Just two words.

Baby. Bathwater.

Positive thought is that we've got six Grand Final virgins highly motivated to perform better next time. Wholesale changes will only lose us some of the pain.

I agree with this - but also we dont have enough mongrel. when buddy had lake elbow him in the head not a single player went over to tell lake he was going to have a long day if he did that and not one went over to stevic and said if this is how you intend to umpire this game you need to know what the consequences will be - that we will be hitting everyone of their players late and hard to the head all day.

instead mitchell elbows rohan no response, hanners buried by roughy no response, lake and spangher both hit buddy no response.

it was like a private school team playing against sale or colac - we just didnt have any real idea that the game could be played that way.

I'm thinking the coaches have instilled a fear of giving away frees. Buddy should have really thumped him and given away the free.

Someone needs to do a 'Chappy': "We will never lose to them again while I play for this club.

What was the last AFL club to lose 3 Grand Finals in a row? Also are we the first club since the start of the AFL to lose both senior and reserve Grand Finals in the same year?

Geelong lost reserves in 89 and seniors

Every day I wake up, that performance pisses me off more than the day before. Could be 50 years until the next time we make the Grand Final. That's the only perspective that matters.

I would like a explanation something anything to tide us over for the next 7 months because there are no words for that performance it just feels surreal.

Sure go in cocky/arrogant whatever but with a tackle count of 23-7 at the end of the first you snap out of it surely? the whole 22 were just going through the motions jogging through the middle as Hawthorn ran rampant through the middle.

I'm gutted by what happened on the weekend, we were outclassed and outworked but dwelling over a lost opportunity is pointless.

The fact is we had a great year, but finished the year off with a bad day however take a look at a few recent premiers:

Hawthorn
Won 2008, Lost 2012, W 2013 and 2014

Geelong
W 2007, L 2008, W 2009 and 2011

Port Adelaide
W 2004, L 2007

Collingwood
W 2010, L 2011

Essendon
W 2000 , L 2001

North Melbourne
W 1996, L 1998, W 1999

Us :)
W 2005, L 2006

See a pattern? It's not uncommon for a team that wins their first Grand Final to lose the second one that they play, Hawthorn ('12) , North (98) Geelong (08) where favourites to win and came up short - Geelong and North were overwhelmingly so. What is worth noting about these teams is that they reached the GF the following year and got up.

I think our list is good enough to challenge again next year, it wont be easy but is possible but I will back our club to do its best.

We have so many hard bodied players an yet they were made to look like kids, why wasnt tippet belting people? Why wasn't Parker used as a battering ram, why wasn't rampe pansting gunston? That was a soft performance, never thought I'd see our team so soft, they should be disgraced, its the last match of the year an the biggest one, get in there bite some fu***** ears of eat their children

Nope - all of those teams tried, didn't give a gutless pathetic effort, and most had very close losses.

The only one who lost like us was port and look where they went

True, but they also had a lot of key players who had off days and they were carrying a few passengers.

Hodge, Lewis, Roughead, Gibson and a few others had days they would rather forget in 2012.

Geelong's midfield had an off day in 2008, they had a lot of ineffective possessions and got carved up defensively. They never looked like getting back in the game after the Hawks jumped them in the thrid.

North were good in the first half in 98, but where butchering the ball and then fell away badly in the second half.

All of these teams bounced back, there is no reason why we can't.

For me, it's not a matter of perspective, or feeling ashamed, or embarrassed. It's a matter of feeling betrayed. The club and it's supporters were left humiliated and defenceless in front of the rest of the AFL community by what happened on Saturday.

I always thought there was a risk that Hawthorn's desire to atone for 2012 and Buddy might prove too strong for us to overcome if we weren't ready for it. But I was simply not prepared for the spineless capitulation that ensued.

A lot of people invest a huge part of themselves in supporting the club, and the amount of support we had at the ground was extraordinary. Yet it seemed to count for nothing when it needed to count more than ever. We ended up a laughing stock.

This is not going to go away for a long time.

hopefully you are correct

I know the score line was closer, but Geelong were very soft in 2008 when the Hawks ran right through them in the second half. And it's not as if they haven't done it to us before, they've thumped us in 2011, 2013 and now 2014 the worst part is that we seemingly weren't ready for it and that is inexcusable. So yeah, I'm not losing perspective, but I'm still pissed.

Geelong just kicked like shit though could have had them on toast

I have those same fears. I think we are mentally tough enough to bounce back, but at the same time that loss was so bad, the players know their toughness/culture is being questioned and dissected, and that mental toughness will be sorely tested by this public and private scrutiny. I worry they may implode, hoping they don't play a blame game when they have their next 'honesty' session, just keep it honest and above all, self reflective.....
