There's no net loss when comparing it to what Bruce is currently producing though.

Sweet could also have 2 touches and do nothing.

There’s flow on effect by removing Bruce and replacing with Sweet yeah? How our fwd line sets up? How Melbourne goes about defending it? Marras direct opponent changes throughout the game. Bonts role might change because we need an extra marking target inside 50 at times to give us another option and force Melbourne’s defence to tighten up.

All just to accomodate Sweet. Just to possibly stop a couple of Melbourne’s centre bounce and stoppage clearances that might not even eventuate regardless of who’s in there.

It’s truly bizarre wanting Sweet in last nights game, particularly after the result and how the game played out.

And wouldn’t you prefer Martin over Sweet anyway? Yesterday’s 2’s game showed he’s head and shoulders ahead of Sweet. Even at 35 and coming back from injury.

Bruce attended 6 centre bounce contests last night.

Wanting to replace a player from last nights team, just so Sweet can ruck those 6 contests, ignoring the massive net loss there is with his lack of output everywhere else on the field, including taking a spot on the bench, is peak delusion.

The brains of some of the Cult of Sweet members must be mush. Too much cool aid.

I don't disagree with the players involved, so I'm definitely not arguing specifics...
...but 3Q (I think), the Naughton goal out of the ruck (or potentially even the English goal), but we'd been slogging and pushing and clawed back to be within a goal...

...and then Bruce goes in for a centre bounce. Gets beaten badly. They clear and kick a goal immediately and halt or run again.

Now, obviously they had 6 or 7 goals directly from centre clearance so by no means an I suggesting that it was a one-off, but I really did think that it was awful timing for us.
Maybe English was 100% spent and desperately needed a break, but if it was a planned rotation, or anything other than Timmy putting up his hand to say he was exhausted, then I think we needed our best combo in there at that point.

(We won, so clearly a lot more was done right, but it stood out to me at the time).

Bevo also fixed up the Melbourne hole they kept running into in the centre stoppages with a sweeper- it was a obvious fix but kudos nontheless.

It’s not necessarily about having a sweeper. Our mids can’t concede goal side until we’ve taken possession. Which is what they did in most of those goal side run ons/clearances Melbourne got.

It’s actually what we usually do pretty well. Mids at 3 and 9 o’clock and the others sits on the opposition’s sweeper. It’s an offensive position to take, but works as long as we don’t concede goal side too early.

Come on - clearly it was Mark Cullen, I froze and stepped through frame by frame on the replay - saw the 34 on the back

I've just got back from having the film examined at a lab and it's come back that it was clearly Ben Sexton

Williams is a defensive beast on the wing, but he also has the contested marking and penetrating kicking, can kick a goal too. Thing is Hunter is a defensive winger too, there’s not room for both IMO. We need some speed on the other.

Also McNeil is a beast defensively as well, he is genuinely head and shoulders ahead of both McComb & Scott, not sure why he’s always last picked out of the 3.

Absolutely not blaming Bruce, I knew he wouldn’t have an impact this year. But he was astonishingly poor last night, and May was on Naughty all night not Bruce. He still took a good defender, and the 3 tall forward set up is the go (why has it taken so long to realise this?) I think you’ll find the “2 ruck cucks” are okay with forgoing a second ruckman IF we have 3 performing tall forwards, this has literally ALWAYS been the case. The problem has been when we go in with Naughty and Cordy or Naughty and Buku, and we’re not getting any forward impact or ruck impact.

I don’t think Bruce improves enough quickly to persist, considering we have other options. Schache really is in very good form in the 2s I think he probably deserves the spot over Bruce currently until he gets back up to speed. Darcy probably should get a crack over him too, Bruce will be back next year but geez he’s a long way off still.

Hannan is such a poor defender, I’m so sick of watching him just run off his man into space like you’re back there to flipping defend. It’s not his fault it’s just a shit experiment. McLean was playing half back yesterday, make this swap ASAP or Cleary please.

I'd give Bruce one last chance against the Cats. Cats don't have a dual ruck setup to worry about and I think Stanley was subbed due to injury so English should be able to get the job done.

Bruce can't continue to have the same impact as he has had last 2 weeks. I'd give Darcy an opportunity instead if Bruce fails to fire again.

I take it you've seen the one when he moved to defence and tried to take a one handed speccy....because his other arm was being held

If he got half the free kicks Hawkins, Cameron, Riewoldt, Lynch and the like got he kick 100

Yes I saw it and agree with you but last night there were times he needed to get the ball down but he didn’t even compete.

If you'd told me before the game that Bruce would play an absolute putrid game I'd be certain that we had lost by a lot.
Although a shocker, his return is providing a better fwd structure and allows Marra to roam as the 3rd fwd and helps to kick 5 goals.
No Bruce, May drops to Astro and Marra cops the 2nd best defender.

Yeah happy to give him another chance but at the same time we’re desperate for a win so can’t really take any chances. Agree Cats is a game we don’t have to worry about English one out, but they also don’t have any big defenders so we may not need Bruce to cover a big body, and might be better off with the more athletic Schache or Darcy?

Either way agree he has to perform this week if he plays, again considering we’ve actually got options at the moment.

Bruce kicked 48 goals in 20 games last year but the Cult of Sweet are trying to claim that Sweet has him covered as a forward threat. Genius.
Bruce was dead set sh*t. One decent kick from memory. He looks slow and weak. Needs a month in the gym and playing two’s. He won’t suddenly be quicker or stronger next week.

He just needs game time but can get that in the 2s - I’d actually play him a lot in the ruck at VFL just to get the run in the legs. He’s so far off it mobility wise

I'd back him in over Schache, Sweet or any of the other proven spuds. At least we know his best is good enough, unlike the others.

Having said that I'd love it if we gave Darcy a crack.

I’m tipping the regular praising of players like McComb and Gardiner is done to give their confidence a boost considering the relentless s**t canning they cop in here and across all social media platforms most weeks.

We’d be pretty naive to think that sort of pile on isn’t seen by players.
Agreed Charlie.
I’m amazed at some simply ridiculous posts on here and social media and they can only be described as keyboard cowards. they don’t appreciate the damage they can cause …… plus they wouldn’t have the courage to say it their faces!

Sam Darcy isn't far off contending for this exact same role.

Not sure we have any time to wait for Bruce to get back to his best. That could at least be 4-6 weeks away if not 2023.

I love the idea of having Bailey Williams and Bailey Smith on opposite wings and then Bailey Dale on half back. The Triangle of Baileys to generate our ball movement.
