like to shift 3,000 plus points to 2023

West Coast to sell off their first round pick next year to the Suns. This will probably be in the top 4 for pick 4 this year so should bring in some 2,500 points. In return we get picks 4 (Rankin deal with the Crows), 14 (Suns do a trade with the Lions) and pick 44
In return we give over pick 25 and next years first

We then go to the draft with 2, 4, 14 20 and 44 plus Robertson.
2 = Wardlaw or Phillipou or Sheezel (classiest midfielder)
4 = Busslinger or Cadman (KPP)
14 = Szybkowski or MacKenzie or George or Hewett (inside or balanced midfielder)
20 = Barnett or Hustwaite or Hotton or Gibney (options)
44 = Jones or Broadbent or best available (options)

Yes I know we miss out 2023 but we get three 1st rounders this year and at 20 a very early second

Now if we hold pick 1, then we have an even stronger hand to work with Lions on to avoid the bid at 1 for Ashcroft.

Suns happy with banking very high points for 2023. They also can take Hollands at 8 and do something with some slightly later picks.
Sounds really good written out like that. Worth the risk if CG came asking and would certainly fast track the rebuild with a bunch of players coming through together.
Only concern would be if we are developing young players next season and we finish last. Then there's an out an out star at number 1. Hopefully with some players back we should be more competitive next year and finish higher then 4th last but it could go the other way with a mix of aging players and rookies.

That great to hear, it's not all roses at the Lions. Elite father sons dropping from the sky and academy kids popping up everywhere with generous bidding discounts that others don't have. ;)

He could be steak knives in a trade for Dunkley. Essendon are looking for an inside mid too. But at 30 and slowing down that may not be realistic.
Have I mentioned we’ll be signing Darryl White jr as a cat b rookie, as he’s coming over from basketball.

Things aren’t all that roses at the Lions.

Another team would be stupid to trade for Lyons. We’d have try and give him away.

Fave player of all time...if the kids anything like his old man Brissy will become my 2nd team again

Agree - but 4, 14 and 44 values it as our future first as pick 1 with a 557 point (or nearly 20%) premium.

There are stars every year There is also a chance that Simmo's game plan is finally launched. Gov, Shuey, Yeo, Sheed, Oscar, etc etc get on the park and we finish mid table.

Are we too timid at the draft/trade table to do something so outlandish?
You have to find other clubs who want to do these deals. I doubt our club will trade away next year's first given it's tipped to be a strong draft. Trading into next year's first round would be a better option, but as I said - it takes two to tango and I think it's rare there are two.

If the other of the tangoing 2 is Gold Coast then they're basically like a tipsy divorcee bridesmaid when it comes to trading though.

So for anyone reluctant to trade away a future first, I ask you what is your premium? Not a stupid deal that no club would consider. I thought 4, 14 and 44 was pretty decent as it values us at pick 1 plus pick 34.

If 2023 is that strong, we will have a great pick at our second plus 2 additional great picks this year, one at the pointy end and one mid to late teens (along with 2).

It will be interesting what happens. This is our first pointy pick for a long time so I don't imagine we'll cough it up for anything that is massively in our favour. I think the club will pick their man (and it will be Warlord or Phillipou or someone else who appear at that top end) and the only reason they won't go through with it is a godfather offer. Because of injuries and lack of KPF options, I don't see anyone who is an absolute must sell the farm to get.

Because we’re almost a certainty to be bottom 3 next year, unless we’re getting a top 6 pick in return for that future 1st, it’s not a worthwhile risk and I like next years class a lot more, you have to be patient during a rebuild, we’re not going to fix everything in one off season, trading future 1sts when you’re in our position is not a worthwhile risk unless a really favourable deal comes along, which I doubt it will.

For me the only thing that really matters is finding top end talent. There's way more of that talent at the very top end. I'm liking Warlord and Phillipou. I would say Warlord will be gone and Phillipou a maybe. Pick 14 - not feeling it. I don't like a chances of finding that absolute elite player. And pick 44 - if you go and count up all the 3rd round picks from the last 20 years and then counted the B grader and above, I reckon you'd be lucky to get 10%.

14 for me is a low percentage to find a generational player. Pick 2 this year and maybe top 5 next year is a way better chance.

Yeah I quite like the idea. It would definetely give us something to be excited by next year and help motivate to finish as high as possible. Worked out pretty good last time we did something like that with GC.
Would have the added bonus for GC that if we do finish last and they get #1 pick then they can still draft the best kid in the country before a bid comes on their academy selections.

Could be worth a gamble

Teams will think we will be bottom next season.

If Simmo reckons he can a few more wins next year with less COVID and some troops back we could get another early pick this year and come out laughing....

A few big ifs though

Agree - you start trading future firsts when you are on the early part of rising up. I think we haven't bottomed out yet.
