Review Dogs defeat Giants 86-71

It was a heavy 10. They were tired. The same team did the same last week and beat a top 8 team.

I worry about Keath too, but Gardner bagging is very 2021 the kids reliable
With Gardner I was more saying given how far Keath has dropped off I don’t think you can play them both together as both aren’t great with ball in hand. You can carry one but not both unless Keath rediscovers some form.

Have you just started following AFL?

Go through any past seasons for those sort of victories…even your great teams like Hawks & Lions etc would often just bank 4 points in a scratchy win around this time of year up until mid July or so.

Don’t need to be playing champagne footy in autumn…let Collingwood and St Kilda do that.
Not asking for champagne footy. But given our poor % I’m disappointed we couldn’t put a team who really won’t be a finals contender without their best player to the sword when we were 33 up. They had 11 more inside 50s and the expected score margin was 1. I’ll happy come back here and eat humble pie if we go 3-0 against teams who are also fighting for a spot in the 8.

Hard to get a gauge on our form with the conditions but the last weeks have been disappointing but a win Is a win.

Bont is leading by example but others need to step up more to share the load. English also continues to cement his first AA. Arty is improving but we need more from Cody. Scott needs to get the ball more and apply pressure. His pressure was very poor last night.

Next week will be interesting, two of the better lists in the AFL but with similar coaching level. Big test for the dogs, if we are a decent team we get the win.

Was pleased with a fair amount of last night and when we were 34 up I thought we're on here and was hoping for a 60+ win, but back of my mind kind of expected a narrowish win.

Get that sometimes you just have to win, but wish we would bury sides and not fade.

Bont. No words left.

Solid effort, but next month is the test. Should beat Suns, Blues, Crows and Cats are the test. If we can go 3-1 I'll be elated. Nothing less than 2-2.

Few points of interest for me.

We picked the wrong team for the conditions. Too tall in defence.

Libba was down on impact.

Handballs need to go around the opposition and not over them.

We failed to play a territory style game for too long. It was ****ing wet so play wet weather footy.

Jj and cd great last night.

Lobb becoming more confident and aggressive is a good sign.

For gods sake please get Norty to lead at the ball and smash a few blokes when they sit in the hole.

I still worry about being unable to stop other teams momentum. I just don't see any plan for it besides hoping for the best. Top teams will destroy us in those short periods.

And to let a player get 38 and 3 and almost take the game away from us is also a worry. Again, you can't allow that too happen and need a plan to mitigate that. Even just scragging him for 10mins to remove some confidence, gotta try something otherwise it's going to be a top player beating us in finals.

I love Arty's pressure all game. For a young skinny guy he went hard all night and got rewards. Reckon he makes the team better just with his character and making things more fun for everyone else.

I’ve read through this whole review and haven’t really thought he was critiqued. Not like Keath and Gardiner or Weightman have been. There have been a couple of real ‘negative nancies’ on the club and the game generally but most have said and I agree the Giants are better than their ladder position it was interstate and bloody wet so a hard fought win really.
I can't be stuffed going through the gameday thread again but in this one posters have said:

"Ugle Hagen has put out three the shockers in the wet, he had numerous opportunities but again but couldn’t hold onto the ball."
"JUH is an almost player. "
"Hopefully JUH can start getting those clean ground balls. Has looked panicky over the past two years."
"JUH needs to be better with ground ball opportunities, he burns the good work up the ground."

I think it’s mainly due to his ground ball stuff as he’s a little slow to dispose of the ball and can get caught, which stands out to people. Personally I think he’s having a great season, other than being inaccurate in front of goal which I don’t think will be a long term issue.

How many times did they hold Bont last night!!!!????

Time for words to the umpire fraternity. The squeaky wheel gets the oil.

If they won’t penalise for throws, they won’t penalise for holds or arm chops

On the topic of JUH he did put forward pressure on when contesting the ball. In those wet slippery conditions given his age and experience you couldn’t ask for more.

Apart from a few bad decisions on what is merely an experience gap I thought he did ok in contrast

He actually tries to break tackles and do positive things with the footy unlike most key forwards who would prefer to hospital pass it out immediately, it’s a positive IMO - just he’s a rake usually trying to break through bigger bodies atm

Wait til his 197cm/100kgs and hits the contest at pace like he always does, will be a genuine weapon at ground level

Yep, I think he’s a young tall who is growing into the game at this level beautifully.

I was responding to your comment on the review thread. I was on game day thread, which I rarely do but can see that stuff there. Game day thread is a bit like Bay13 and then it gets normal again on review.
I agree I think we need to treat JUH a little bit differently, but not because of his aboriginality but because he was a number one draft pick. And the crap they endure is toxic. It’s not their fault they were picked when they were. Look at Sheezel and JHF? And the list goes on.
Weightman is the real problem on the forward line, and I would only critique him, not for his skill, but playing dumb, flying with Naughts and JUH is stupid. When he is flying no one is crumbing. I’ve also noticed him getting nothing off the umpires, just like Ginnivan he has brought this upon himself.

No, Gardner's second half was definitely not better than his first.
He may have gotten into the play more but that doesn't mean it was better.

He also made more costly mistakes. His last quarter was a bit of nightmare for him unfortunately. He really needs to learn to play more conservatively as a defender, and that sometimes it is a much better option to not over commit to a contest and prepare to fight the next one.

How many times can one bloke make the same type of mistake over and over again and not adjust his approach?
i dont think you can play Keath and gardy in the same side, both have too many calamitous moments

TBF it's mutual.

Oh definately. Wasn't laughing at the sentiment - was more a dig at a pathetic attempt for a McGinlay style banner (and it's taken them 7 years to think up one that still doesn't hit the mark)

Spot on, I reckon if you go through my posting history I’ve said this exact thing at least 15 times 😂

Tbf I didn’t expect this difference though, he’s genuinely class - on a few occasions tonight he had a handle on the ball that no one else even Bont showed.

I thought his ceiling was solid but geez he actually has very few weaknesses, for some reason at AFL level he doesn’t fumble and has been spot on by foot - his two biggest weaknesses, to go along with his tenacity, athleticism and surprising overhead stength, he’s a pretty well rounded little player.

He’ll obviously never be big but If he can just get a bit stronger through the core, which he should, then honestly I’m not sure how good he can be. There’s something a little bit special about him
this is what happens when you recruit and select high ceiling players, when they pop like Arty is they can change the teams fortunes

our list has too many higher floor but lower ceiling types, i dont need to name them
