Strategy Draft assistance 2023 [Twomey: NMFC get #19 in 2023, x2 end of 1st rd picks in 2024, and x2 extra rookie list spots in 2024; no Sanders/#11]

Gee fair bit of sooking going on in here. We did this to ourselves remember? We now have 6 first round picks in 2 years. Plenty we can do with that! I think I actually rather this outcome to the previously rumoured pick 11 and single future end of first round.

Have to start moving those end of first round picks next year to improve this years hand.

Would WC accept pick 2, 19 and future 19 for Reid?

That would be insanely overpaying - 3000 points in exchange for 4396 points. They would do that in a heartbeat surely.

If we want Sanders, is it first in best dressed, and no bid matching possible ?
So we need to get Pick #4 frrom the Hawks just to make sure they dont change their mind and take Sanders instead of Duursma

$$$ and a no.1 ruck spot.

We aren't a destination club for FA's because we've been utter s**t for the best part of a decade.

And when we were "decent" we weren't a legitimate contender, we were pretty much St Kilda right now. So no real FA who was chasing success was coming to us other than money and extending their careers (Waite, Higgins, Dal Santo)

If we start moving up the ladder and have one of the best young lists in the league, players will flock to us, players follow the chance of success and a premiership.

We were THE destination club of the 90's because players wanted finals and flags.

Melbourne was attracting the likes of Bernie Vince and Daniel Cross not to long ago.

We have dollars this year.... but don't see any free agents coming

Sorry to intrude but I would have thought the late 1st rounders would be given to Nth so you have the leverage to go after the Suns pick and get your man Sanders rather than chase Reid?

I'd suggest the AFL is giving us the option to do either or to chase mature talent. Basically, making it our choice that we live and die by, rather than limiting to a single player that we are forced to take regardless of our list profile and needs.

How does this relate to us getting Sanders now that he is a part of our NGA Academy? No mention of us being able to match a pick on him within the first 40 picks, which if we are able to, we could use a combination of these and other picks to get him.

Or am I dumber than even I think.

He's NGA eligible in the same way Mac Andrew was. If we want him we'll have to pick him ourselves.

Pretty simple isn't it? The only way we can get him is to actually draft him with one of our picks. Which seems unlikely at 2 or 3. So was all a pretty pointless exercise to get him added to our NGA.

Well if he was ranked in the first couple of picks in the Phantom Drafts, yes of course it would be simple. But he is more likely to go around 6 or 7, according to those Phantoms, which means if we are of the same mindset as them, we won't get him.

Which essentially means that the AFL have given with the one hand and taken away with the other.

What a bunch of miserable weasels they are.

Having said that, getting Pick 19 and 19 and 20 next year, is still good value, especially if we can trade the next year Picks for someone decent this year.

Always players not picks. The points system doesn’t matter to clubs when it gets to draft night… however would be slight overs. I would pay that for Reid. Not sure Viney would, also not sure Eagles would accept still

Assuming we finish bottom 2 again next year you would think we will be right back asking for more assistance.

If draft picks were not the only way to help us improve was there anything about an increase in the soft cap for development coaches or something?
Perhaps let's not open that can of worms.

They haven't taken away, Sanders (like other non NSW and QLD club NGAs) remains eligible to be matched if taken after 40. Which is academic.

That's a decent priority pick package. Anyone saying anything else would be wrong.

Also suggest those two future picks will be sent elsewhere for two players. Possibly Sydney and Carlton.

Leaves us with 2,3, 14, 19. Not freaking bad aye.

Curtin & McKercher, then don't give a shit. As long as they're decent types.

2 and 14 for Reid would be as much as I would offer.

Leaves us 1,3 and 19.

Wash your ****ing mouth out.

If either of those two picks are traded for Stephens or Fisher, there will be a 3 ton truck of manure on the front steps of Arden St the following day.

If we finish bottom 2 again next year there is something seriously wrong and I’d expect AFL board and FD appointments.

People melting down are the same brain-dead campaigners who are spouting 'north will be given pick 3 already!' BS, with no actual understanding of the rules, nor the reason those rules are in place. Best to ignore them and focus on getting our picks right.
Don’t ignore them.

Delight in their melty goodness.

Yes 3 first round picks too much. I would rather use them all in players

In the historical context of what assistance packages have looked like, this is a poor outcome.

However; disregarding that and having SOME optimism with our list and injecting potentially 4 players this year in the top 20 and a further 3/4 next year…. Hopefully that gives us some list competition.

I would debate the merit of treading our future second round and a pick 19 for example for a top 10 selection this year and try to nab one of the talls.
