I umpired game yesterday at new Latrobe uni ground, best surface I’ve run on since Arden street or junction oval.
Game between Brunswick (Nobs) and UHS.
Uhs has plenty of run as per usual and had a few notables missing.
Nobs on the other hand looked very slick indeed, very quick across all the ground, had some great set plays, saw some very familiar faces and plenty have never seen before.
Scary thing is that after game, one of the Nobs coaching staff said they had 11-13 senior players to come in!
Very healthy and competitive list, so Strober, your boys, friars and YV have work cut out!
Bring it on!

Surely everyone has 35+ at most sessions this time of year.....surely

Ivanhoe have ok numbers and will comfortably field 2 teams. Unfortunately they haven't got under 19's up. They have also again lost some good players and others have not returned.

Having said that they have done the hardest pre season in some time and definitely won't be the worst in D2.

Well done. Shame about the 19s - same problem faced by some other district clubs.
Looks like your new senior coach is ok despite all the rubbish reported on this site by keyboard warriors. He is fiercely competitive but genuinely good bloke. Good luck for 2019.

Wouldn’t be any different to what Latrobe had to go through last year

That was an outlyer, they werent training or playing at their home ground & lost alot of players. They would have still been competitive in a lower grade. The best thing about the vafa is how close the sides are & how quickly clubs can rebound. Having a SE/NW would make the ladders very seperate & early

So your saying that it was due to their lack of a traditional “home” that they weren’t competitive last year?

Yes that would have been part of the reason, as someone who has been involved in the vafa for a long time I have noticed that Uni sides can very easy go up or down as kids finish degrees, move off campus, get a bit of coin chucked at them from back home. Kids living at la trobe last yr simply didnt walk across the road to training & all home games were up the road at Parades 2nd ground. That certainly would have had an impact of recruitment & retension.

How ever you are completely missing the point of regionalisation v divisions argument

Are we going over old ground? It was changed in the past for a reason

That is ominous form from YV and it seems that Nobs and YV will be right up there this year with maybe Whiefriars and GE. Hoes played St Marys Salesians and went down by 15 points in a decent game of footy for this time of year.

Wamba, who were the better players at Ivanhoe? Had heard that Hoes were goal up at 3/4 time.

Hi BrainyTim. Hoes were 14 points up at 3/4 time and a few of their good players got on top.

Sam Tainsley played well as did James Course and Conor Mitchell. We have probably 5 to come in. Best we've looked for a few years at least.
