Done. Well done Saints. ****en great haul. Ryder a bit meh but the rest will all contribute and then some, especially Hilly.

Enjoy the summer Saints fans!

I think it helped that they weren't dealing with Sydney, Carlton or Essendon too. What a shit show over there.

EDIT: JFC pick 56! Bargain.

Reckon both the saints and tigers would be happy with this. Gives us 20, 38, 39, 41, 56 at this stage. I expect Butler to return to his 2017 form and be a best 22 player for them for the next 5 years.
Are we actually going to be using pick 56 though?

Good pickup by the Saints I reckon, he had a great year in 2017 and he's only 23.

Even if Carlton wanted him, I personally don't think he wanted to go there he toured facilities got a bad vipe, I saw a HS article after he toured Carlton & he was like he wants to stay at Richmond but knows it's out of his hands.

I think he has made a mistake if he had a choice between carlton / St Kilda

He would have had more of a chance to play games at the blues than saints with Billings/Gresham at the saints
He will get a game at both Billings is playing midfield these days, Gresham is their only elite small down there.

Brad Hill and Dan Butler add some much needed X-factor that the Saints have needed for a while now.

Agree on Hill. Hill, Howard and Jones are the three real acquisitions. Butler is a punt, and Ryder to provide back-up in the ruck.

But I don't think Butler was gained for X-factor. We have players like Long and Parker who bot have X-Factor I think Ratts wanted someone with a bit more polish and discipline. So Butler needs to demonstrate he can do both to push the others out to gran the forward pocket.

Cheap pick-up, but relative as to what a kid could deliver at about that pick, is a handy a good acquisition.

I think a key plank of the strategy this trade period was to give Ratts more players who are ready to go in 2020.
Ratts already has to get games in 2020 into younger players like King, Bytel, Coffield all under 20 and Clark and Battle who are just a little older.

Bit hard when the Saints next available pick was 82. No real difference that late in the draft.
Great result for both teams. Hopefully Butts gives you guys great service for the next few years. If he gets his confidence back, I’ve got no doubt he’s best 18 for the Saints.

In 2019 Billings roamed far and wide. Often setting up play, but also pushing back and forward as required.

In 2020 Billings may play wing, but with Hill and Jones both in the 22 Billings may also rotate through the HF more.
I expect Hill will be pure wing. Jones to rotate through the inside mid to wing, and Billings mainly wing/hf.

With Jones and Hill in Gresham to spend more time forward than in 2019, but also with good midfield time.

Butler mainly competing with Lonie, Kent, Long and Parker.

I am sure that Ratts has aspects of his game that he sees potential in. But of the 5 players we gained Butler is the one who will find it hardest to lock a spot into the 22.

Blues buggered up not landing their main two small forwards that they were targeting and so Eddie has now no one to mentor! However at least Butler chose a team that can get trades actually done.

Richmond have already indicated that Butler will be traded for a 4th or 5th rounder. That is the best case scenario. He is basically being traded for nothing to just get him off the Tigers books.

He will not be traded fora player, just a worthless pick.

So why did Steven get traded for an even worse pick than Butler ?
Steven is contracted and the preference would be to keep him, but he wants to go and so the club will trade him though we will get unders.

However even a "fat" Jack still has some trade value. If Steven gets his head right he could easily have 2 or 3 ripping years at the Cats as one of their best. He could go the other way mentally of course, which is why his price will be discounted.

Clearly not as much value as Butler

Bit hard when the Saints next available pick was 82. No real difference that late in the draft between 56 and 60's.

Hmm Were you not saying 4th/5th Rounder ?

Ill miss his team first approach and think the saints have a solid player so hopefully best 22.
Yeah i had very high hopes for Butler when he was drafted and it looked like it was all coming together for him in 2017 after starting his career off with multiple injuries but stagnated after 2017 and Richmond having so much depth in the area Butler plays Bolton , Baker , Higgins , Rioli , Castagna , Stack and even Short and Pickett being amongst the rotations as well as a few kids in the reserves like English , Dow , Ralphsmith , Cumberland coming there was really not alot of options for Butler to look els where. Good luck to him and i hope he really makes a good career out at St Kilda.

The 2 clubs were both really good with the way they did the deal for pick #54 which i suppose was around the ball park for a player you are trying to accommodate getting to a new club.

I see it as a swap of Butler for Bigoa Nyuon who was rated very highly by alot of junior talent watchers and fits / fills a need at Punt Rd
hopefully Win/Win
