Anyone know if the AFL are up for compo in these concussion delisting/retirement scenarios?

Venables would have a career to continue on with if not for his workplace injury.

Fair enough the Eagles can't continue to have someone on their list to perform. But I wonder what (if any) the AFL offer support to players.

I guess despite there's always the real world with every other job still available to them, just not football.

Honestly gutted about Venners. Was so happy when the club recruited a high ceiling type of player rather than the generic vanilla picks we saw for so many years. Showed genuine promise in both the WAFL and AFL and has a premiership medal to show for his efforts.

Thanks Dan
He wasn't performing to the level of a high draft pick if we're being honest.

For what it's worth, I think Venables would be/is a good role player. A forward who pressures the opposition and is dangerous with ball in hand.

Bro so much conflicting news about him

Sure that was an option considered no doubt.

However you can only move two players from the senior list to the rookie list and not risk losing them in the draft. I would suggest that we will likely do that with Willie as there would be a risk that another club would swoop on Rioli if he was in the draft.

If we can't put them both on as Cat B's then Willie gets moved like Hutchings and Venables will get picked up as a rookie as a SPP pick up.

In both ways we retain the players and support them without the risk of another club poaching them. It would be surprising if another club rookied Venables simply due to his injury and how the Eagles are trying to support him.

Wish Venners the best and hope he makes it back?
Not surprising really...
Gosh, Gee, footy's a ruthless business!
But club doing what they can to support him.
Maybe some good news with Rioli...(hmm)

Highlights are often misleading.

I think he's a handy player and we miss what he brings.

I don't understand how it is controversial to say he's been a little disappointing for a guy taken at 13.
I agree,
Youd hope if he was fit thered be plenty of improvement but he wasn't setting the house on fire was he.
Not surprising that the afl didnt allow us to move him to the cat b list or wherever we wanted to stash him.players have career ending injuries all the time.sad for him but we cant have venebles and willie doing SWA on our list. Willie should definitely be the priority

That’s a shame but it was always going to be a long shot for him to play again I think. Wasn’t holding my breath.

Re. His progress - right up until his injury his development was being questioned. He was pretty average all up - not a break out performer but the kind of guy a good team can carry while he finds his feet.
