He's a nothing footballer, that's why he will be delisted

And likely picked up somewhere else.

Honestly, you might be right - but we drafted him with a second round pick, he was a very well performed junior, and his performances have been worthy of selection.

He might not make it - but we're back in the same situation we've been a dozen times over the last five years; refusing to give the younger players a decent batch of games to find out whether they are any good, or are delist material.

Absolutely correct, he deserved games last year without question and probably this year too.

As you say, our list management and selection strategies are poor.

I wonder if being ignored is ultimately better than getting a single game, going ok and then being dropped for the dropped Mackay who hasn't even played to earn re-selection.

There is no way our selection policies aren't affecting those in the SANFL, we've developed a class system. Best 22 get all the good stuff no matter how shit they are, the SANFL players need to beg borrow and steal.

Wigg was drafted because Walsh's #1 priority at the 2014 draft was an elite leg. We got Lever because he was too good to pass up at Pick 12, and we'd wanted him for years, but with the next pick we drafted the best leg in the SA U18s.

He hasn't shown his elite leg once this season. It's a myth.

So what happened to it?
he was a different player last year, not getting a game when he was running hot seems to have crushed the bloke.

arguably he should be able to get over that anyway, but we've definitely mismanaged him in my opinion. He was primed for a go when we ran into Brisbane and Essendon last year and Thommo was desperate for a rest as well. Anyway, if that and panicking in the JLT alone has put his career into a tail-spin perhaps its a bullet dodged, but he was certainly a very skillful player at his best.

You are wrong. Pyke's assessment is correct.

Every other effort, ball-winning stat was tied. Clearances tackles one percenters etc.

IMO they had more contested possessions because they handballed out of congestion, while we slammed it on the boot at the first opportunity.

Geelong retained possession with handballs and short kicks, while we kicked quickly down the line.

The result was that they had vastly more uncontested possessions and time in possession.

Because of that, and some defensive breakdowns, their attacks were effective and ours weren't.

At least Pyke can see the reason for the loss. Let's see if he can come up with a response.
This is it in a nutshell - past three times Geelong have played this way against us. We've then gone into our shells and in each game our kick to handball ratio is skewed in favour of kicks 220/106, 223/124 and 186/135 (in the last one on Friday night). When we play our best we often have more handballs than kicks - especially this year - so we need to ensure we get back to that against them , easier said than done! It does start in the midfield though - and given they seemed better structured and harder at the contest they were able to extract the ball and give their runners first use.

Basically saying we are soft and have no hard nuts

Yes. Getting the pill (Thommo style) is one thing but being able to extract it to advantage on the outside is where we are still b grade.

I think we need to stop using the phrase "best 22" in relation to the Crows and replace it with the much more accurate "usual 22".

The club deemed it was more important to re-sign Thommo.
Now after the weekends soft showing, if Thommo does get a gig, why exactly was he re-contracted? I don't want him back but if he is not picked thats confirmation it was a poor decision.

It would be 100% understandable if he did play. 1 week, throw the weight around, hit some blokes and general intimidation. Show the rest how to do it.

Then lead the blokes off and wave goodbye for the last time. Get in the rooms, eyeball everyone and say ' it took a 50yo in a zimmerframe to show some balls on the field, if you lot don't follow then **** off'

Actually not saying anything like that at all. Our insiders were still getting the hard ball but instead of clearing the contest with hands and getting the ball clear on the outside our hard nuts were just kicking blindly out of congestion. How you came to that conclusion would be mystifying if it wasn't you. But Marty's belief of the week is hardness. Have you moved on from the 4 tall fwd set up yet or is that still critical to our success?
