Why doesn't Houston just go to North?

might be hungry for success. Port have been disappointing in finals for his entire career, he's 27 and North are still a few years off from being a contender. By the time North is good enough to be pushing top 4, Houston will be in his 30's, and probably being pushed out of the team by whatever young KPD's they are picking up through the draft now.

Houston is not a KPD

Why would a KPD push Houston out of the team?

Carlton simply don’t have the currency - to do so they would have to give up something of significant value.

That of course has nothing to do with Joe Richard’s being nothing more than steak knives in a deal for Houston.
It's not even about not having the currency - we have access to picks that will get the deal done. But we have made it pretty clear we want to take at least one top pick to the draft. A smart move for a number of obvious reasons.

Houston is a great player but imo he is just not worth the cost (currently rumoured to be around 2 first rounders) for us when a HB is not really a pressing need. We have Saad and Newman as core members of the team in that same position and a couple of others (Boyd/Cowan/O.Hollands/Wilson) ready to play as well.

It would be like the Giants giving up two first round picks for Steven May/Jacob Weitering/Harris Andrews etc. Probably better defenders than a Buckley but are they really going to significantly improve a backline that already contains Taylor/Buckley/Himmelberg/Idun?

Carlton don't need Houston. They're just recruited Nick Haynes.

4 players on the Collingwood list older than Haynes

That's why he isn't worth 2 1st rounders or a top 5 pick.
Well at this stage his value is what clubs are willing to offer and port is willing to take.

I would think value is not purely tied to position, clubs may have pressing needs for certain positions at different stages during their list build.

Ie clubs with an embarrassment of KPDs might not hold much value to them at that particular time.

If he was an elite KPP and 23 years old, you don't think clubs would immediately handover pick 2????

Well you just subtly changed the goalposts there from KPD to KPP so that changes things.

Really depends on the club. The giants for example probably wouldn’t give up pick 2 for a KPD right now, unless you are talking a future hall of famer.

Not unless they offer up a shit load more than pick 8

Laughable. If he had the same CV and was 23, sure, but he'll be 28 next year. Can't see anyone offering up what they'd expect to pay for Butters or more than you paid for 19 year old JHFF, for Dan. Good player, nice kid, but 11 on its own is a good deal.

Not really, KPF or KPD are seen as equally value. Why wouldn't GWS take another KPD, it would make their defense even stronger.

Melbourne already offered up two first rounders, Port aren't now going to trade him for less than that.
11 one its own, or even with a sweetener added won't get it done.

Breaking news: the Melbourne Demons are the gold standard of the AFL for sensible club governance and list management.
