Do we have any potentially elite players?

Fro an outsiders perspective the two most obvious candidates to reach the "elite" level are Ryder and Watson.

Ryder's skill and appeal is obvious for all to see, he as much potential for improvement as any player in the league. You know an Essendon player is good when a Hawthorn fan likes to watch him play well.

Watson has to be watched to be appreciated. I had no time for him until I saw him singlehandedly dismantle two other elite clearance specialists in Sewell and Mitchell. Of course he has faults in his game, as do Buddy, Judd and Ablett, luckily Watson's kicking can be improved. He may never have Judd or Ablett's ability to operate as an "outside" player, but neither did Greg Wiliams and he was certainly elite.

Yep right on...

Depends what you class as elite. Everyone has a different opinion on this.

Is elite just the upper echelon of players such as Hird, Voss, Judd, Buckley etc or does it include players Like Hall (at the time they won the flag), Cornes, Goodes etc who are just A grade players.

Well, elite is the top echelon.. say top 20 players. Guys that make a difference week in and out and win matches.

Which guys do we have that can lay claim to being as good as the ones I listed?

btw Goodes is seriously elite.. or was.

In the midfielders game that is AFL in the present day and age, IMO we only have two players who have the potential to be classed as elite.
My interpretation of elite revolves around players who can change the flow of a match on their own and perform consistently, especially when things aren't going their way (think Judd, Ablett, Hodge).

Paddy Ryder: Decent ruckman, runs all day years in the backline have taught him excellent defensive skills. Knows how to take a mark and could go forward as another marking option. Can definitely turn a game (ANZAC Day 09 anyone?)
Jobe Watson: Prime In-and-under midfielder in the AFL, rivalled by few. Great footy brain (Thank you Tim Watson) and works his butt off. We've come to scrutinize his mistakes of the past and not recognise his achievements. Vital in clearances and his quick hands set up so many attacking plays.

The following players I rate as players who have the potential to be A-Grade:
Andrew Lovett: It will have to depend on his consistency. If he can maintain his form for the remainder of the year, praise will be heaped on him. I didn't class him as an Elite player because while we see his blistering runs and excellent delivery, he has a tendency to play well only when the rest of the team is up. But thast just my opinion. I still think he is an excellent player.
Alwyn Davey: Look at what his brother has achieved this season. Both Daveys were renowned for their defensive pressure and their pace through the midfield. This season, his brother, Aaron, has improved on his skills and is an excellent user of the ball (Yes, I'll admit I've seen a few Demons games this year). If Alwyn follows the example of his brother, he could be right up there as an A-Grade midfielder with the pace and skills to hurt opponents.
Tayte Pears: Has the speed, endurance and defensive prowess to match it with the best forwards. Time will tell but could we have a Luke Hodge/Matty Scarlett type on our hands? Like I said before, it is very much a midfielders game and its hard for Defenders to acclaim "Elite" status. Perhaps he'll evolve into a defensive/midfield option (like Luke Hodge).
Michael Hurley: Shut down Tredrea when Port were up and running. Once again, time will tell but I've seen enough potential to keep my fingers crossed. (Similar situation to Tayte Pears)
David Zaharakis: Yes I've been on his bandwagon since ANZAC Day and will not refuse to sing his praises. Seems calm and level headed when the ball is in his hands and is a good smaller forward.
Kyle Reimers: Based on last season (because we haven't seen him much 2009), there was more than enough to suggest that he could one day be a very good player. I was tempted to put him in players with "Elite" status potential because he kicked vital goals when the team was down and his pace and aggression was vital in boosting the spirits of our flagging 2008 team.

Just a quick view. Theres probably a few I missed but I'm starving and my empty stomach is reducing my mental capacity.

Elite is so overused now that it's just crazy.

Elite = Best in the league by miles at what they do and these 4 are the ONLY elites in the comp: Judd, Franklin, Goddard, Ablett and Cox. (add Hodge when in form)

Ryder and Jobe (Just 24) are the only ones to really look even close to that good

Zaharakis, Reimers, Houli, Pears, Hurley, Myers, Gumbleton and Dempsey could all be exceptionally good players though.

The word elite has no specific percentage or sample of a population group. Its a matter of personal preference therefore will be categorized differently person by person, IMO Elite is the top 5% of whatever group, roughly 25 players from the 700odd AFL players.

Myers will never be elite, he's not very good.

The 2 big chances would be Ryder and Hurley.

Wat.

Gary Ablett looked like nothing more than a serviceable player after 4 years, but Hurley is potentially elite after 1 game, yet ride off Myers after 14...

The term Elite is highly subjective and debatable :

For me in 2009 Elite means: Goodes, Ablett, Judd, Pavlich, Reiwoldt, Franklin, Davis, Cox, Watson

Almost elite: J Selwood, Rioli, Sanderlands, S Johnson, Goddard, Dal Santo, Pendelbury, Griffen, Murphy,

Was & will probably return to the Elite level one day
Hodge, Harvey, Kerr

Most likely Dons player to be elite one day;
Winderlich, Lovett, Dempsey & Ryder :thumbsu:

Given how hard it is to win a flag, i feel that we would need these guys to be close to elite for us to win a flag. But I think that at least two of these guys will become Elite.

Myers can't even keep his spot so I'm not sure why so many think he could become elite. In my opinion the best he could do is be in our 22. (Picking him over Palmer may turn out to be the f'up of the decade)

Please, Palmer can't bloody kick to save himself. Yeah he got heaps of touches but so does Carazzo, while I don't think he'll become elite picking him over Palmer was hardly a disastor.

Cyril on the other hand....

I've said it before, and I'll say it again.. Dangerfield.
Still, I'm content with trusting our recruiting staff. If in another two or three years Myers hasn't become the player we hoped for, fair enough.

Thought I may bump this to see everyone's opinions now.

I can definately see Hurley reaching an Elite level.

With maybe Pears and Ryder pushing for that category in the future.

hurley, ryder, pears, atkinson, dempsey.. can also see Laycock doing something amazing and becoming AA just because he reads bigfooty.

Reimers

All the tools - Vision, Evasion, Awareness, footskills, marking and goalkicking.

when/if he can consistently put them all together he will/could be Essendon's best player. Unfortunately he rarely seems to be abvle to do all of them in the same match.

Ryder will prove the most damaging ruck/forward player the league has seen.

Pears will be the best FB in the league.

Hurley will be a star.

We need our young midfielders to stand up and match the promise shown by some of our KP prospects- I think that Stanton will seriously challenge for a brownlow at some stage of his career, especially if he continues to improve as much as he did this year.

I would like to see Reimiers, Zaharakis, Myers and Lonergan to really develop into that next great player for us. At this stage, almost half our list are potentially elite; what will define their status is how they come along in the next few years.
