Autopsy Demons 97 defeat Dogs 71. Never was so much owed by so many to so few

I’m honestly stunned at what Bevo said postgame, regardless of what we all think of Tom you just cannot publically degrade anyone.

It does nothing but hurt the club and it will of course be the only talking point for the next week.

So the Hunter story was obviously true and he just put him in the team announcement to **** TM. I wish he would use that energy for coaching.

Some busy days ahead for Kylie, Ameet and the AFL’s integrity department. With both the club’s and AFL’s stance on bullying a suspension is on the cards here.

As for the game…

Most teams win they win both the first possession and clearance stat but when you have that many forward half turnovers you ain't going to win that many games. How many forward half turnovers did we have? 64 yes 64, 20 more than Melbourne and it cost us the match simple as that.

Bailey Williams had 6 turnovers that were punished by goals, a record in the AFL.

We dropped 7 uncontested marks to 1 and had 11 no pressure errors to 3.

Macrae and English were excellent as was Naughton when we kicked it to him. Can’t think of a more exciting player in the competition at the moment.

Dunkley and B. Smith fought hard but there were far too many passengers tonight. Roarke’s first quarter was horrible but tidied himself up from Q2.

Libba spending over 90% of his time forward and Bont getting injured obviously didn’t help.

Including our two practice games, we’ve had 65 shots from 179 inside 50s (36%) which is well, well below par. If we can’t fix it up it’s going to be a very long year.

Now as always…

I think some of those labels are around the wrong way OG. e.g. the dropped marks, no-pressure errors.

Log in to remove this ad.

The good things from that performance:

1. English played much better than he has in recent seasons and I thought he gave a good contest and was good around the ground for the most part.
2. Naughton’s game was about as good as we could hope for from him, hit the packs hard, took some beautiful contested marks and kicked 4.1
3. I thought Bailey Smith played a good game and Dunks also gave it his all, Ed Richards for the most part also played well.
4. Bont looked like the only player capable of kicking it to a player and putting it to advantage, we sorely missed him after he got injured.
5. We didn’t get murdered out of the centre like in the GF and in fact I think it was the one area we performed better than Melbourne for the most part.
6. The second quarter……

The terrible things from that performance:
1. The constant turnovers from basic skill errors, the skill from AFL standard players was deplorable.
2. Bailey Williams the worst culprit and I used to be so confident when he had the ball, but he turned in another performance even worse than his GF and that’s saying something.
3. Josh Schache, dropped mark after dropped mark, very weak in the contest and totally out played even when he did get near the ball. Needs to go back to VFL and rediscover his form from late last season.
4. VDM I’m not sure I saw one decent disposal from him, not one! He will forever be remembered for that point in the Semi but unfortunately he also needs to go and learn how to play football again in the VFL.
5. Coaching: I can’t believe we had all off season to work on our strategy and ball movement knowing we had to play Melbourne again and what exactly did we do that was any different? It was basically the same other than the improved effort and structure at the centre bounce. We knew exactly what Melbourne were going to do and we seemed to have no answer. 6. They constantly moved the ball quickly and into an open fwd 50, we constantly moved the ball slowly into a congested fwd 50 that they would just wait for us to turn it over like they knew we eventually would whereby they would quickly move the ball and create a really good scoring opportunity.
7. Turnovers turnovers turnovers and more turnovers…… I can’t say it enough, I was tearing my hair out. Some of the decision making kicking into fwd 50 where it was like we basically picked out the Melbourne player to kick to. So many times we would have good options only to take the most difficult option and execute the kick terribly and turn it over. Caleb, Jack Macrae, Williams, VDM, Libba, Bailey Dale and more……

We got lucky with a few terrible umpiring decisions. I disagreed with a couple of their 50m decisions that led to goals but the deliberate out of bounds to Naughton and the Cody Weightman one were both howlers that gave us goals.

In the main we were totally out played other than a period of about 20 minutes in the second quarter.

The game resembled the Grand Final so much it was eerie other than the centre square issues and we didn’t get completely blown away in the last quarter, but otherwise it trends were very similar with momentum swings.

Very very frustrating game to watch. A bit disappointed with how many Dogs supporters showed up. I know it was a Wednesday night which is tough to get to, but I still thought we would have more support for an opening game which was a Grand Final rematch. I was there and in my area there were quite a few Bulldogs supporters, probably a 60/40 Melb/Bulldogs split but in the rest of the ground it was probably 90% Melbourne.

Thursday next week at home, hopefully it’s a better turnout.

Pretty upset by how bad we were, but good to see Naughton play well, he needs more help down there. Changes for me would be Schache, VDM and Williams out, Duryea, Jamarra and Jones in. Not sure if we can put another ruck in to help Tim but I thought he tried hard tonight and we didn’t lose it in the ruck so Bevo probably sticks with the one Ruck strategy.

This is so ******* annoying.

Stupid ******* distractions anyway, now this stupid bullshit and noise around nonsense easily avoided by a coach who should know better.

Surprisingly I’m really close to being comfortable if Bevo leaves. I’d much rather he stays, because he’s a better coach than most of the comp, but if we’re stuck with the denial re. ruck./KPD issues and now it’s coupled with AFL media conspiracy theories then who knows.

I know I shouldn’t feel like that, but that kind of feeling is creeping in. Not addressing our ruck or defensive issues for years, playing players or of position constantly… the list goes on.

Hypothetically, let’s say we miss finals. Clarko is available and wants to come to us. What say you all? I feel horrible for even suggesting it, but yet…

22 targets inside 50 not directed at any player! 22!

And frees favoured us significantly. 14-3 for holding the man/push in the back our way was the major difference there, wonder if that's how they play or we are better at drawing them, or drawing attention to the holding?

Williams and Schache surely first in line to be dropped. They were unfortunately worse than invisible like a Hannan- they crossed the border into highly detrimental.

But I honestly expect both to stay in.

O'Brien a likely in, and maybe another ruckman - Martin or Sweet.

So 2 talls in, likely 2 talls out. Gardner, Schache, Cordy - take your pick!

A disappointing evening, but a few saving graces;

1. We didn't lose heavily on the scoreboard.
2. We lost to the reigning premier still on a high at the start of their defence, not a team expected to struggle.
3. Some of our key players started off the year looking pretty strong, importantly this group included Naughton and English.

Some of the down side;
1. A disturbingly large number of players not only had poor games but they made nervous mistakes exposing their lack of self confidence on the big stage. This is scary because the mental side can often be harder to fix than the physical.
2.Our tendency to over possess the ball was once again a major problem that Melbourne exploited to their advantage.
3. With JJ out before the match, our small forwards were very poor indeed. I know everyone is lamenting the lack of tall forward support for Naughton, but I think the way that Weightman and VDM are currently playing is a bigger structural problem. They don't currently present a threat, on the ground or in the air. They also do not seem able to spread the opposition's defensive set up to create much space for other targets. There might be a few others competing with them to be dropped but I think they could both do with a stint in the VFL, particularly Cody.
I suggest that JUH or Wallis should replace Weightman, who seems to be trying to play as a marking forward anyway, albeit unsuccessfully.

Let's hope this is a reality check that we actually learn from.

I was watching the game from the ground level of the city end where it's easy to miss things. Did Schache really play 56% of the game on the wing? He had a shocker but that's simply a bizarre tactic.

(Log in to remove this ad.)

Shocked by the Bevo press conference and I expect him to get a please explain and probably a fine.

For me he was wrong on most counts and I think he needs to control himself much better than that. While I am not a Tom Morris fan, what exactly did he do wrong? He is a football journalist who received information on team selection and which was entirely true and he went with it. Every journo would do that. I know Bevo said others would make a courtesy call to the club but it wasn’t like it was some sort of personal information about a health matter or very personal thing like a relationship breakdown etc or some other mental health issue. It was a team selection news and it was newsworthy because Hunter is a former B&F winner and generally one of our better players who would normally be an automatic selection. For Bevo to say that Tom Morris should not even be there and to act like he did was embarrassing as far as I’m concerned as a Dogs member and supporter. Bevo should be more concerned with the leak inside the club than the journalist just doing his job, regardless of who he barracks for. The club should say something to Bev but they won’t. It was a terrible look for our club.

Great stats. Maybe I’m just predisposed to them because they feel like what I saw (a 8-10 goal loss) but interesting to see them.

I would hope that the players in the bottom half of that list are carpeted, because that was ****ing unacceptable. But their flaws are outweighed by the footy department’s, so I’ll save the powder for them.

If Mitch Wallis doesn't get a crack in our forward line instead of gestures wildly to every non-Naughton forward, you have to wonder what the point of both parties involved deciding in the new one-year contract last year.

That was a really really poor effort tonight.

Felt like a team of individual stars (Dogs) vs a team of slightly lesser stars that plays a great system (Demons).

They whooped our asses, and frankly will whoop our asses week-in week-out unless something dramatic changes.

I want to see wholesale changes next week, but our club feels destabilised enough…

None of Cordy, Schache, R Smith, Weightman or Gardner deserve to play next week on that form. Only thing is, who the hell would come in for them? Wallis, O’Brien, Martin? That doesn’t fix our game style or kicking into the forward line at all.

We are a darn good side, probably due to our midfield work, but are we possibly one of the worst sides in the league in terms of moving the footy quickly and efficiently from back to forward? Seems like such a battle for us, then the opposition do it so nicely on the rebound against us..it’s infuriating.

please no more VDM, runs around like a chook, poor disposal and decision making,

we lost because our bottom 4 players are so much worse than Melbourne's, rourke, gardner, cordy, VDM

libba, williams had mares
I honestly didn't mind Roarke's game overall (after a questionable start). Also thought Gardner was reasonable (obviously he's no Keath, but compared to Cordy/Schache he was good).

Libba was uncharacteristically bad. Worst I've seen him play in a while. He's one of our best kicks, yet was repeatedly kicking it directly to Demons
