Majority of Essendon supporters are not wealthy middle class. They are the minority, Essendon is a small surburb.

Essendon supporters dominate the lower classes of the outer western and northern suburbs such as Caroline Springs, Keilor, Avondale Heights, Greenvale, Graigieburn.

If only 1 in 20 bulldog members knows a supporter who has switched like I do and a few others, then that's close to 2,000.

Make no mistake, Essendon supporters dominate our heartland. We need all the supporters we can get if we plan to complete with the big boys, I'm sure the club would agree.

So if you know a Dons supporter, give then a shove, get them on board.
I am aware of that, hence why I referred to them as our "neighbours"

The club itself was built from middle-class types however and they were able to buy premierships and stuff way back then. Our neighbours decided to follow them as they were the easier alternative to the Dogs as that western suburbs team to support.

Please use your Kim Jong powers and ensure we get no Essendon supporters. Essendope can keep their pet memberships.

Use your united nation skills if need.

Thanks bro

Anything for you.

Tried with my boss yesterday. Wore my dogs hoodie in for a bit and said if you jump on board I'll get you one. He said no, reckons us and St. Kilda won't ever win a flag. Said at least we've won a final in the last 10 years and left.

Even if it's correct I doubt this is the real reason for them being a powerfully supported club.

Essendon were the first ever VFL premiers and had won 5 flags by 1912 before the real growth of the middle class in Australia. Although they had a couple of droughts (most noticeably 1925-1941 inclusive and now 2001-present) they've won flags fairly consistently. The only decades they haven't won one were the 1930s and the 1970s. They have never gone more than 17 years without a flag, so every kid growing up in their area or in an Essendon family could see his or her faith in the club vindicated during his childhood. Not so with us - just one VFL/AFL flag in 91 years. And we've NEVER been minor premiers in the VFL/AFL.

I reckon there would have been plenty of working class types in the Essendon area as well, just as there were in Collingwood and Richmond. Having working class supporters didn't seem to stop any of them becoming powerhouse clubs. As you say we were the harder team to support because of our lack of flags.

Tangible success is always the key. I think I read on this board that we had one of the biggest VFL memberships at one point in the 1950s. The period 1963-1989 was where we lost our way and our chance to be up there with the biggest clubs. (My wasted youth!)

One of our staff is a dyed in the wool Essendon Supporter and her family have a fairly high level of membership however she hates what Hird has done to her favourite club. I presented her with a Doggies scarf as a bit of a joke however this matriarch of the family has now ditched Essendon, become a doggies member and told the grand children to think about moving as well! I hope you make her family very welcome.

A lot of Essendon members are unhappy and it is up to all of us to drag one or two family members, friends and colleagues over whilst we can, leaving the Hirdashians to their own inner sanctum.

Jeez, if all it takes is one premiership in 91 years & a scarf then why haven't more us signed on?? AMIRITE GUYS?? :)

Seriously though if you're a real club supporter, and you guys should know it what with the amount of hell you went through just to keep your club going, you stick through it all, through the good times and especially the bad.

It can't get much worse for us let me tell you so when I hear that people are jumping off it makes me sad for their character and for whatever club they choose to support, because at the end of the day they won't be there for you when you need it either.

With the debt we have, we aren't in a position to turn down membership money.

Ironic that you query the character of the long term Victorian health professional I mentioned when you should be looking at the alleged "health professionals" your team has utilised including Dr Dank , Dr Ageless and Dr Do Little

My feeling is that around 90-95% Essendon fans will remain faithful, 4-8% will walk away from football and around 2% will change allegiances in adults. In children from 5-10 I see a huge backlash and this will affect you for another 50 years. Essendon is a strong club, it will bounce back but it will never have the same lustre. We, as a club, need to harness that.

Well it's only ironic if you defend those types of people. I don't, so not ironic at all.

But I will always question the character of a turncoat.
