Opinion Dustin Martin is better than Dangerfield

If you look at the stats sheet for last night you would think Martin had a run of the mill really good midfielder game, but that's just because there isn't any one statistic which accurately records footballers turning contested 50-50 situations into lace out easy goal scoring opportunities for their team- there aren't words to describe how good he was last night, one of the most impressive finals performances I've ever seen.

That said, that fend off is a serious shoulder injury waiting to happen- Sooner or later opposition players are going to stop trying to get to his body mass when they tackle and realise if he sticks his arm in their direction and runs in the other, it is entirely within the rules for them just to grab his wrist and yank his shoulder out of its socket.

A lot of people said that was what would happen but the fend just got stronger. Some players do try it but it comes out so fast its much easier said than done

Martin was certainly better than Dangerfield last night (had huge impact with the ball). That said I think its still very close between them. Martin has probably edged him out in 2017 but Dangerfield still managed to kick a ton of goals whilst racking up touches. Whilst Dangerfield's disposal is not as good as Martin he can still be extremely damaging with his touches because of his elite pace - which sometimes means a simple handball after he's run 20 metres into space can break the game open. The fend off is great but if you can just run past the opposing player its even better because its quicker which gives the opposition less time to structure up defensively.

Personally I think Dangerfield is a bit better overhead but Martin is great too. A bit like how both players are really strong but Martin edges out Dangerfield. I like Dangerfield's forward play a bit better. Not only is he great overhead but on the lead he is very hard to cover - all he needs to do is a simple push and shove and then quick lead and he's free. Seems very easy and repeatable.

This whole post was pretty much splitting hairs so basically I'd have the players equal at the moment, giving the nod to Martin in 2017 but going forward I don't think there's a lot separating them.

SEN ratings on the big stage in front of 95,000

Patrick DANGERFIELD – 5
Quiet first half (five effective disp) but did kick goal on halftime siren. Tried hard but impact well down; 14 effective touches.

Dustin MARTIN – 9
Star playmaker was superb and lifted to another level with sublime last term that put the game to bed; 28 disposals.

How often do you see that in league or union where 80% of the players use the fend reguarly?

He adjusts.

If players are waiting for the fend, he just keeps running and forces them to chase/tackle.
If players go for the waist, their centre of gravity is lower so they're easier to fend.
If players go for and get the body, he makes sure he puts the ball on his foot no matter what.

It never felt right calling Danger the best in the comp as I've seen better players with the status he has, Danger has kinda gone backwards since the AFL has made him the mascot of the league he tries to do it all and honestly he still cant kick when in full stride, Danger in the forward line is pretty damn damaging when hes on song though.

Dusty gets everyone involved and lifts the entire side, he could of had 4 goals yesterday.

When I think Elite I think of, Cousins, Judd, Mitchell, Kerr, Ablett and so on.

Dusty deserves the elite label hes just one of those guys.

Sounds easy and most try to grab his arm but he is just to powerful through the core and leaves most in his wake
What does his outreached arm have to do with his core? If you grab it and drop, it will be ball. People do it all the time in rugby and NFL. Don't act like he's some sort of invincible being.

Haha, the best footballers in the comp can't deal with it, but you could.

Did I said I could? Rofl.
Don't be so precious. All I'm saying is that AFL tackling standards are low if you can't grab a guy by an outstretched arm.

The thing is he doesn't just hang his arm out ready for it to be grabbed. He does it when he is in best position to do it. He's been doing it all his life. Was well documented in junior footy.
At the moment he is beast mode. He is like a raging bull. It is not as easy as you think.

Because saying you're going to do that and actually doing it are two very different things. He is too strong and fast to be tackled most of the time, it's that simple.

He waits until the player commits to the tackle, then holds him at arm's length. Even a good grip on the arm isn't going to stop someone of Martin's power getting the ball away unless he can be pulled off balance.

The Dusty don't argue is set to torment the opposition for years, unless the AFL invents a special rule like they did with Bartlett.

Dustin Martin is better.

Dangerfield is a beast though. Would love him at the saints.

However, Dustin Martin is a godly player. JESUS CHRIST it's a a relief to once again watch a godly player in AFL. Too many boring possession accumulators in this competition these days. Super fit accumulators who uninspiringly run around accruing pointless boring possessions.

Dustin Martin, however, is at Lionel Messi/Zinedine Zidane level of godliness. Supreme skills, supreme awareness, he's a play maker and a ball winner. A punisher of the opposition.

Once i again, i conclude my post expressing what a relief it is watching a proper AFL player once again. AFL running through his blood like a Tony Locket, or Wayne Carey, or Gary Ablett Senior. The AFL'ness just oozing. I thought we'd have no more players of that caliber.

Dustin Martin, thank you.

hes got good reach too

Dangerfield is 15 months older than martin

Dangerfield had a breakout year in 2012 but until then he was a low possession player that was skinny and played less game time

Martin has been a beast since he come into the afl

Dangerfield has had a great last 5 years but Dusty has been on song since day dot

Dusty is a better kick and he hurts the opposition more

statts at same age
