I probably like what Cripps is doing for Carlton only because he will most likely remain a blue for life.

As a footballer - easily Judd. No comparison really.

Judd could do it all - kick both sides, good marking hands, good agility, burst out of packs, high footy IQ.

Cripps is more of a bull - an in and under player that is smart how he uses his body/strength to advantage to win in scrimmages and is hard to tackle when running with ball in hand.

Cripps is also a good mark - strong hands but kicking is one of his weaker points. Absolutely no left foot
From memory Judd really only had one skill weakness (besides some scrubber kicks when running flat chat, made worse by groin injuries) and that was his non preferred handballs.

I’m surprised to read this comment, Reg. I’m not sure your longevity with watching the game? I would well and truly have Sticks, SOS, and Diesel ahead of him.

I guess my problem with ranking Judd is that I never saw him as a Carlton man, was never impressed with what I saw of him (or his wife) in the media, felt he was a poor captain, and felt the Carlton version was vastly inferior to the West Coast version.

So yes… he was a champion player. But I think there is a fair bit more to a career.

Put it this way. If we could draft an 18 year old Cripps or an 18 year old Judd, I would choose Cripps every single time.

Yeah to contexualise it, I'm "only" 32. My first memory of Carlton players starts around late 90s/ 00s... I certainly respect and appeciate that there's probably been greater players to pull on the navy blue before Judd, but from around the time I started seriously going to the footy, we've sucked. So Juddy was something and someone like I'd never seen before. You knew he was always going to play a great game and he made a mediocre list look OK. Both he and Fev gave some enjoyment through some very dark times. It's probably because of that, that I look at Judd through Rose coloured glasses, however, still, he's the greatest player I've seen.

Without Judd, we would have struggled with professionalism for a few more years. he dragged us out of our arrogance. But we still were a very hot and cold team. We relied on him to shoulder a huge burden, which he courageously did. We had a smattering of stars and some willing soldiers. Just not enough class IMO. Without Judd we would barely have made finals if at all.

Cripps inherited a decidedly better hand. There was far more class on our list when he became captain, and solid gap fill recruiting since by the master Nick Austin has improved our list year over year. Now, IMO which is more than biased, I feel we have a multi premiership list. if that eventuates, then the honors will go to Cripps -it has to.
But the rebuild of our culture started under Judd, it hasnt been smooth sailing, but we have eventually got there.

Both are very important.

Cripps will go down as an absolute great of Carlton.
Judd was an exceptional footballer whose best was at the Eagles but his contribution at Carlton still significant.
For top end talent Judd was the better player. For legacy at Carlton, Cripps wins, and he still has time to add to his story.

I’m surprised at the view that Cripps inherited a far better hand than Judd.

When Judd arrived he had good players in their prime - Fevola, Waite, Scotland, Houlihan, Jamison, Betts, Yarran. There were two number one draft picks - Murphy and Gibbs - with full seasons of football under their belts, and Kreuzer was about to join them.

By the time Cripps arrived, the list was full of players on the decline (most of the above). We then saw SOS arrive, and the decision to gut the list of remaining quality (Henderson and Tuohy) in order to bring in draft picks. With GWS picking the eyes out of some of those drafts, we went bargain basement shopping for players who had seasoned bodies, but were often journeymen for a reason. The Plowman, Sumner, Phillips, and Lamb trade stands out as an example.

2015 was time to hit the draft, but the overall state of the list in terms of ability to influence an AFL game was about as dire as most of us could remember. I still remember picking up players like Cam O’Shea, who just had very little to recommend them as AFL footballers.

Even when Cripps became co-captain in 2019, there was still work to be done on the list. The difference between the list then, versus the list Judd inherited, was still (in my view) that there were few stars / solid an and b grade footballers in their prime. Cripps would have loved to have 2008 versions of Waite, Fev, and Scotland when he took over. There was still plenty of work for Cripps to do in bringing the list up to standard.

By the way, I agree entirely with the rest of your post, and think you make some great points.

Obviously our list was ok. But it was too shallow imo I think we had some stars when Judd arrived as you said but then we faded away pretty quickly . We were very Fevola centric , even though Betts was a fantastic foil for him. Waite IIRC was often injured and inconsistent and sometimes played back.
Where we really were weak was our midfield support for Judd. We had a young murph, but Gibbs played back in those days mainly.

Our backline was reasonably solid with the oft injured jamison and LOTS of running half back types .

Cripps.

Judd came for the money.

What a cynical statement.

Gave great service to WC.

He wanted to come back to Victoria.

Would have been paid truck loads to play for Richmond, pies, bombers and Melb. Would have been given half of the surf coast by the cats.

Sure we made it very worthwhile him, but it wasn’t just a cash grab, he gave his absolute best for the club, even if his personality never appealed to you.

Short memories.

A massive VISY sponsorship that led to the AFL rewriting the rules about player payments outside the salary cap.

72 poker licenses handed to his company Three Zebras.

Probably much more that was never publicly disclosed.

I’m not saying Judd didn’t live up to his end of the deal, but money was the reason he picked Carlton and money alone.

You are not in a position to make the claim.

Your statement indicates you know the inner workings of an individuals heart and mind, which is obviously false.

Sure, you’ve built your opinion on what you think is the most logical explanation, but it is just your opinion.

He was going to get money (plenty of it) from every party who courted him.

There is always lots of components that go into a life decision like that.

It’s nothing to do with my short memory.

What a strange argument.

It's not like Patrick chose Carlton. He was drafted here. Not sure how you could argue one was 'more' Carlton than the other.
