Toast CROWS get their man Don Pyke named Adelaide coach

I like that we've focused on the tactics and strategy side in our last two coaching appointments. For me picking a coach primarily based on their people skills feels like playing a player who isn't that great just because he's got good leadership skills... kind of like VB.
i think there are few peopls who are both genius tactitions AND people managers. Whats most important is to know what your weaknesses are and delegate those areas to people better at it than you are.

Really? I felt quite the opposite to be honest - this time last year Walsh came across like an absolute machine in his first presser. I had so much belief in him after that & it continued throughout the season.

Today, I thought Pyke looked like a bit of a muppet - he seemed hesitant & uncertain. I don't want to be too harsh on him, I just didn't get the same feeling I had last year with Walsh. I ain't pumped up, that's for sure.

Having said all that, I'm glad the search is over & we have a coach to kick off the trade period.
Serious? Cut the man some slack. It's just a presser. At least he's not a smiling clown like sando.
Let the onfield do the talking.

Absolutely, I was just responding to the comparisons others were making between the two. I think it has far more to do with my belief in Walsh than anything to do with Pyke.

Either way, I'm hoping he's a tactical guy who looks like a bit of a spud on camera - I couldn't give a shit what he presents like if we're winning games.

Welcome aboard Don.

I thought that the content of the presser was fine. Don seemed a bit tired but stopping to imagine the last fortnight for him, it's hard to imagine that he isn't absolutely exhausted. I most definitely didn't think he looked like a muppet or a rabbit in the headlights. His responses were well considered. I was really glad that he has already phoned all of the leadership group. Some of his sentiments were the same as Walsh's - particularly when responding to the question about danger something like one soldier goes down and another steps up. Next man up? Very similar. He didn't seem to know as much as I hoped about the players but he hasn't been in Adelaide hearing only about POort and the Crows 24/7. I'm very happy that he's been appointed and hope that he won't have small minded people constantly drawing comparisons for the next 3 years.

We loved Sando when he was winning, hated him when he was losing. It'll be exactly the same with Pyke or any other coach.

Not quite. I for one would not hate any Coach if we were losing a game and the Coach tried changing tactics (e.g. swapping from Zoning to Man-on-Man, or whatever), and also moved players into different positions....and we still lost - I'd give the Coach a huge pat on the back. But a massive spray at the players.
But it's when a Coach won't adjust tactics, or won't move players around boldly....and we still lose - that's when I blow a fuse and go off at the Coach (think Neil Craig's last few years).
Oh, and this extends to not being aggressive and bold with List Management. But on this last point, I strongly suspect the upper Hierarchy has meddled in this area in the past. I'm hoping Don Pyke will let the Hierarchy that he is in charge, in relation to all on-field, Coaching, and List Management matters. Nobody else.

I think it is time Rooch admitted be has nothing.

Rucci will never admit to having nothing.
I can just imagine what he will say tomorrow,
"Who did I say would coach? Pyke, was I right? Answer my question was I right"
"That fact that they announced on Friday is neither here nor there. It is irrelevant I knew he was signing and he did in fact sign."

Its not always that easy. The clubs spend months practicing their structures and positioning. They (in theory) should know where and when they need to be and where and when their team mates will be, and who and when they should be covering or if they should be leaving their man. Introducing a new structure at half time in a non final just because youre losing is going to seriously confuse the players. Better IMO to make minor tweaks as the game unfolds, and unless there is something really important on the line and no conventional way to get there, save the hail marys for the golf course.

Well said OCG. Its going to be a long three years if people continue to draw comparisons between Don and the late Phil. Its the last thing Phil would have wanted.

I don't know why people are unhappy with his press conference? I found him to be measured, concise, and thought he came across as a switched on bloke, but he's not overly aggressive. When dealing with people like that, underestimate them at your own peril.

Happy with this appointment, and wish him all the best.

I disagree, and quite strongly might I add. Need to have more than one general strategy in place. No offence, but what you're suggesting is way, way too much like Neil Craig's philosophy, and in his last few years he ruined the Club. But a lot of that was his list management, not just his match day coaching.

I'm not saying you need to have a list of strategies categorised from A-Z, but you need to have more than one.
A perfect example is having a Zoning Structure in place as one option, and Man-on-Man as Plan B. If that's too hard for the playing group to work out, then ask them what they're doing playing AFL.

Tad nervous I'd say. When you cut it down, these blokes bleed red just like you and me. It's natural to look like a nervous spud sometimes. :)

To be fair i was replying to a post about 'trying something new'

Id agree that a predetermined and pre outlined plan b is essential.

I think youre being a bit harsh on NC there. Things werent going great in 2011 but we seemed to bounce back alright in 2012 with a team largely of his making.

I agree that his time was up but i wouldnt go so far as to say he ruined the club.

Some posters will always find a negative slant to everything. They're not half fullers like you and I.
