I've said it before, if he tells the club he wants out, the only real question is whether they can get a return that is better or equivalent to what they would get via FA compensation next year.
That being said, Hawthorns pick 14 isn't that far from the mark. GWS will have to be thinking that they will be a top 6 side or better next season. Any compensation pick they are likely to receive is unlikely to be much better than that. So pick 14 plus something would need to put Hawthorn at least in the ballpark of being acceptable. Lock in known assets now, versus unknown assets next year.
The 'other clubs can give us a better offer' argument just doesn't hold water in the AFL context. GWS can't send a player to a club he doesn't agree to go to. Unless he was to say 'get me to Victoria and I don't care which club', which I just can't see happening. If you had an opportunity to choose your employer, and the rules allow you to do this, why wouldn't you? Why would you allow someone else to determine your future? It's just unrealistic.

It's an interesting one. It seems like Hawthorn, Essendon and Carlton are the contenders. Conventional wisdom would suggest Hawthorn and Essendon have the best shot.

Hawthorn could get tied up sorting out appropriate compensation for GWS and Carlton is going to have its hands full with McGovern.

I feel like Essendon can most easily satisfy GWS.
Does that matter though, if Shiel picks Hawks, they will try to get a deal done, if that falls through then he stays at Giants.

This is getting interesting.. seen posts from 'itk's from both carlton and hawks who say they are getting shiel

someones gona be wrong ;o
The only good sources in these situations is those close to the player. Everyone at GWS knew they were getting buddy, many at Sydney knew he was going to GWS and had no clue their club was even interested. But people close to Buddy knew.

Stuart Dew was an assistant at Sydney and heard via Jarryd Roughead about Buddy and had to ask horse if it was true, Longmire tried to deflect and laugh it off until Dew told him his source. Others at Sydney bar 3-4 found out the same day the public did.

How do they get it done? Assuming pick 14 isn't enough.

Can they trade a 2019 1st rounder?
Rumour I heard is it will be 14 + Ceglar (with Hawthorn covering some of his pay) for Shiel. Being Hawthorn there will likely be a shuffle of second rounders so that everyone is happy.

No. No we didnt "know" we were getting buddy
Lots of talk but no absolutes.

Hell there was arguments on our board leading up to the trade about wether he is coming and wether we wanted him.

Many reasons.

But for starters I watched his last game.

I'd be honest, he shouldn't have been playing especially as McEvoy was playing. Weather was horrible aswell especially going in with two ruckman, but he's been a good target. His tap work is decent, better than McEvoy's. Was terrific prior to his knee reco.

If we are only going off tap work we already have Dawson.

I cant see him being part of any trade for Shiel

Seems strange you'd offer him close to 1millpa then, doesn't it?
Not sure what any decisions made by the HFC have to do with my opinion on Dylan Shiels.

Are you one of those supporters that believe you're more than just a customer of the AFL club you support? Assuming you're a member.

Not sure why you'd knock Cegs back to be honest. Your list doesn't exactly have a decent ruckman, or actually have rucks.

North trying to keep Preuss.
Lobb
Simpson as backup
Flynn developing
Pretty sure they have an awesome kid coming through the academy this year (Could be mistaken)

There are rucks to be had without giving up Shiel for Ceglar and a late 1st rd pick.

Shiel doesn't strike me as the player to tell GWS to send him to one club and one club only.
Could very well see a case whereby he says send me to Hawks or Essendon, or i'll stay.
