Re: Dylan Buckley officially a Blue !!

Surprised that we got him for nix in the end. Injuries surely played a role but it's also feasible that other clubs just didn't rate him very highly.

Reserving my judgement on this one as obviously he's got a lot to work one (size and continuity in his footy being the main ones).

Re: Dylan Buckley officially a Blue !!

Excellent. Text-book perfect manipulation of the F/S rule. Given he was already working with Carlton, there was no need to do anything to get attention and bump the draft price up. Now his draft selection is locked in and he's over his injuries we can get to work. Absolute bargain.

:)

Re: Dylan Buckley officially a Blue !!

How can we be fooled ..he cost us nothing ..

Yeah, staggering isn't it? Whatever is, is. He's not going to be any better or worse depending on where he goes in the draft. People were just about begging for us to have to use our first pick as if that magically made him a better player.

Nothing but good news here.

Re: Dylan Buckley officially a Blue !!

Gosh some over sensitive people here... my post did not allude to him being "shyte" because he was overlooked...

I was just surprised considering 2 years ago he was expected to be at least a 2nd rounder or better... so my worry was more aimed at perhaps his injuries are a lot worse than what we're led to believe or perhaps his not viewed as being a long term AFL prospect.

In a compromised draft where a team like Geelong don't have a first pick till 30something and Dylan is for example considered to be worth a pick 15 by them... hyperthetically why wouldn't you offer your first round pick for him?

If the highlighted does come true, who cares it has cost us pick no.98. No need to be 'worried'.......

If geelong did see him as a potential pick 15 then they probably would have bid for him.

From what i have read he was a highly rated junior who has had injuries the last year or 2 and played minimum footy. So clubs wouldnt have a clear indication of how good he is/can be. I dare say if he wasnt a former players son then we may not have drafted him or got him with a last pick or 2.

Finally, it doesnt matter what number you have been taken in the draft, it is upto the club/player to do the hardyards and make himself into a footballer. Heres hoping Dylan can break into this great midfield in the future (dare say 2013 onwards)

Re: Dylan Buckley officially a Blue !!

I think another positive of this outcome is the reduced expectation on the kids shoulders. If we had to use a first or second round pick, people may have hoped for a gun and no doubt, within the first year of service.

Now he can develop for a year or two and then hopefully in his 3rd year establish himself into our midfield.

Re: Dylan Buckley officially a Blue !!

I think we need to consider the far more likely scenario that rather than us being awfully clever and duping everyone, the other clubs just have a healthy respect for the tradition at play in the f/s rule, and given Dylan is generic mid with a durability query who has barely played in 12 moths, they had no desire to interfere in him making it to his father's club.

If he played a specialist position and was indisputably a gun, then they would have been derelict in their duty in not having a closer look at him. As it stands I'm sure most of them are happy for Dylan, his Dad and the club.

The important thing is that in future years when the shoe is on the other foot, we remember how clubs played it this year and reciprocate. The F/S rule is one of the great traditions in Australian sport and should not be unnecessarily dicked around with.

m4c:

- Depends on how many we delist, but 3 players have to be drafted/let go from senior list.

- Probably more unlucky this year after injuring his shoulder and ankle pretty badly, said he's right to start preseason training though :)

FFS what's all this crap about him not being any good just because we're using our last pick? Hello people, take a look at how many ROOKIES we have playing in our best 22; Jamison, Garlett, Carrazzo, Joseph, Laidler, Thornton, Ellard, Curnow (has shown at his best he is up to it), Betts was a PSD pick, Duigan was a late pick also. You people need to settle down and give the kid a chance to prove himself.

Also, to those in the know, could you please outline what sort of player he is, I know he isn't a KPP but what are his strengths and weaknesses? Who will he be challenging for his position. Thanks.

Re: Dylan Buckley officially a Blue !!

i spoke to Emma about him last year, and her exact words where "he is going to be a star" she really rates him highly...

Re: Dylan Buckley officially a Blue !!

Great to get him for nix. Will be a star from what I've heard and there's going to be a lot of jealousy from other teams with our huge scoop.

Great work CFC.

Welcome to the club Dylan :thumbsu:
Can't believe people are complaining about him being over hyped and maybe no good. He looks like he could be a gun, so what if he turns out to be a dud (which I doubt) we got him for pick 98 for gods sake. Most picks that high normally get passed up anyway.

True. I just made a big post in the player thread explaining my opinion but it's great news IMO.

Come on down...
