Lewis has stated his dream of racing for Ferrari previously. I just thought the opportunity had passed him by and also the fact they trip over their own feet meant Lewis wouldn't worry about it. He's chasing that 8th world title. It's a ballsy move but if he somehow managed to win a record breaking title and returning Ferrari to the top whilst over 40 would be an insane achievement...and his greatest imo. It's definitely not the easy option. Now if he had signed with RB then I'd agree with you for sure.

I can understand the 'glory hopping' kind of accusations if Lewis joined Red Bull, but the fact remains he left McLaren for an unknown quantity in Mercedes, and now is leaving Mercedes for Ferrari which although a dream drive for just about every F1 driver and below on the grid, are a laughing stock and a rich source of memes.

And no matter what you think of the dominance of Mercedes during the first few years of the turbo hybrid era, you still have to win the championships. Hamilton's won 7 of them. Do we cheapen or downplay Schumacher's seven titles because half of them were when Ferrari had no real competition?

Unknown quantity in Mercedes?

He left the WC winning factory MB team to join...the WC winning factory MB team.

Do yourself a favour and start taking an interest in f1.

Nah, you cheapen them because of Bridgestone favouritism, a massive blindspot among fans.

The first 4 championships were fine, but the last 3 were taking the piss.

Is it really ballsy move to join a top 3 wcc team, to join a top 3 wcc team?

It's a move for the sake of doing it.

Ballsier than staying put or going to RB. Ferrari are a running joke. Like I said hes chasing 8. Going to Ferrari will most likely see him stuck on 7.

What about DR? Not sure I'd believe this at this early stage. But I can see DR trying to get into a Merc if it means longer than a year contract

Are you being deliberately obtuse? How many races in the modern era did Mercedes win before Hamilton joined them?

Embarrassing from you mate.

I can't understand the move to get Hamilton as Sainz is without question the best number 2 driver on the grid. Neither Lewis nor Leclerc have ever been a number 2, probably neither will want to embrace the role, so how Ferrari gets that dynamic to work on the track is a mystery.

I wondered whether the move was instigated by Hamilton because Mercedes were lowballing him on dollars or years but the rumoured Toto reaction raises eyebrows.

Sainz or Albon for the Mercedes seat IMO with the other going to Red Bull to replace Perez.

Although, I can completely understand the move to get Hamilton from a revenue sense.

Has all the ingredients to be Hamilton vs Alonso at McLaren. I also think it will end in tears.

At least it definitely gives us something to talk about because at the moment the WDC and WCC are nearly foregone conclusions. I don't expect Merc, Ferrari or anyone else to win a title before 2026 - think both are focused on getting the regulation changes right.

Unfortunately with how development of cars is regulated in F1 it is nowadays very difficult for teams to come out of nowhere to snatch wins, much less titles, from the old guard.

Brawn wins the championship in 2009.
They don't have the funds to carry on but MB buys them
They didn't develop the car for 2010, but it doesn't matter as it's a transition year while MB implements their processes.
They improve in 2011
They improve further in 2012 which includes winning a race.
There's the knowledge of the new engines for 2014 which MB has a head start on.
There's the intent to ween off their relationship with Mclaren, who were effectively the factory MB team, as they now have their own team.
They built engines for McLaren from 1995 to 2012, where they won titles and were almost always in the top 3.

F1 fans says Lewis Hamilton left McLaren at the end of the 2012 season for an "unknown quantity".

I'm not offended by being called "obtuse" like Bob Gunton's character in The Shawshank Redemption because that term doesn't apply to me.

I don't think it's improbable that Ferrari and Mercedes can mount a serious challenge tilt in 2024, let alone make it much closer than previous years. Red Bull's advantage was so pronounced in pre-season testing that both teams knew exactly where they were deficient before the first race even took place, so they would have been spending the entire season rebuilding their car around that concept. The other teams like AM and McLaren who copied the Red Bull concept from 2022 made immediate improvement so naturally, both Ferrari and Mercedes will also be closer once they follow suit

The question for Red Bull is, what do they work on to stay ahead? They don't have the advantage of their cars deficiencies being obvious against the rest of the field. The aero package on the car is where the primacy lies, but for example Ferrari and Mercedes both had an edge in lower speed corners all year. Do those teams keep the advantages in those area when they upgrade or are they incompatible with the RB aero concept? Given the dominance RB has on such a variety of corners and tracks, are there other things Ferrari and Mercedes are doing with the car better that weren't noticed in 2023?

More than dominant seasons that weren't followed by a rule change ended up producing close seasons the year after, 2011 into 2012 for RB, 2016 into 2017 and 2020 into 2021 for Mercedes.

Is the question more “what have Red Bull held back that would improve the car “ back in 2023?
The car was so superior on 99% of tracks that they didn’t need to do much upgrading. But the beast never sleeps and the factory would have been churning out variations to the car to improve it.
They didn’t need to implement them of course. But they still exist.

If Hamilton thought Mercedes strategies were bad at times, just wait til he hears Ferraris.. 😂
There is a part of me that wants to see this fail spectacularly for the memes

"My tyres are gone"

"So has your engine, Lewis"

“Yes Lewis we already know, we can’t find them, we are checking.”
