Our midfield hasn't changed much over the past few years when he was in good form.
He took the tag from other teams and released our players. When he was in the team most people thought our midfield was good enough to win a premiership.

I remember at the beginning of last year a debate in which Ian Dargie was trying to persuade many other posters that our midfield was useless. At the time the media and many other bigfooty posters thought he was talking rubbish.

No joke, I was just at a shopping centre and a checkout chick that spotted some thing "West Coast" in my bag struck up a conversation about the game and the clubs probs.

She even suggested we needed to trade Naitanui or maybe Darling to get some decent midfielders (we have to trade something good to get something good were her words!). Even said she was glad we lost so we could get a better pick in the draft!

I walked away thinking "Our problems are that obvious that even checkout staff know the answers!"
Did you marry her?

Then bang her?

Did you put a ring on that fukin finger you dumb ass

I hope I don't hear any talk of finals possibilities (or even winning a docker Premiership) in next year's pre-season. If we can get close to winning half our home games we have improved

I wouldn't trade either for a pick. Our drafting and player development at the top end has been average at best in recent years.

I would only trade Kennedy, LeCras, Darling etc for an elite young midfielder like J-Bomb.

I still think we are only one elite midfielder away from being a top end side and our best bet to get there without giving up something we don't want to is either hit free agency hard or get lucky with our drafting.
We are not only one elite away.
We need about 5 good mids. Anything else is a patch up on our team. Plus the ones that remain need to change their skill level or gtfo.

She should be our coach. Sign her up.

The following players have A-grade potential IMO: Yeo, Shuey, Gaff

The next tier are solid enough as a support cast in the midfield: S.Selwood, Wellingham, Masten, Rosa

Too early to make a call on Sheed. We'll be adding Waterman next year. Sheppard is improving. As much as everyone (or most) like to hang shit on Priddis he plays his role and adds to our midfield. He isn't an A-grader but he doesn't need to be. Every mid in the team can't (and doesn't need to) be an A-grader.

Add one genuine star midfielder (preferably a big bodied mid like JPK/Watson or a strong goal kicking mid like Dangerfield) who takes the tag off someone like Shuey (but good enough to perform at the required level despite being tagged) and with NicNat controlling the ruck I think we are good enough to compete at the top end given our forwards and backs are existing strong points.

Your points would be correct if we were in the eight and challenging. You forget the players you are mentioning in wellingham and masten etc are pea hearted.
Our team is worse than you are making out. Otherwise we would be in the eight now. The skills and heart of our team ate shit.

I think our best game this season was against Collingwood with Yeo playing on the ball.

I agree with your summation and think it is achieveable. I do hope we cut our periphery players (i.e. Butler, Smith, and the like) aggressively.

I think that's a very simplistic argument and way of looking at it. "Yeah nah all your points are incorrect cause we're not in the 8". Hope you're not a lawyer. ;)

Gold Coast are also out of the 8, does that mean Ablett, JOM, Swallow, Bennell, etc are shit? Collingwood could be out of the 8 this week.. so Pendlebury, Beams and Swan must be shithouse?

We've had a shit year, there is no doubting that and we do need to improve. A good run with injuries and decent pre-seasons to guys like NicNat will also help. However I think we have enough of a core to build a premiership team, we just need to somehow get a Fyfe/Dangerfield type player to the club.

Gold coast....you are comparing us to gold coast based on what I am saying.?
Totally different to us. Great midfield and most of the team is young and developing.
You are simplifying our issues by saying we are 1 a grader away from being great.
What a remarkable player that 1 player would be to make us win another 10 game in a year.

Gollee gosh geeeee wow3eeeeeeeee I wanna see that.

It seems with Simpson looking at Abbott and Malceski, he may look at playing Hurn in a more permanent midfield role. It'd certainly help with the size issue and damaging aspect.

Hurn has proven time and time again that he is not a major ball winner.

It'd be fantastic if he could get 23 touches a game, but he simply doesn't get enough of it.

Settle down BT.

I'm pointing out how silly it was dismissing the points made simply because we are 'not in the 8 and challenging'.

We currently have 7 wins but have lost 6 games by ~3 goals or less. I don't think its a stretch to think that an Ablett/Fyfe/Watson/Pendlebury/Dangerfield/etc type player would have helped us get over the line in some of those games. If we break even and win 3 of those we're equal 6th. 5 of those and we're equal 3rd, all 6 of those and we're equal 1st.

An elite mid doesn't just add to our team directly, he creates space and takes the pressure off players like Shuey and Gaff who get tagged and to date often struggle to break hard tags. We need 5 more good mids? lol wut? Do you genuinely believe guys like Shuey, Gaff and Yeo are no good?

Another huge setback for us was Nic's lack of pre-season. He's shown over the past few weeks that as he builds his fitness he can get back to the best he showed in his AA season. Not losing guys like Hurn, Rosa and Scooter for extended periods will also help the team.

Our issues are pretty much our midfield, the rest of the park is pretty damn good, in my opinion. Adding 1 elite mid, drafting some speed and class like a Pickett and throwing in Waterman and also having a good pre-season for important players and a decent run with injuries would see us at the top end of the ladder.

Teams that rely on 1 great player are set to fail as soon as that 1 great player is missing or has a bad game. Look at how Gold Coast are travelling now with their "great developing midfield". They lose Ablett and all of a sudden they are easy beats.

Pretty easy to put down our playing midfield at moment with quite a few out. Sure the Eagles need 1>2 more A grade or better mids that's a no brainer but importantly we need across the board improvement. But where will it come from?

Our top 8 pick this year Pickett or a father son in Waterman? Yeo, Gaff, Sheed, Colledge, Tunbridge, Selwood? Who will be our best three mids in two years time? Karpany, Newman or maybe Ellis will put their hand up?

Who will look better in the midfield with a fully fit Naitanui and a hungry Lycett rucking next season?

But if you want to just moan and groan and focus on the negatives go right ahead, it is the easier option and takes much less effort all round. ;)

We get people like you saying things that are 'just a bit too fanboy' like this every year.

Last year it was "Throw in a fit Wellingham and Sheed who's going to have an immediate impact, along with improvement from the rest of our midfielders, one of the best forward lines in the competition, and a solid backline with the addition of Bennell, and we'll be contending for top 4....."

Agreed. Good points.
