seems to be some kind of shitty paywall...not sure how much I am allowed to post..

Gold Coast midfielder David Swallow has sought advice from a rival club’s medical specialist in the hope of overcoming persistent knee problems that have sidelined him for more than a season.

In a rare collaboration between clubs, the Suns’ 2014 best and fairest was granted permission to consult North Melbourne high- performance manager Steve Saunders about his knee woes, among other specialists.

While Gold Coast acknowledged it was an unusual situation, they agreed in the hope it might assist Swallow in the long term, Suns general manager of football operations Marcus Ashcroft said.

Kangaroos happy to help Suns’ Swallow overcome injury

Gold Coast midfielder David Swallow has sought advice from a rival club’s medical specialist in the hope of overcoming persistent knee problems that have sidelined him for more than a season.

In a rare collaboration between clubs, the Suns’ 2014 best and fairest was granted permission to consult North Melbourne high- performance manager Steve Saunders about his knee woes, among other specialists.

While Gold Coast acknowledged it was an unusual situation, they agreed in the hope it might assist Swallow in the long term, Suns general manager of football operations Marcus Ashcroft said.

“We acknowledge that David was in a unique situation with a significant injury,” Ashcroft said. “The club and David’s family wanted the best care and outcome for him. It may have seemed unusual but we deemed it appropriate for David’s long-term care.”

Swallow’s older brother Andrew captains the Kangaroos and has a strong relationship with Saunders, whose expertise in rehabilitating footballers is highly rated.

After rupturing an achilles tendon in 2013, the North Melbourne captain was able to return to playing 295 days later and lead the Kangaroos to a preliminary final in 2014.

The club is also pleased with the work Saunders did with recruit Jarrad Waite, who played a career-high 23 games last year, his first at Arden Street after 12 seasons at Carlton.

It is not unusual for a football club’s medical department to seek external advice to assist a player overcome a persistent issue. Cross-code collaborations are common, with Fremantle coach Ross Lyon revealing this week that Dockers recruit Harley Bennell was seeing an AIS specialist to assist with his calf problems.

But co-operation between clubs in the same elite competition is almost unheard of.

Although North Melbourne would not comment on the situation, they are understood to have had no qualms given the club’s strong relationship with the Swallow family.

Mindful of a potential conflict of interest, Saunders sought an assurance from both Gold Coast, whose doctor approved of the decision to seek a second opinion, and North Melbourne before agreeing to give advice.

Taken at pick one in the 2010 national draft, David Swallow was a Rising Star nominee in his first season. The West Australian confirmed his high rating by claiming the Suns’ best and fairest in 2014, pipping Gary Ablett, who finished second in the Brownlow Medal that year.

But the fearsome midfielder managed just six games last season after twice injuring the posterior cruciate ligament in his right knee.

The 23-year-old suffered another blow in the pre-season, with bone bruising in his left knee, and is not expected to resume playing until July.

While Saunders was happy to provide assurance to Swallow about his medical options, he has since restricted his advice to discussions with Gold Coast’s elite performance director Justin Cordy. The Suns are aware of rumours that Swallow’s problems could force him into premature retirement.

Gold Coast should have gone to North when they had the chance IMO.

And it would have happened too if it wasn't for those meddling fans.

LOL. It's just so flipping ironic isn't it? The shiny, new franchise with all the bells and whistles (so we were told anyway) has to come to lil' ol' North for specialised medical assistance.

Pipdreams hey Caro? I guess they do come true after all.

Do we want David Swallow? Cos I get the feeling he won't be at gold coast much longer... would he be a good player to target or doesn't he fit our list management needs?

Not going to happen, I admire David's loyalty.

He'll be a franchisee till his last AFL career breath.
Maybe, but staying loyal to your first club, despite other clubs being in your ear requires a bit of character, particularly with his injuries.

Very good publicity for us which has the down stream impact of players wanting to come to us because of our sports medical team. Whatever they are paying Saunders they should double it. Not sure how long we are going to keep him. I have a feeling once JB goes, so will he.

If he was going to go, he would have gone to the Utah Jazz when he got offered the job. Doubt he is going to leave to one of our opponents if he turns down a role like that.

Don't think you need to worry about that ;)
