Richmond will not delist butler.

Why?

He is out of contract. You will not offer him a new one. Is out of favour this year. Higgins back next year. Stack will be a regular.

I dare say his exit meeting went along the lines of if you can find a new club we will help you get there.

If Butler wanted to stay Richmond would keep him. Like Townsend.

Lol, if we are getting Martin and Papley into our club, why would we need Butler?

If anything, Butler choosing St Kilda makes me even more optimistic we will get our two gun targets. Why should we be labeled as villains for having high ambitions ?
Eddie has a 1-2 year shelf life.
Those who know footy know Martin ain’t a small forward. And SOS would be hoping Papley would be more of a small fwd/mid. All Butler does is take the place of Kennedy up forward. I can understand those that still have faith in Matt but Dans a much better forward option than he will ever be.

Butler will be better value to the Saints and cost them nothing.

I don't mind him joining the Saints, and for him to have another crack at making it.

But let's not kid ourselves, he is only steak knives and not the steak, and St Kilda will have nothing to trade for him this year except worthless picks as other deals are the club's priority and they are all much better players. So if he joins us that will be the deal. That is the reality of the situation.

He was offered a 2 year contract.

They'll help him get to where he wants to go for next to nothing, if the saints didn't come to the party he would still be on an AFL list regardless.

His contract would of been for stuff all $, but he still would of been worth having on the list.

This is true. Richmond will get nominal compensation if anything.
But Butler will also be best 22 for the Saints. He will make them nominally better. That’s the reality of the situation.

76 or 82, like I mentioned.

Odd situation. It’s almost as if Richmond know they are the best team in the competition and are happy to let their depth players finds home for lowly picks. Almost like a goodwill gesture. Sam Lloyd was the same. To them it’s not worth posturing over a late 10 pick upgrade.

Not really, when they are getting talent like Pickett and Stack in the post season drafts then who cares about pick 80

In 2019 for much of the year we had 14 injured each week. The plus of that is we got to try out a lot of players.

Assuming we land the players who have nominated the Saints the "Best 22" in 2020 (Which injuries may affect of course) is something like:

Geary Howard Coffield
Roberton Carlisle Wilkie
Hill Hannebery Jones
Membrey Marshall Billings
Gresham King SMALL FORWARD

Ryder Steele Clark

4 of Ross Battle Bytel Dunstan Savage Webster Sinclair

SMALL FORWARD OPTIONS in 2020 Butler Long Kent Lonie Hind or the taller Parker
(Butler in 2019 averaged 0.7 goals per game. All the St Kilda players listed here averaged more in that role)

Butler is different to what we have but there will be a lot of competition for the spot he wants. If he wins it then great as that will mean that he is playing well.

But it is not just a matter him turning up at the club. He will need to rediscover that 2017 form when he averaged 1.3 goals per game.

He is definitely worth a shot.

Note I have not included Gresham as he will rotate through the midfield. Though I expect with greater midfield depth in 2020 he will spend more time forward that he did in 2019.

Not interested in nickle & dime stuff

Dad always told me its not how much you earn but how much you save

Its not the lowest pick that gets the best player and developing that player is just as important as finding him.

Thanks for the insight.
Will make it tough for him to break into that team on 2019 form.

But on 2017 form he brought much more than just improved goal returns. His pressure in the forward half as well as running out the back was immense in the last 10 weeks of 2017. That changed with his ankle injury in 2018.

Hopefully for you guys he returns to that 2017 form. I can’t see why he wouldn’t.

He is easily in your best team, he was that far away from being in Richmond's premiership team this year had Bolton or Rioli gone down he would have been in.

We get this nonsense every year that everyone in a premiership team is supposedly an out and out really good player and is easily in every other club's Best 22.

Whereas in reality the fringe players are mainly still fringe players. Some may be hidden gems starved of opportunity, but most are still just going to be fringe players.

He will effectively cost nothing and so no problems giving him another crack.

His recent form is that he kicks less goals per game that our existing small forwards. Ratts wants to work on some things and so IF he can rediscover his 2017 form and improve his defensive pressure then he gets a spot. If he just plays like he did in 2019 then he is not easily in any team.

Butler is quicker than Lonie, but not as good as a pure footballer. He is just that bit bigger though. He is slower than Kent, but better defensively and is more consistent. Kent is also quite inconsistent. Long late last season started to really get comfortable at AFL and so his upside could be much higher than Butler. Parker is a freak, but needs to learn how to do all the small things that good players at AFL level needs to do. He Has only 1 year at AFL and 1 in the WAFL and was in poor grades prior to that and so is still learning the game froma long way back.

Butler will be in the mix. But is no certainty. We are most likely looking at hopefully a small upgrade. Naturally I would hope that he has a real break-out year, but I am not expecting it.

I am more expecting that Ratten wants players as a team to play a bit smarter and more focused and Ratts may well see that Butler can achieve a good blend of offensive/defensive play in Ratts new gameplan.

Butler imo is a very good player and has the potential to be better than Castagna , Baker but he cheats'
What i mean by cheating is he tries to do the dinky things rather than the hard things like running past through packs and fighting for the ball on the ground etc , He waits for the ball to pop up and doesnt try to pick up the ball when under pressure he would rather kick it along and use his pace to win it which is fine but not all the time.

He will be a good get for a team and has midfield ability, He played mid as a junior and did well , Personally i wouldnt mind if he was kept on the list on min coin if he wanted to stay but im sure he will end up at another club

Wouldnt be a straight swap thats just ridiculous but #19+#41 + Butler would be around the mark
or straight swap for Jack Bytel

Richmond have already indicated that Butler will be traded for a 4th or 5th rounder. That is the best case scenario. He is basically being traded for nothing to just get him off the Tigers books.

He will not be traded fora player, just a worthless pick.

Bytel was predicted to have been around pick 10 and slid due to concerns on his back injury. He is now 100% recovered and so a valuable asset. He certainly would not be traded for Butler. That is just fantasy stuff/

He is really not on much oin so getting hi off our books is nothing , He would be lucky to be on $250k , Its just finding him a new club that would be the issue
But isnt that the same with Stevens are you not looking to get him to a new home ? Why the fuss about a pick

Steven is contracted and the preference would be to keep him, but he wants to go and so the club will trade him though we will get unders.

However even a "fat" Jack still has some trade value. If Steven gets his head right he could easily have 2 or 3 ripping years at the Cats as one of their best. He could go the other way mentally of course, which is why his price will be discounted.

A 30 year old with 'issue's that might come good for 2-3 years on $800k a year

Dont think i would be throwing a good pick at that , I think the saints are desperate to get him off their books if Hill trade happens
