A brilliant summation by Saints media - no offence Jake but this kid should be doing all the game reviews.

Steele was really poor for most of the day and his centre clearance efforts highlighted that. Why so many senior players didnt show up is/was concerning!
I don't think its Sinclair's strength either, and i'd rather he stay back and let Garcia or Windhager try to clear the ball.

There's no excuse for an experienced player like Steele to play so badly- didn't look switched on and wasn't injured as far as I know, and Hill didn't turn up to play until it was over. I think Hastie would be a much more effective player on a wing or half forward and should be persisted with.

What's really disappointing is experienced people like Jones ,who performed worse than the likes of Garcia and Hastie.
Then, tactically, Boyd was way better than Campbell, but not as good as Marshall in the ruck, and Marshall was useless in as a forward.
Your post is hits the sentiment right now. Like having an ugly sofa in the middle of the room, but you can’t move it unless you wanna see the pissed stained carpet underneath it, and you can’t take the carpet off, unless you see the giant hole in the floorboards. Welcome to our showroom!! Can I get you a cuppa? How do you like it? A rep will be with you shortly!

We didn’t miss any players because we paid Hannebery. Nobody left because Hannebery took their spot.

Winning a final is far better than not winning finals. Again, that final isn’t won without Hannebery on the list.

He clearly didn’t work out as planned, but it’s hardly the disaster some people like to say it is.
4 years. 18 games. 800k p.a. $177,000 per game. Winning finals is meaningless if it's not built upon.

Steele has been underperforming for a while now it's very concerning.

Seriously dumb take and I’ll tell you why. The list between then and now is chalk and cheese in terms of age profile. Lyon could have easily kept topping up and kept our side between 10th and 6 for another 4 years, but given us no chance it getting beyond that. We’ve taken a risk and turned over the list to go younger and committed to the draft. Making the side younger and removing depth is naturally going to have it challenges and there are no guarantees of success off the back of it. I’d rather we try and build something than just accept our place in the middle of the ladder and tred water until we go off the cliff and then we’d be really f*ked.
Dick head DB. I just want to know when NAS is signing

There’s a significant difference between accepting mediocrity and acknowledging that there’s no quick fix to our current state. I’d absolutely prefer us to be playing winning footy and have a list capable of contending but reality is that’s completely unrealistic.

Ross and co get the opportunity to right the ship and build a list capable of doing that because of how badly butchered our list build has been for 10 years.

If you can’t identify that that’s not my problem.
I cannot agree more…well said

Personally if were at full rebuild now then id say were in the wilderness for quite some time with compromised drafts etc.

Again, i dont think this was the plan, we were supposed to be competitive this year and topping up with FAs for 26 based on 25 being a finals year.

Injuries have cruelled that and im not sure what 26 and beyond looks like now.

Hopefully we can make 25 something worthwhile cause if not, its gonna be a long stretch before were worth following again.

Well said.

the thing that frustrates me with caminiti isn't his lack of marks/goals, but just his general footballing skill, kicking/handpassing etc. Would prefer to see him playing back if he's gonna play anywhere, cordy out, cam back, keeler forward

Yes so far Caminit seems to just be mainly a mark and kick man.

At present I would rather see him played back, rather than forward.

Playing Cordy has no upside. Better to trial Caminiti down back. At least he may turn into a player. Cordy will never be first 22.

I kept clear of posting after the game.

Yes we were young, yes we had a lot of inexperienced and young players, yes we were playing also a lot of underdone players and yes I thought in advance that we would most likely lose to a full strength Crows Team on their home deck.

We had reasons to not be at our best, but we were well below what should have been on the day.

Win, Lose or Draw, each week I tend to mainly look at how we played the game.

So for me the most disappointing aspects were:
  • Lack of "Special Sauce"
  • How many of our experienced players were poor to dreadful.
  • The lack of system in our play. Max Hall in first game shone out as the player who seemed to know when and where to run and that connection in play was vital. Given the emphasis on this during preseason, one just has to wonder what happened in this regard?

Arie tried hard and went ok for only his 5th game. So some promise there.

One thing I noticed is we often got sucked in like bees to a honey pot. Swarming the guy with the ball. Only for it to get chained to the outside and off the other end. This is a structural issue.
Been an issue for a long time that seemed to be sorted at the back end of last year.

We have a lot of good spread and run players so it seems even more suprising tbh.

The root cause is our full forward. If he doesn’t know where to run, then no one else has a reference

They were both clearly playing at like 80%. Just think Ross wanted some experience.

Second oldest list last week, only Collingwood older. I'm still so depressed by that match.

We got a few good experienced guys as every club does, but on the whole that group is mediocre.

Can't really win games consistently with a relatively low quality group of experienced guys, and a thin and injured group of midrange guys.

We barely have any in that mid career range. 23 to 27 year olds we have 7. King, Higgins and Sharman look the only ones with any potential ATM. That's the range where players tend to peak.
