hi guys,
i've come up with this team as your best of this century so far. this is not taking into account anything any player done prior to the year 2000, even if they played in both eras i was only considering their performances post 2000-. thoughts?

FB: D.SOLOMON D.FLETCHER* D.HARDWICK
HB: M.MCVEIGH S.WELLMAN A.MCPHEE
C: M.JOHNSON J.WATSON* (vc) B.STANTON*
HF: M.MERCURI S. LUCAS D.ZAHARAKIS*
FF: B.CARACELLA M.LLOYD A.MONFRIES
RR: D.HILLE* J.HIRD (c) J.JOHNSON
INT: J.MISITI P.RYDER* A.RAMANAUSKAS D.PEVERILL
COACH: KEVIN SHEEDY

This is a serious question.

why?

Seems like its pretty close though.
Its all about the *....

And kreuze control, if youre gonna be a proper troll, then you have to *Monfries too. Shows your ignorance to both the situation at hand, and football in general.

Yeah, that's how I read it too. Otherwise Monfries would be "*"d, as might Hird. Although maybe he's just rubbish as a troll....

Not sure if Hardwick did enough in his two seasons with us post 1999 to be in the side. Dempsey may take that slot. Ditto Ramanaskus. Lovett and Winderlich probably need to be in there somewhere. No way would I play M Johnson on the wing actually - he would go back and take Hardwick's spot.

Heffernen, Blumfield and Moorcroft would need to be considered for their 2000 => 2002 years.

i figured the * meant still playing for us...
Hmmm. Could well be.

Guess I'm just so used to reacting to stuff lately that I may have over-reacted. My apologies kreuze control.

Now, back to the thread.

My team would be
FB: M.Johnson, Fletcher, Solomon
HB: McVeigh, Wellman, Ramanauskas
C: Stanton, Watson, Hird
HF: Mercuri, Lucas, Caracella
FF: Ryder, Lloyd, Monfries
Rucks: Hille, Misiti, J.Johnson

INT: Moorcroft, Heffernan, Bolton, Daniher :D

BOLTON????

Calm the heck down guys, not sure how any of you have managed to misconstrue this as a troll, suppose quite a few of you are pretty paranoid at the moment. A quick look at his posting history shows we're not the only club he's done this for.

As for the side itself, its a decent list, really illustrates how good the early 2000s side was compared to whats come since, for the first time in a while we look to have a group who have a shot at replicating that success.
Also count 5 of that original list who finished their careers at other clubs, bit of a shame.

If you think leaving Long out and putting Mcflee in is not dumb then perhaps you aren't as wise as you'd like to think,
Share your opinion, you come across as a bit simple calling everyone ####### dumb, so try to use words that make you look really ##### wise and educated...It was a simple question as the op never stated what the * was for.
Big glass of water, three deep breaths and a run around the block.

Current Essendon players, as is standard practice with all such teams and lists like this. You guys are being really ******* dumb.
Yeah, I admitted I over reacted and apologised. Guess I got so caught in the whole saga I forgot that not all posters have ulterior motives.

Personally, I'd prefer trolling on the drugs issue to someone seriously saying Bolton should be in our best side since 1999.
I think so. Honestly, we haven't been good in the past 13 years. Bolton has played 8 of those years, so I put him ahead of guys like Hardwick or Long who only played for 2 or so years. That's the big issue I guess if we are going specifically from 2000 on, it is hard to build a 22 of gun players.

wow, ive posted this on most clubs' forums already and not one other forum thought i was being a troll, or questioned what an asterisk symbolises in footy.... Im glad theres at least 1 or 2 posters on here who were able to be helpful and I thank you for that. Just shows where your state of mind is at as a club really.

ps. for those wondering, it's for a book due to be released in 2015 for which I am one of the contributors.

I count 6. Solomon, McPhee, M.Johnson, Hardwick, Caracella, Monfires.

Also, of that side, 3 players were listed at other clubs before coming to Essendon (McPhee, Wellman, Peverill)

Haha, well to be fair, we've had our fair share of trolls over the past 5 months.

Again, sorry for the misconception. Good luck with your book.

HF: M.MERCURI S. LUCAS D.ZAHARAKIS*

RR: D.HILLE* J.HIRD (c) J.JOHNSON
INT: J.MISITI P.RYDER* A.RAMANAUSKAS D.PEVERILL

What exactly is the criteria? Would players be rewarded for consistent performance over a number of seasons post 2000, or would it be just the absolute best form they were in post 2000 even if it was only for one or two years?

Very hard thing to do given that we are only just starting to put together a side that has a right to be considered in the same book as the 2000 side and we have been so shit for so long.

If I had to select a properly balanced side of the best players on the name from the past 13 years it would look like this:

Defence
Fletcher Carlisle Hardwick
Dempsey1 Hurley Wellman2

Midfield
Hille Watson Zaharakis
J Johnson Stanton Winderlich

Attack
Mercuri Lucas Hird
Bewick3 Lloyd Ryder

Interchange
Long3 M Johnson McVeigh Monfries

It would have absolutely no relevance in a historical sense as I can't be bothered weighting careers of respective players because, if we can't have a guess at what some of the current ground will amount to, you might as well just add Ryder, Hille and Winderlich to the 2000 side and be done with it.

1 The need for Solomon wouldn't be as great as the key defensive stocks would be much stronger. Dempsey has been outstanding for the last three years (or at least when he has played in the last three years)

2. Would seriously consider Hibberd for Welman as Welman was really more of a counterattacking tall than a key defender and he is clearly behind Hurley and Carlisle as a stopper. Wellman selected on sheer weight of numbers.

3. Long and Bewick wouldn't survive on from from 2000. Mercuri might be another. Davey would play for Bewick.

I think the rest would be almost unchallanged. 2000 midfield and ruck stocks were weak. By the time the current group are finished there will be lines through Hardwick, Wellman, both Johnsons, Monfries, McVeigh, Hille and probably Lucas.

Apologies. There's a certain few Essendon posters who are jumping at shadows.

All fine, a few rather trigger happy people here with some investigation.

Team looks fairly good on first look.
