I've kept out of the debate so far, but based on form, departures and signings I'm picking Westbourne to finish fourth on the ladder, and then do a smokey into the GF. D2 for 2008!

1. Latrobe
2. Elsternwick
3. West Brunswick
4. Old Westbourne
5. Powerhouse
6. Ivanhoe
7. Hawthorn
8. Monash
9. Kew
10. Swinburne

I can't see you being too far off Tiger, but I would be more wary of Kew with their merged ranks. Push them up to 5th, the rest slide down one for me

Yeah, it was kind of hard to know where to put them. I think Hawthorn will also do better than most people give them credit for.

Not bad Tiger Nuts, although I think Ivanhoe will struggle with some key departures and may finish closer to the bottom. Losing key players to fitzroy reds as well as last years coach to the Turtles with 6 of his mates. I think d3 may be harder to pick than you think. Kew and Monash with new coaches and perhaps new players will improve on last years efforts.

Kew better hope there are a few guns coming over from Nth Kew or they are dropping for sure. Tiger Nut's top 4 looks pretty good but don't expect much from OW, word is trouble at Truga...whatchamacallit. Still they will be good enough to sneak into the 4.

My Pick? Elsternwick, they have the most heart in this division and are getting superb players. No I won't name names.

They may have the most heart and some great pick ups but at the moment don't have a ground to train on as council won't let them. I wonder how this may affect them in 07.

- expect a much stronger showing from Kew , with some strong second year juniors from u19 premiership two years ago, and some good players form Nth Kew- in fact smoky for the flag for mine. Powerhouse have picked up more .. only query is run in legs-- if not swap them and Elsternwick

latrobe are terrible, best ground in the VAFA, but can't win a game,

will not trouble the top four, let alone finish on top.

That's pretty bloody smokey even by the standards of recent weeks' hazy skyline.

Are the merged Kew really going to be good enough to leapfrog all the teams that finished above them last year in D3 while seeing off challengers from D2 and D4?

I just can't see it.

Very hard to pick at this early stage however I know that Kew have had nearly 60 different players train before xmas.

The sides coming up and down can be deceptive, last year in D3 Elsternwick and Bentleigh made the finals where as St Mary's and Swinburne struggled. I wouldn't expect all 4 to fire this year.

Best ground in the VAFA? You're kidding arent you?
Whilst it is miles better than an Aquinas or Hawthorn it is
overly big, with the far pocket and wing often a quagmire(graveyard side), to the extent that sometimes they cant even cut the grass there, adn the centre is horrible. It is decent ground but would not trouble the top ten.

Would prefer a couple in D3 and D2, but in A,B,C,D1 there are several better grounds

That's kind of my point. Even if none of the four make an impression Kew still finished behind (and well behind) Wicks, WB and OW. For Kew to make the finals they'd have to leapfrog these three plus at least one of the teams from D2 or D4.

It's a huge ask... and while having "60 new players" down to training might indicate depth reserves results of last year seem to indicate Kew wasn't lacking depth. The new blokes will need to learn to gel and play as a team which isn't an easy thing to train for and often only develops during the season.

Good luck to them, I'm sure they'll be competitive and I'm not trying to run them down but look realistically at the task ahead of them instead of getting too excited about the merger.

Elsternwick doesn't use their ground for training during the cricket season anyway. They run down to Elsternwick Park for their sessions.

Didn't Elsternwick pick up "superb" players with great heart last year as well?

Round 9 sees some interesting games!
Two jumper clashes (Kew v Hawthorn & West Brunswick v Ivanhoe Assn.), Inter-varsity clash (LaTrobe v Swinburne), Ivanhoe's 2006 President is now West Brunswick's coach (the aftermatch may be a little icey),local derby (Elsternwick v Monash Gryphons)

Dont under estimate Kew at all, SFL Div 3 is better standars than Ammo's D3, I know this because we slaughtered Hawthorn last year in a Praccy game, and Nth Kew made the Grand Final 2 years in a row, hence I predict Kew to do Big things in this division!!

Madman I saw Black Rock host North Kew early season - trust me when I say neither side would get within 15 goals of the four D3 finalists of last season.

I dont trust you!! I think you just made a very silly statement!!

Hence we play Elsternwick in a praccy match this year, so it will be the perfect case study

You would consider a praccy match the equivalent of playing for the four points?

No one goes their hardest in praccy matches. Blokes are on cricket trips or playing finals, some blokes haven't started training while coaches are mixing and matching to make sure they get the right combination for round one.

You may get close in a practice game Madman, but not when it comes to the four points...especially having seen second play third last season.

No corridor work all day, no free flowing footy, nothing direct - that's how SFL Divvy 3 footy is played. D3 Ammos can at least go down the guts to their main forwards.

Have to agree with Mcglede here, praccy matches at this level are not a good indicator, most blokes are no where near match fit, and coaches are playing around with set ups.

SFL div 3 is more like VAFA D3 reserves.

Never seen either level, however know of a few Nth Kew boys running around last year who could have walked into D1 sides- they may have been top paid players, and have moved on elsewhere- but the fact remains, they could play football-
