Always wondered what the "natural scope of improvement is" for an F1 Driver.

In AFL you typically hear about the "third year breakout" being a thing once a player has a couple of pre-seasons under their belt.

I guess in F1 it's hard to judge how long it takes a driver to find their peak performance because its very car dependent. And is the adjustment/growth purely down to experience, or is it possible for a driver to develop their reaction skills over time.
I gather tyre management is probably the one aspect where experience counts for a lot

Also very difficult because improving your would be 5kilometer lap distance qualification by 0.2 seconds in the lap would be career changing. Its insane how important that differential over that distance is so important.

I think from year to year there will also be tweaks, due to the car and subtle changes. I think the first 2-3yrs at F1 level it is more about learning what driving style works for the driver, keeping it clean and just building the confidence at each of the tracks. I'd say by year 3 onwards, the driver has a clear routine, is physically developed to withstand the rigours of a Grand Prix weekend, and also has the confidence to start attacking on the track.

Using Oscar as an example, his first year built slowly, largely because McLaren was a shitbox for the first half of the season, before finding a lot of performance late. His qualifying performances were steady, but his ability to make the tyres last was the big issue. This year he has shown a lot of improvement with that, and so next year I would be thinking his main priority would just be getting that consistency from week to week across the board. His quali and race pace is pretty good when he is on, but the bad weekend every month is what will hold him back from fighting for championships, if he can tidy that up and McLaren is a top car again next year, I wouldn't be surprised to see him be up to his neck in the WDC battle.

If Oscar doesn't DNF this weekend he joins this club:

TBH if all new circuits are made in the model of Austin then I'd be happy. You can take multiple lines through a bunch of corners which allows for more exciting racing. Ok DRS helps a little but you do get to see wheel to wheel racing. Would love to see the maggots/becketts type esses opened up and made wider but I guess if you do that you get people straightlining them.

I like the idea of rotating circuits but you just know the ones on rotation will be the ones already paying the lowest fees like Spa and Imola, the fixed term slots will go to the generic shitty street circuits that pay a fortune to be on the calendar.

I'd like to see Istanbul Park and Sepang again every few years. I dismissed Buddh and Yeongam as being boring circuits when they were first on the calendar but they unfortunately debuted during a very boring era so might have been too quick to judge.

The shit fight between Russell and Ver could make thing interesting for this race and the future if it continues.
Just needs Max to stir it up more with something on the track now.

Russell saying Max can’t handle adversity or when things aren’t going his own way might be one of the most tone deaf comments I’ve heard in a while
This is the same guy that whinged, bitched and complained on a regular basis during his time at Williams as if it were his God given right to be in a top car.

He's a good driver is George, maybe a little bit better than that on his day, but nothing more.

Will be very interesting to see how he handles things if Antonelli gets his shit together quickly.

Also the same guy that took out Bottas and went and decided to pay him on the head.

I'll back Hamilton for his 7th next season, provided the Ferrari is competitive.

I think this year has been much more Mercedes than Lewis in terms of it's issues.
Except that Lewis has consistently finished behind his own teammate - the fairly ordinary Russell.

They haven't been running the same packages for large parts of the season though?

I don't recall exactly how many races it's been but I know it's happened at several tracks this year.

For all the Russell is better rhetoric, he still only won the same number of races as Lewis did.

I wouldn’t say I am backing him in for it, been a while since we have seen him at peak form and jumping in to a new car and performing can be tough.

I will say I think some are being too quick to just write it off, clearly Lewis and the current Mercedes don’t get along. I am not sure that means the days of him being a title threat are done though in the right car.

Charles is a level or 2 above Russell though.

Particularly in qualifying, Charles will destroy Lewis and we all know in modern F1 its virtually impossible to win without qualifying in front of your teammate.

Unless of course there is weather around.

Lewis would be 5th on the line of betting at best IMO. Cant see him beating his own teammate let alone Max and the 2 Mclarens.

Again, this isnt peak Hamilton anymore.

No, it certainly isn't peak Hamilton.

Think some might be surprised what a change of scenery could do for him though. He clearly needs a freshen up. Had he stayed with Mercedes, I'd have been the first one suggesting he'd be better off retiring.
