Crows Chat That 'Doesnt Deserve Its Own Thread' Thread part 2

And yet the Crows SANFL sides have been at the pointy of the finals for the previous 2 years. Seems a cop out for the development mistakes, ie playing a top up player in the midfield over a drafted midfielder for one.

Then there’s playing guys like Curtin at full back on players like McBean.

Power, Crows set go to war with AFL over national reserves competition, leaving SANFL

South Australian clubs are adamant they don’t want to continue playing reserves in the SANFL as the AFL faces an impasse over a national reserves competition.

The AFL harbours reservations about implementing a national reserves competition as Port Adelaide and Adelaide go to war with the league in their desperation to quit the SANFL.
The South Australian clubs are adamant their development of AFL players is being compromised, compared with the 14 eastern seaboard clubs who compete in the VFL.

West Coast’s WAFL licence expires this season and the club has until June 30 to tell the West Australian Football Commission if it wants to retain a reserves side in 2025.

A decision was due in November and then May, but two extensions were granted because new Eagles chief executive Don Pyke wanted to assess how effective the model was for player development. The WAFC wants the Eagles to stay. The licence costs $600,000 and that shortfall would come as a big hit.

Port Adelaide’s SANFL licence expires in 2028, but the club does not want to spend another season in that competition.

Adelaide’s SANFL licence costs about $500,000 annually, which is much more than Port’s.

The Eagles ended their alignment with East Perth to field a reserves team in 2019. But their WAFL team recently endured 660 days without a win and sits bottom of the ladder with a percentage of 56.6.
Similarly, Port’s reserves is 0-7 with a percentage of 36, while the Crows percentage is 43.5.

Port Adelaide’s 16 top-up players train by themselves on Tuesday nights and only have a light captain’s run with their AFL teammates the day before they play.

The Crows and Port are angry that they cannot sign better top-up players like clubs in the VFL and routinely losing by huge margins does little for development.

Fremantle’s alignment model with Peel Thunder is a win for both clubs. Together they have won two WAFL flags, sit on top of the ladder with a percentage of 159.3 and effectively prepares Dockers to play AFL.

The Eagles have multiple options in front of them. They could keep their WAFL reserves team, split their players across a range of WAFL clubs or align with a battler like Perth.

The Eagles would consider signing Victorian top-up players to reduce travel costs if they entered the VFL.

AFL football boss Laura Kane, who attended the SANFL’s Magarey Medal last year, hinted the league was against a national reserves competition earlier this year.

“We have to make sure that we respect that (SANFL) history as we look at what the best developmental pathway is for our clubs,” Kane said.
“What does this competition need to do to support the development of their players? So no decisions on a national reserve competition, no plans to change the current structure, but absolutely an intention to make sure the players, AFL and AFLW all around the country, have the same experience and the same opportunity.”

Creating a national reserves competition would entice the best SANFL and WAFL players to join as top-up players to remain under the noses of AFL recruiters.

That scenario would prove extremely detrimental to the quality and relevance of the SANFL and WAFL.
Some Victorian club bosses also fear a national reserves competition would be diabolical for second-tier and grassroots football nationally.

A national reserves competition would restore curtain raisers before AFL matches and would ease the workload on club staff who often have to front up on two match days every weekend.

But the cost would be extreme and would likely require the AFL to organise charter flights with Virgin so clubs could travel across the country on one plane.

Some of these statements make little sense.

If a national reserves would be diabolical for grassroots football, why isn't it already diabolical in the eastern states which effectively has a national reserves? Or is it only diabolical because it affects SA and WA but not Victoria?

Why does the AFL need to care or respect the SANFL and WAFL? They don't run those leagues. And they clearly didn't care about the VFL and NEAFL when they switched to the current model. Why is there now care for the western state leagues?

The cost would be extreme yet apparently West Coast and Adelaide alone pay a combined $1M+ just to be in the state leagues without factoring in the cost of actually operating the state league sides

What’s amusing is we are apparently pushing hard for the reserves which will apparently hurt the SANFL, but it’s Olsen SANFL Olsen SANFL

Haha, no, not me. For a start I've always been a "lifelong die hard fan". But yes it was a great show - as always. The rain wasn't "torrential", just drizzle. Great crowd, maybe 45-50,000, and some of the best sing-alongs ever. Maybe that's bcos English people in a football stadium. :)

Now I'm in Harrogate and going to check out a barbershop quartet comp this morning, just for something different. :)
We did Glastonbury last year and had a ball. Was quite something singing along with 150,000 other people! This year we’ve arranged our own “Glasto” headliners… AC/DC in Amsterdam, Eagles/Steely Dan in Manchester and ColdPlay in Budapest. Can’t wait!

That article is deliberately written to portray both reserves teams as being non competitive every year.

Since 2014 Port have played in 3 grand finals, played 12 finals and competed in 5 finals series.

Adelaide have played in 15 finals and competed in 5 finals series.

As a comparison to my club Sturt since 2014.
18 finals, 3 GF’s, 2 flags and competed in 7 finals series.

You could compare both reserves teams to clubs like South, West and Centrals and you’d be embarrassed by riches in comparison.

Edit-
This is the same results for the SANFL worst performing clubs since 2014.

West-
Finals 4
FS 1
GF 1
P 1

Centrals-
Finals 8
FS 4

South-
Finals 11
FS 5

So when I hear someone like Chris Davies crying poor (especially when he is the worst Port chest puffer) it just confirms he’s a ****wit.
So do we demand special treatment for South or West?
Is Port or Adelaide governed by a prerequisite to turn over a certain profit every year? Are they governed by a meagre salary cap?

It’s just a bullshit cop out by the clubs to blame lack of reserves for their development failings.

The VFL and NEAFL was not the pathway from under 18s to the AFL.

Any move that weakens the SANFL or WAFL weakens those club’s ability to develop talent.

The AFL would need to either funnel more investment into the SA and WA pathways if that was to happen, or set up NAB League style competitions here and in WA.

Why don't we bring up the fact that after coming from the skies in 1993 and choking in a PF at the MCG that we some how go the entirety of the 1994 season not playing a game at the MCG meanwhile playing at Victoria Park, Princes Park, Waverly, Kardinia, Western Oval along with the usual other tour of the country.

Funny to reflect on how we're actually being stitched up less as time goes on.

I don't want the club spending a single second longer on this reserves league rubbish. Of all the things the club can do to improve, this is not a priority and debatable whether it makes any difference or not.

Slap on the wrist .....big talk, little action ....I'm yet to be convinced ground bans will be enforced ....too easy to disguise yourself

No mention of the fine amount in the Melbourne case either

______________________________________________________________________________________________

Channel 7 footy reporter Tom Morris posted about the incident on social media platform X, stating, 'The AFL is aware of a pitch invader from the fourth quarter in yesterday's @NMFCOfficial v collingwoodfc game & is looking into it.'

'The maximum fine is $11k + the league can ban the patron, who is the brother of Dogs player Charlie Clarke & friends with Brayden Maynard.'

The AFL has yet to comment officially, but past statements highlight their stance on pitch invasions.

'Running onto the ground during a match is not only senseless but it is unsafe and unlawful,' AFL general counsel Stephen Meade said in April.

'If you choose to do it, then you will not only be given a significant fine
but you will have to deal with local authorities and ultimately lose the privilege of attending AFL matches.'

This was clearly far more dangerous a pitch invasion that the Melbourne one .....the Coll fan gets a life ban & heavy fine .....the Adelaide bloke gets off ?

Those 'journalists' throwing the camera in his face are as much a problem as he is; giving him the exposure that he wants in the first place

We have a season with low injury count and the complaints come that we’re too strong and have an unfair advantage. Have a longish injury list and we’re shit and the SANFL is ruining our development opportunities. Every year it’s one or the other. Last year we went on record saying our SANFL winningness was proof the rebuild was a success. Now the SANFL is crap because both teams are losing. It’s a touch boring.

Its time to leave the SANFL. A competition with 8 teams with semi professional players and 2 teams that are effectively development teams is never going to be quality.

Move our team to the VFL and let the SANFL die its natural death.

Anyone hear Ebony Marinoff and Dean Brogan on ABC grandstand just now? Seem to have a bit of insight into some grumblings around / about the club, doing their best to indicate what they know without crossing too many lines, Ebony walking an absolute tightrope. Brogan was good tho, able to say what the thinks is going on without being downright critical.

FTR it wasn't anything revolutionary, bit of a boys club alienating a few people, especially older players, a bit stingy money wise, especially when it comes to coaches and list management, could /should get some help in there, culture was unhappy a few years back, ok now. That was the main bits I heard, missed the start of it.

Do you mean that the boys club is alienating some of the senior players?

That’s really surprising if it’s the case given how protected most of them have been over the past few years while we’ve struggled - IMO it’s been mostly our senior players who have failed to perform consistently while the junior players are consistently made the scapegoat.
