Autopsy Dogs beaten by Port 107-85

I don’t know, felt we were more unlucky than anything in the end. Every 50/50 or bounce of the ball seemed to work out for Port at key stages, we’d have some Port defender jumper grab, or we’d just miss a completion somewhere, whereas some random like Rioli would fall over at the back and the ball would fall into their lap somehow.

That ridiculous shepherd call kind of summed up the night.

They got away with one there.

Artie Jones ZERO kicks ZERO handballs sums it up.

We carry our bottom four or five each week and get found out.

Big list turnover this year please

Out list cloggers

Of all Dog players why is Jones getting bashed? Probably had more tackles than most the side and we need the speed.

Our pressure smalls don’t need huge stats

I am so glad I made the effort to drive for 2 hours to watch this. Now a fun 2 hour drive home.
Thanks to everyone at the club for putting on that display tonight. The rare moments of good - surrounded by endless repeats of being carved up by a young, fast, relentless midfield.

Do we match a bid for Croft - or do we just use both first rounders as sit atm on quick, skilled mids?

Regardless of how soft we all think our run home is, we are going to get smashed if we actually make the 8.

Ah well, at least now there's a 3 day weekend to ignore footy, get out and smell the roses.

Bevo will blame the players....again.
Firstly our coaching group is sub par no doubt.

Secondly you are kidding yourself if you believe this playing group is any better than mediocre, particularly where some are being played.

Some of the player efforts including so called better players have been embarrassing over the last few weeks

Port were just better than us tonight and are probably a better coached team all round. Their direct play was a highlight.

It's not O'Donnells fault Bevo keeps picking him but he really needs a spell. Absolutely doesn't fill any need in the 22. Just a spare tall in the team for no reason.

The bye can't come quick enough for a few guys.

You have a decent forwardline …would be better if Lobbe was more aggressive and do more.

Midfield has 6 or 7 jets who can play.

It’s your backline that kills you.

Jones is next to useless ..Bruce too. 3 tackles and 9 kicks and 9 marks between them both just doesn’t cut the mustard.

Lets be honest. We are a mid table team.

Defence is to old, and to slow. That is on the list management team for neglecting the defence until it was way to late. The unit has been ordinary for ages. We recruit a good interceptor in Keath, then make him play man. We recruit O'Brien who was ordinary at Hawks.

Our trade targets have been poor as. Can we please stop trading for other teams players? Hannan, Lobb, O'Brien etc. Stop drafting from the VFL team too, another long list of non impact players. Stick to the actual draft because it seems like thats the only thing we are getting right.

The midfield is a little overrated. Great at the clearances today. But we let Port go coast to coast for at least half a dozen goals tonight. We are to slow to chase down small mobile players like Butters. And they walked it out to easily when they do win the ball in the middle. How many times we let teams score a goal seconds after we goal is annoying.

English.... every single season the last two or three years. Has a hot start. "Oh finally, he is breaking out" Then vanishes for the rest of the year. Normally after an injury. But aside from a big game last week, been smashed in the ruck a couple of games before hand, and then again tonight.

Smith, love his gut running. But he is actually ranked the worst in the AFL just about for his kicks inside 50 being effective and marked by a teammate. Was like just one mark from 40 kicks inside 50 or something, based on a stat I saw the other day. Where Miers from Geelong has like half of his kicks inside 50 hit a target. That is a lot of ineffective kicks inside 50

Richards is the only elite two way half back we have, maybe even JJ. Not sure what has happened to Dale. Has fallen away big time this season. No longer damaging.

Forward line was much better tonight. Set shots in the first half was probably the only thing I can point out. But our set ups from their kick ins was slow and lazy at times. Anyone see Bont in the fourth quarter, waving at Weightman to pick up his man inside the middle of the 50m arc? But Weightman is too busy stuffing around and looking behind him, despite Bont yelling heaps. Port kicks it out to the open man, and they kick to the middle of the ground. Bont went off at Weightman.

Port were just to clean with the ball. Out played us most of the game, so the result is fair.

Effort - can’t fault.
Mids were great.
Back 6 were disgraceful.

It’s system. We turn it over and it’s an easy end to end transition to genuine 1 on 1s. At what point is the club going to admit it’s system based?

The past two games have shown clearly where we are at.

A good side that is off the pace of the best sides.

Too many players tonight had shockers - Arty Jones (love him, but zero possessions, geez), Lobb, Naughton, VanDerMeer, Dale, Bruce we’re all appalling.

I know I commented on this in the game day thread but I really just don’t see us improving to a premiership threat until we sort the defence out, it really is a liability.

People blaming the umpires need a reality check - they were bad, and the shepherd on the line decision was disgraceful, but how many times did Port score off our turnovers tonight? Thats the game right there.

We all like to pile on Bevo for selection but I actually liked the changes we had for tonight. Having said that, Bruce could hardly have played worse. Gardner can consider himself pretty unlucky watching Bruce tonight. Also thought VanDerMeer was awful - and he’s had plenty of chances in the past. Lucky for him Ed and JJ are unavailable.

Also have to give credit to Port - not a huge fan of them, but they’re very impressive.

Three weeks ago - with Gold Coast, Geelong and Port on the schedule, we had the chance to prove we are a top 4 and a premiership contende.

We lost and failed each each one of them.

Simply not good enough to make excuse, blame umpires, or say that we were in each game. We failed a big opportunity to prove ourselves.

We’re likely good enough to slide into 6th-8th - thats about it.

We haven’t improved upon last year at the end of the day - it’s the same mistakes again with coaching, goal kicking, a sub standard defence and wilting under the pressure of the top sides.
That’s the thing though. It’s painfully obvious Bevo isn’t capable of getting us beyond this point. I’m talking about the fact that we now have another season of no top 4 and needing to produce another miracle to make a legitimate finals run

O’Donnell’s continued selection is truly one of the strangest things to occur in V/AFL history that even Columbo wouldn’t be able to work it out.

Anyone could see he was miles off the pace of the game after his first match. He definitely has talent and I can why we picked him up as a Cat B but how is he going to learn and get confidence by being thrown on the likes of Stewart and co week after week?

Marcus Bontempelli would like to be called Marcus Cripps for the next few days please.

Beveridge refuses to acknowledge the opposition. We don’t look to take the oppositions strengths away so why would we consider defending against them or defending the corridor.

Structure is wrong through selection. We clearly don’t focus on goal kicking. Our stoppage set ups are poor, constantly allowing frontal exits rather than forcing the opposition back. We never see any form of demanding more from players it’s always a bedtime story or fairy tale crap.

If that Weightman goal wasn’t overturn we would’ve been a sneaky chance. That killed our momentum.

Marra has gone past Naughton. In a big way.

If that wasn't overturned, if Alir was pinged in the goal square, if Rioli was penalised for holding Dureya prior to the Finlayson goal....I could go on.

If I ever see #freekickbulldogs trending again, I'll spew up

I was comfortable with the bye a couple of weeks ago, but now I think it's a real danger game.
