Phantom Draft Davo-27's 2025 Draft Thread

I posted the video of Jack Cook's 1st round MVP game in the 2025 draft thread if you're interested. His old man Tim Cook was a handy footballer for the Crows and Central Districts.
Jack looks like a really good prospect, lovely left foot, seems composed and moves well, 37 disposals is a great result in round 1 :thumbsu:

Obviously highly rated internally making the 2025 SANFL U18 State Academy Squad and last years SANFL U17's Futures game

he was a good player for the winning WA side at the u16s, good medium tall def/mid type, but i will have to see if he has improved or gone backwards, because last year i was big on some SA players who were looking good at u16s in their dominant year, but didnt develop or they became less athletic after the u16s champs, so i will need to see how they go against their peers this year.
He's more of a forward hey? Well he was last year. kicked 37 goals

Interested on your thoughts on Kellaway.
Duncans son so finally a FS for the Tigs....
Played very well on the weekend.

I mostly go off u16s champs, because I don't watch much SA/WA state u18s/colts in the last couple of years, too busy watching ctl/u18s champs/u16s champs/AFL Academy, vic trials and state rep games, Kellaway was a good player for SA at the u16s it's been awhile since I last watched him play, but he would be more likely in the latter half of the draft as a FS pick up, Judd Marcello played flanker and mid at the u16s, good to see him kick goals in the colts playing more as a forward.

Do you rate Jack ISON??

cheers, i need an editor tbh, Jevan Phillipou hasnt really impressed me in a few games, i will need to see more of him in action this year, i will keep an eye out for Jack Cook.

Cook is quite poised little man, doesn't rush, doesn't panic, checks his kicks and usually hits his targets. Perhaps not a penetrating type but big accumulations and thoguthful footballer.

Phillipou not as good as his brother but still first round worthy talent for mine. Super runner and has had some very dominant games when given the role. Hardly got a look at the champs last year.

Yea last year he and Blake Kelly had a lot of eastern state recruiters very excited for both

i started doing draft watcher content in 2018 and i was curious how i have done over the years, i have had differing opinions to people which has caused some drama here and there, so i thought i would go back and see how i did over the years

mid 2018 was when i started, i had watched most of the championships, if not all and Hawthorn was in a massive decline and i could see that we were nose diving or about to, so i needed something to take my mind off of how badly we were doing, so i started my first draft thread

2018

Calls i got right:
Rankine, B.Smith, T.Thomas, Blakey, Caldwell, Butters, J.Clark, McHenry, X.Duursma, Sparrow, Hamill, Briggs, Jordan, Bytel, C.Taylor, Scholl, Bedford, Woodcock, Lach Young, Chandler, Butts

Good Calls: Sam Walsh as pick 1 early, Ben King > Max King, Lukosius being mentally weak in the contest(because at the time he was being talked up as the next Nick Riewoldt), Rozee to be a star, didnt like Hately or Mosquito, thought Stocker was a late pick and not pick 16, liked O'Halloran, J Ross and Vandermeer more than most

Bad Calls: slightly under rated Quaynor, B.Hill, Rowbottom, Stack and Idun

Unknown Players: Justin McInerney + State League Players

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

2019 was the first year i was given advice on a player and it turned out that advice made me back a dud in McAsey, so i got stubborn and now i dont listen to anyone easily.

2019

Calls i got right:
Rowell, Anderson, L.Jackson, Ash, H.Young, Henry, T.Green, Flanders, K.Pickett, Day, S DeKoning, Georgiades, Weightman, Bergman, T.Dow, Robertson, Schoenberg, J.Sharp, Worrell, Maginness, H.Jones, Comben, Rivers, Byrnes, J.Prior, R.Garcia, Rosas Jnr

Good Calls: i rated Serong highly even though others disagreed with me at the time, i had doubts on Dylan Stephens (which i voiced but i still put him in my 1st round), Sam Philp and Will Martyn, i was the only one to rate Chad Warner that i can remember

Bad Calls: rating Fischer McAsey highly after others told me he was good, over rated Brodie Kemp, Will Gould, Cooper Stephens and Dylan Williams

Unknown Players: Keidan Coleman and State League Players

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

2020 was a rough year, football for the year was cancelled after a handful of games, we didnt get AFL Academy, u18s champs, nothing, we had to base reads off of 2019 mostly and didnt get to see the players under the pressure of their draft year, it ended up being a weaker draft than normal

2020

Calls i got right:
JUH, Thilthorpe, McDonald, Hollands, Cox, Perkins, Bruhn, Powell, H.Chapman, L.Jones, O.Henry, F.Macrae, Laurie, O'Driscoll, Berry, Neale, Lazzaro, H.Sharp, M.Rioli Jnr, Treacy, McNeil

Good Calls: i wanted people to rate Gulden top 5 and Campbell 20, i had doubts on Z.Reid, Pedlar, Poulter and Stone, i rated Angwin way lower than where he was taken, i was big on Jack Ginnivan and Eddie Ford

Bad Calls: Will Phillips, Reef McInnes and DGB i over rated, to be fair everyone over rated DGB and Phillips, i also over rated Jackson Callow

Unknown Players: Max Holmes and State League Players

so theres a look at the first 3 years, i will look at the next 3 years in my next post, to see how i performed and if theres anything i can learn from this information, draft watching isnt a perfect science, but it can be rewarding.

2021 was another rough year, the coof still being an issue with football cancellings ect

2021

Calls i got right:
JHF, Darcy, Callaghan, Daicos, Rachele, Ward, Amiss, NWM, Hobbs, Wilmot, JVR, Lohmann, Johnson, C.McDonald, Hough, Roberts, Curtis, Soligo, J.Burgoyne, Ned Long, McVee, Uwland

Good Calls: i didnt like Sonsie and Sinn as much as they were highly rated prior to the 2021 draft and tried to lower their draft value(they were both talked about as possible pick 1 contenders), didnt like Butler in top 40, Had Owens and Windhager much higher in my rankings, also didnt like Arlo Draper and Cooper Murley as much as they were being pushed, i liked Jackson Archer even though others didnt.

Bad Calls: i over rated Neil Erasmus and Josh Fahey and i under rated Mac Andrew as i thought he was a ruckman, but his KPP game is very good

Unknown Players: State League Players

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

2022

Calls i got right:
Cadman, W.Ashcroft, Sheezel, Wardlaw, Tsatas, Humphrey, MacKenzie, Clark, Ginbey, M.Phillipou, O.Hollands, J.Fletcher, Michalanney, Alan, Cowan, Gallagher, Bond, Noah Long, Seth Campbell

Good Calls: i talked up Darcy Jones and Josh Weddle

Bad Calls: over rated Anthony Munkara and Adam D'Aloia

Unknown Players: State League Players

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

2023 group hasnt had enough time to tell who made it or not, but with limited information, i will try and mention who i think has made it so far....

2023

Calls i got right:
H.Reid, McKercher, Walter, Z.Duursma, Watson, Sanders, Windsor, Curtin, E.Read, Caddy, O'Sullivan, Tholstrup, D.Wilson, Freijah, Roberts

Good Calls: rating Jake Rogers highly

Bad Calls: under rating Calsher Dear

Unknown Players: State League Players

My gut feel is the Crows will likely go tall in the 2025 draft so I'm interested in who you rate as the top talls in this draft especially where you see SA's versatile athletic tall Aiden Schubert in the pecking order who has started the 2025 in excellent form also noting he's another with a late December birthday 21/12/2007 re upside?

I think you will find in regards to Jack Ison and number of the other private school boys that you won’t hear about them as much as their time playing in the CTL is very limited due to their commitment to school football.

APS footballers are not given the same public medical coverage in regards to their playing statistics / match reports as their needs to be some protection / privacy from a child safety point of view given they are playing in a school environment, whereas CTL stats/games are widely and easily accessible.

Jack Ison and a large number of his Scotch teammates are highly rated - they have a large group of potential draftees playing this season. Louis Emmet, Riley Onley, Kobe Williams, James Milner, Harrison Wilson, Sam Allen, Tanner Armstrong just to name a few. It’s worth trying to check out a few of their games if you are interested in this years draft as their is a huge amount of talent there, which the recruiters are well aware of.

Top KPPs that i have noticed so far

Cooper Duff-Tytler 199cm - was KPD in the u16s champs and was one of the best tall defenders, taking a few intercept marks and dominating aerial contests, has gone into the ruck for Calder and is also making an impression there in the CTL

Cody Curtin 200cm - brother of Dan Curtin at the Crows, he is more a KPP than a flexible type like Dan who can play Midfield and intercept Defender, went forward recently and kicked 8 goals in the WAFL Colts, so is showing some versatility and a growth spurt to hit 200cm

Cooper Ramsay 202cm - i noticed him as an over ager in last years u16s and he is quick for a tall, dark horse to watch out for imo

Aidan Schubert 194cm - skinny KPF who is playing some Ruck time at SANFL U18s level, clever forward who finds space and a decent shot at goal, played well in the u16s champs scoring on average a 7 and kicking 5 goals in 3 games, pretty agile, he's a chance to go first round

Liam Hetherton 195cm - played in the futures game before last years GF and looked good on a lead, kicked a few and looks a likely type, good physical build and strong mark for a KPF

Louis Emmett 199cm - was a very good ruck for VM at the u16s, has always been seen as a 1st round type, played good footy at Oakleigh too last year

Archie Ludowyke 197cm - good aerially, can jump high in the aerial contest, bit of an issue with goal kicking, probably needs to work on his action and routine, i was impressed early last season with his form for Sandy in pre-season and starting the season, but as the season went on his goal kicking became less reliable and he didnt seem to get it under control which is a worry and he could slide down my rankings if he cant get it under control, tldr: great athletic profile, worrying mental capacity in front of goal

Tairon Ah-Mu 198cm - impressive pacific islander ruckman that has also shown ability playing KPF in stints, good in the air, can kick a bag of goals, competitive, big hands, i spotted him at the u16s and after his solid performances for Dand last season others have jumped on board, lacks a little athletically which could hold him back a bit? but seems to have dropped some weight and is looking fit for this season

i would say KPPs that might go 1st round: Duff-Tytler, Curtin, Hetherton, Emmett, Ludowyke(if he gets his goal kicking right), Schubert

Ah-Mu and Ramsay could be talls that AFL Clubs might take a chance on?

Riley Onley has been training with the pies vfl all pre-season (and will through the year so he doesn't have to travel too much to train with murray). He looks fit and strong. Think it'll help him this year training with older players.

Any comments on his kicking? Does most other things well but really let himself down in the futures game with his disposal by foot.

I haven't seen an issue with it the last few months, so maybe it's something he has worked on. We'll see soon enough whether thats the case. The pies do this kicking drill in every session that is meant to about focusing on running and kicking to your teammate with the ball in hand. So hopefully it's something that's helped him in this regard.

Mate, you know I respect your work and we have always got on well, so hows about watching 1 colts game per week? It's free!
