Anyone have a report from the Therry v Peninsula game. I hear it was won with a kick after the siren!! and also that Peninsula were 7 goals up at half time and got run over, this seems to be a reoccurring problem for the pirates....

Very good game. Therry were down by more like 4 goals I think at half time. Looked gone a couple of times late in the last. Therry were 5 points down with seconds to go. A mark 45m out and then a 25 m penalty for late contact, resulted in a goal as the siren went. Top effort by our boys considering we were down to 19-20 men early in the game.

Therry are the early flag favourites for mine.
Akka, so where is your report on the OW v Ivanhoe game?
From all accounts, the Hoes were pretty disappointing. 1 qtr of footy will not win a game of football. Playing at home is a huge advantage for OW with the consistently windy conditions out at Hoppers. All sides must HATE travelling out there.

just thought i might throw up some premiership odds, if anyone wants to give there opinions on what they think.

willi $3.50

Peninsula
therry $ 5.00

banyule $12

westbourne
eltham $16

In reply to what happened in the D3 GF last year the reply from BKatt is a little understated.
The game became a farce as after about 10 minutes when Eltham were clearly getting beaten all over the ground the players took it upon themselves, starting with Hollywood to try and take out as many Willy players as possible and reduce the game to spotfires. Wong, Taylor, Cini and Macguninus in particular were sniped all day and the team as a whole did a very good job to not react and just continued to play a very good grand final game, despite the cowardly acts of Eltham.
As for the off the ground actions the club was reported due to the actions of supporters who spent the majority of the game yelling, swearing, abusing and threatening players and unpires - disgusting.

I agree the grand final was horrific for Eltham and there supporters - but not much different to the way the willi crowd behaved on sat behind the goals not to mention the 2s players. That was discussing!

It's in the past guys, let's leave it there. Obviously a bit of history between the two clubs was created on that fateful day, so some over reactions may occasionally occur from two clubs that have proud and loyal supporters. However i'm sure Eltham, as we at Willy do, agree that we have had some great hit outs in the past, and will continue to do so. Eltham got the better of us on the weekend because they played good footy, and we didn't. Simple as that. Let's try not to read into this too much and make mountains out of mole hills. No club is in a position to be self rightous.

What about the form of Ben Gray from Willy?? He`s been on fire!!! He normally plays in defence... but I see he kicked 6 goals on the weekend... very versatile player.
the coach must be wrapped to have him in the form he`s in!!

Don't worry about Ben Gray. Players coming back from injury to look out for at Willy are Anthony Carter (missed 4 weeks with a stray aggot) and Bobby Ryan (missed last week with a case of the shakes) .

Yeah we were very lucky that Ivanhoe weren’t ahead at ¼ time Buddy. 1.6 I think they scored. OW kicked away in the second, and especially the 3rd . Hunter and Pavez were kicking goals out of their arse, and the Ivanhoe forwards really struggled to get their hands on the ball, obviously still getting used to life without Pace. It looked to me that the Hoes had quite a few out, but I may be wrong.

Some good signs for us though, with some key players being played in different positions and excelling. Hopefully we can start stringing a few wins together.

Bring on GE this week!!!

Therry and Peninsula my favourites and the prices would all be a bit closer than that.

Haven't seen any standouts so far this year.

The committment of each individual club, rather than a large gulf in talent, will be the deciding factor this year.

I played junior footy against Cini. If he got sniped on one day, that would just be a small return of serve of doing all his junior career! lol He is a good footballer, but he loves the physical stuff! lol

Buddy, i guess like any club home ground is always a bit of an andvantage and yes your right more often than not it is a windy dance floor out over here at hoppers.

However after some early drizzle for the 19's the seniors and ressies conditions were near perfect it must be said. Not a breeze to speak of really and just OW a bit better on the day apart from our late fade.

Foot note- good to see some boys getting on this forum!!!

Just a few points:

Wamba: Couldn't agree more that COMMITMENT will get the successful team across the line this year....

Mysterydog: I'd like a bit of $12 Banyule if you are seriously offering these odds....not bad for a finalist of last year.

Hoppers13: It is good to see that the forum has taken off a little, sparked by the Eltham / Willy rivalry.

That is it, that is all.

Cheers

Well maybe its an issue with playing on bigger grounds......glen eira is smaller than ur ground and ur ground is small. might get found out on the bigger grounds. Just a thought

Probably the opposite mystery dog. We won two finals on very big grounds last year and have a smallish forward line who love the space so i dont think your theory is correct. We were just beaten by a much more committed team on the weekend, simple as that!

Although it no longer suits our style of game, we are always tough to beat at home.
Agree with you entirely, BP. My comment above was made after the Rd 1 Therry game. Despite Saturday's game, I still believe that Cys now more suited larger grounds.

Come on mate. Not a breeze to speak of?!?! It was blowing across the ground into one of the pockets all day! You must mean it was a good day wind-wise for Hoppers Crossing. Bloody freezing I might add as well.
The Hoes had a number of players out so hopefully they will be back in the line-up sooner rather than later.
Big test for the Hoes this week against Peninsula.

How long is Holand out for. I notice he has a pretty nasty looking contraption on his arm.

Sounds Like Willy got there just deserves on the weekend. Those idiot 2's players on the field and those in the Peanut Gallery need a good hard look at themselves and how they reflect on there club constantly mouthing off. If Eltham were fined for abuse in last years Grand Final then those idiots should get Willy fined every week, not sure how that works???

I think the Eltham v Willy rivalry has been fantastic for this forum, it's really great to see some passion & lively debate to spice things up on here.

I know with Westbourne there is probably a little bit of history with Ivanhoe due to playing off in the GF 2 years ago and coming up together.

Are there any rivalries or history between any other clubs in D2 this year?

Are there any rivalries or history between any other clubs in D2 this year?
I guess it depends on how long you've been at your club. For an old bloke like me, who's played in all grades from B-D3, I remember rivalries against most clubs. The only team in D2 this year I have no history with is Eltham, though a few of them played with us a number of years ago, so there will be some rivalry. Certainly in recent times our rivalry with OW is the greatest. Having pushed them (at least for a half) in the GF after they smashed us by 25+ goals in round one of 2007, we have a geniune rivalry. Then there is the local one with Banyule. And from many many years back OP, as we had a few ex-OP students at Ivanhoe.

Well done to your boys Akka on the weekend - played the better footy for the majority of the game and deserved the 4 points. No doubt. Charlie kicked two of the better goals I have seen in some time - played very well. I might have to target the game at Hoe park for my return to the fold. Do you think he would worry about an old bugger, who can't run, kick or play as a possible match up? :D

Yes, we had some players out - everyone does. No excuse. The guys selected still had an opportunity to perform and didn't for the majority of the game. I bang on about this all the time, but we need to lift our intensity at the ball and play a physical game style to get going. We did that late.....but too late.....game was done and dusted by better play early by the home side.

Very big test coming up over the next few weeks for the hoes. Lets see if those who get the opportunity to represent our club in the take a stronger approach.

Yes - retirement is making me grumpy :p

Cheers Grump.

I'll get the tips underway for the weekend, good luck to all teams!

YV v Willy - I expect Willy to bounce back after their first defeat and prove they are a quality unit away from home. Yarra Valley are very unlucky to be without a victory however I don't expect this week for things to change, Willy by 32 points.

Ivanhoe v Peninsula - I think Peninsula will still be fuming at last weeks 1 point loss and will come out all guns blazing. Ivanhoe appear to be missing key players at the moment and I expect Peninsula to run away with game by 46 points.

Therry v Old Parade - Coming off a 1 point win like Therry did away to the Pirates can be a season defning victory and they should have the confidence and belief to win this game. Sage v Bannister, the battle of the full forwards is a great contest in its own right, my tip Therry by 18 points in a close one.

Banyule v Eltham - 2 very even sides with result able to go either way. I'm leaning towards Banyule with a home ground advantage and I'm hoping the Baynule 2's players don't give Eltham the rev up they apparently got last week, Banyule by 1 point.

OW v Glen Eira - Glen Eira have some great individual players in their side but at the moment they don't appear to be performing as a team. Hopefully it doesn't click for them this week although I expect the windy conditions to make it a very even, tough contest. I'm tipping our boys to get another victory at home by 15 points.

After 5 rounds I expect to see the ladder start to really take shape with the top & bottom teams being stretched out. We should have a good idea of who is fighting for top 4 and who will be fighting off relegation at the end of this round.

My tips for this weekend:

Willy to beat YV comfortably and continue their misery.

Ivanhoe to beat Peninsula in a tight one. If our boys play with the intensity they showed in the last qtr last week, we will go alright..... I will mention the saying that has been beat up in the media this year -- "We must come to play!"

Therry will easily account for OP's and once again eastablish their flag favourtism. As Mabukka said, it will be a good old-fashioned shoot-out between the 2 top full-forwards of the competition in Sage and Bannister.

Eltham seem to be in form after their top win last week so I'm tipping them to cause an upset against Banyule in a close one.

OW will play the consistenrtly shitous conditions out at Hoppers better than Glen Eira so I expect them to win. If GE are to have any hope of winning, they will need to stop Hunter who had a day out against the Hoes last week. (It seems the prick always saves his best footy for us!)

GO HOES!

My tips are:
Willy over Yarra by 12 pts. Willy won't have it all their on way but will get the points.

Ivan v Pen-Ivanhoe. Peninsula had Therry on toast last week and with their rotations & multi-pronged attack they'll expect to win well. Hoes yet to lose at home so I'll go for us by 18 points.

Therry v OP-Parade to have a miserable day at the office. Therry by 10 goals.

Banyule v Eltham-Haven't got a handle on Eltham yet so I'll go with the Yules by 5 goals.

OW v GE-As their fitness picks up Glen Eira will improve but Westbourne to still win by 6 goals. Is Grant Connors back this week???
