There are a lot of factors involved in a decision. I seriously doubt that what club your family supports is at the top of the list however.
Im not implying its at the top of the list, just that it is a factor. Any other club it wouldnt be as much, but its Essendon- they are on top of the hatred list by a country mile. With the shit they have got upto over the last few years & the way we have reveled in it, the hatred runs deep- both ways

If the bombers have a good package, he may take it. I suspect Carlton have put a very good package to him, he may take that. He may take the Hawks if a decent one is on offer as well. I dont think the past is relevant, look at our clubs past, not so pretty in some regards..

What? So Essendon hate Shiel's family too?
thats what you take from that? ok then...
both ways - we hate you, you hate us
for clarity, I'm tipping Sheils family wouldnt piss on your club if it was on fire (they may if i wasnt on fire and they were given the opportunity) & clubs dont take personal dislikes to the general public.

Have it from a reliable source (his boxing instructor) that Shiel hates his mum, and while having made an informal commitment to Hawks a while back, after a family argument, will be announcing Essendon as his preferred destination on the condition they live stream his mother's reaction when she hears the news.

Obviously I was being facetious. And yes, no shit, we have a rivalry. But you are placing waaaaaaay too much importance on it. Shiel's family's thoughts on a team is like 0.000000001% of a factor.

I’d much rather the Hawks get Wingard than Shiel.

I'd prefer Shiel. Hawthorn's biggest holes IMO are 1. KPF, 2. shallow midfield and 3. KPD. Shiel is a quality inside midfielder that would really help Tom and JOM. Whilst Wingard can also play midfield, I believe it is not to the level of Shiel as Shiel is an out and out coalface mid whilst I think Wingard is better suited to a half forward flank. Since Wingard has moved into the middle more, his possession numbers have not really gone up at all but he has gone from kicking 50 goals in a year (and AA) to kicking 20 odd goals.

Anyway, that's my reasoning. Why do you prefer Wingard?

Wingard is a genuine match-winner and given his ability to play as an inside/outside midfielder and as a forward, he fits the Clarkson mould perfectly.

Shiel is primarily an inside midfielder who’s good in his own right but he doesn’t even come close when ranked amongst the best midfielders.

Fair enough - I agree he is a Clarkson type player (as Clarko loves flexibility) and can be a match winner on his day.

Also, just on the Shiel "doesn't come close" to the best mids part - I'm not sure that's quite right. First of all, he plays in a stacked midfield and you could easily have said the same of Tom Mitchell in a similar scenario before coming to Hawthorn. Secondly, last season (at 24) Shiel was All Australian (which as a pure mid is top echelon of players). That is earlier AA selection that many great mids including Sam Mitchell, same as Tom MItchell and before the guys at GWS like Ward, Coniglio, etc. Only Dangerfield had more clearances that year. This year Shiel is the No 1 mid for goal assists and averaged 26 touches (with good contested/uncontested balance) a he has for the last 4 seasons.

I agree he is not a top 10 mid (or even top 20) and I don't think he will do a Tom Mitchell (become significantly better away from such a crowded midfield) but I do think he would be valuable to us as inside/outside support for Tom Mitchell - particularly to step up when he is tagged or even attract a tag himself (releasing Tom) from time to time. Also feel he would be more consistent than Wingard.

Given Sheil has a Carlton loving family, i think that Essendon is pretty unlikely, especially given Carlton is keen to grab him.
Yes, he's a professional & all that, but if the situation was reversed I wouldnt be too confident. We deadset hate each other, could you imagine your Bomber loving family having to get behind the Blues because your son plays there- you would disinherit your child and just replace him by becoming the host family for the bombers new top draft pick :)

Brendan Goddard same thing. Didn’t go to Carlton after the saints

Steele Sidebottom ans Beams both essendon fans have stayed with their club.

Cyril Rioli before he was drafted said he If he could go to any club it would be essendon. Didn’t try and leave the hawks to come to essendon.

Jack Billings family still buy essendon memberships and he hasn’t tried to come to us.

Once you’re immersed in football culture you often forget your passions as a kid. You make the choice that suits your needs whether it financial or on field success or both.

It’s the same as all players.

Consideration #1 is cash and length of deal.

When / if multiple clubs come in with similar offers he’ll consider things like role, the coach, the team and it’s prospects, facilities etc.

But none of that overrides the cash thing because the way the AFL works, any of the 18 clubs can come up with a story as to why they’ll be winning a flag in the next 5 years.

Clubs you supported as a kid means **** all.

Yeah but apparently it goes both ways.

Good enough mid to be named AA in 2017. Unlucky not to be an AA mid in 2016 as well.

STK offering $1.3m a year is at that level. Where is Norths counteroffer???

Reckon says a great deal that despite us offering lots of cash to any good midfielders going, we aren't interested in Shiel.
